Chapter 126: 713,850 EXP
The Commander stepped aside and introduced Max to the Governor.
"This is the newly appointed Imperial Demon Vanguard. Are you not surprised?"
The Governor shook his head. "Not surprised? I was flabbergasted."
The Governor composed himself and greeted Max by shaking his hand.
"I’m Governor Elian Valtoris, Provincial Governor of Mirefall Province.
Nice to meet you might be an understatement.
It’s a pleasure to meet you, newly appointed Imperial Demon Vanguard."
"Likewise." Max beamed a smile.
Max was not gullible. For the Governor, he was nothing but a chess piece.
Max understood how those who followed the Supreme Strategist’s class sequence treated others.
It was inevitable. By nature, they shouldn’t feel deep attachments to certain individuals as it would affect their decision making in the battle.
They must be objective—setting side emotions... and perhaps, for the better, destroy their self for the sake of conquering.
The Governor’s amiable behavior was definitely an act that they themselves weren’t aware.
Every tactician’s class possessed this flaw.
After their brief greeting, the Commander pulled out the letter from his pocket and handed it to the Governor.
The Governor read the letter and nodded.
"I understand. I’ve already prepared the gold for him.
His performance bonus wasn’t mentioned, but I guess the Imperial Demon Vanguard’s position is already regarded as it is."
The Governor gave a meaningful smile to Max, and the latter responded with a smile.
The Governor took out a jade box with exquisite design of the empire.
The Governor handed it to Max and said, "There are a total of 220 Gold Coins inside. This jade box is a bonus for me. That’s worth at least 10 Gold Coins. Thank you for protecting the Mirefall Province.
We can’t anticipate the demon’s activity, but because of your presence, their invasion didn’t escalate.
On behalf of the entire Mirefall Province..."
The Governor bowed deeply.
"Thank you!’
Max nodded. "The pleasure is mine."
Max actually didn’t know if he was the one who scared off the Greater Demon and his legion, or perhaps they simply returned after they ambushed Archmage Arlen and Blade Saint Branna.
Nevertheless, he wouldn’t deny the rewards granted to him.
The Governor straightened his back, a bit embarrassed that Max left him hanging by not reciprocating his gesture.
He didn’t know that Max was occupied now by the system’s notification.
[After receiving plentiful rewards—three titles and Imperial Demon Vanguard’s Compensation—the system determined that you have amassed 713,850 EXP.
You have level up...
You have level up...
You have level up...]
The same sentence continued to ring on Max’s mind, bringing him into a state of euphoria.
Eventually, the system notifications settled in.
[You are now Level 130. You have gained 28 Free Stat Points.
Please allocate them wisely.]
Max didn’t plan on allocating the Free Stat Points at the moment yet.
He had to train with his Radiant Knights first to assess his current strength.
Max was elated. Not only he gained a total of 230 Gold Coins, including the jade box, he also leveled up to Level 30, which might take at least a month of constant hunting demons and monsters to attain.
He was in a very good mood that he entertained whatever the Governor’s inquiries.
The Governor, on the other hand, was astonished after hearing Max’s narration of his encounters with the Greater Demon and his legion.
With his quick wit, he himself wasn’t confident he could escape alive from their ambush if he was in Max’s position.
But after knowing Max’s received the inheritance when he died and managed to kill a B-rank Greater Demon in the revival state, he felt jealous.
He didn’t show it, either. As he had nothing but respect for Max—based on his countenance.
Afterwards, the Commander invited the Governor to have a breakfast with them in the Golden Stag, but the Governor refused.
He was a workaholic man and he did not want to lose his position soon.
The Commander gave him a reminder.
He said, "There are four deputy commanders and each of them can take my position at any time. Though they don’t excel like Vice Governor Aimee, they are still a threat.
Am I worried? Yes.
Am I working hard to prevent losing my position? Yes.
Am I stressing myself out? No.
Am I missing necessary things like feasting in the Golden Stag? No.
If I lose my position one day, can I accept it? Yes."
The Commander smiled and patted the Governor’s shoulder.
He said, "We might lose this position, but don’t forget, we had it.
We achieved the peak of our life and at some point, we might lose them.
But our footprints had already been imbedded there.
It’s engraved deep into the soils. It might be buried with time, but it will remain there forever.
Don’t forget that."
The Commander patted his shoulder again with a serene expression on his face.
The Governor was dumbfounded.
He did not expect the Commander to give him an advice.
As though the Commander wasn’t finished, he concluded his words.
"Don’t narrow your perception, look at the bigger picture.
Aimee’s capability is showing despite being younger than you.
When a time comes she finally becomes a governor and you retired, then the next generation has come.
Isn’t it assuring that someone as capable as Aimee took your position?"
The Governor fell into deep thought.
Lately, when Aimee began to shine because of her potential, he felt threatened.
It occurred a week ago when he learned that most of the public officials in his government favored Aimee more than him.
He though he was about to be demoted, but then he realized he had never asked those public officials who favored Aimee.
They were once who gazed at him with admiring eyes.
He has been in his position for more than a decade.
Those public officials might have already looked for his successor, while he was enjoying his position.
Which was not inherently a bad thing.
After he was enlightened by the Commander’s words, his nerves calmed down.
He set his mind at peace.
The Commander patted the Governor and finally left.
The Governor fell into deep thought while he was alone, and his eyes shone sharp with decisive declaration in his mind...
