Chapter 116: Apostle’s Privilege
While they were leave the military headquarters with Max’s horses, Max asked, "You still haven’t told me the privileges of being an Apostle yet."
The Commander nodded. "Yeah, the privileges are included in the letter. Usually, the Empire wouldn’t issue a back to back message. I think they might have run out of papers."
Max chuckled. "Or perhaps, you just have not read a letter with a message that surpass the space of the paper."
The Commander’s eyes widened. "Right."
Max shook his head. "Alright. Please do tell me the privileges of being an apostle."
He was clearly interested.
The Commander said, "The title of Apostle grants access to Church resources and support throughout the Empire.
All recognized churches, monasteries, abbeys, and cathedrals shall provide temporary refuge to you and your members whenever reasonably possible.
You are entitled to receive, without standard fees—basic healing, purification rites, removal of common curses, spiritual counseling, and emergency medical treatment.
However, advanced miracles and large-scale sacred rituals remain subject to approval by senior clergy.
You may request supervised access to Church records relating to demonic taxonomy, historical demon incursions, forbidden rituals, sacred relics, and corruption case files.
In fact, it’s highly encouraged that whenever you visit a settlement, you must go to the church and read the records there to provide information related to demonic activities in the past that might still be active secretly in the present.
The church here is very active, so I suggest visiting there for the following days."
Max noted in his mind.
"You may also authorize the acquisition or requisition of blessed weapons, consecrated armor, holy relics, sanctified consumables, and anti-demon equipment.
Availability depends upon inventory and operational necessity.
Clergy are expected to assist you in investigations involving demonic activity through local intelligence, witness coordination, ritual support, purification ceremonies, and emergency sanctuary.
That’s all."
Max nodded. With this, I’ll be able to investigate a lot of demons and uncover mysteries that hasn’t been unearthed from my past life, so I won’t have a hard time fighting against them in the future.
He recalled Enzo and smiled. I definitely should invite him to my team.
Max’s only worries were that Enzo would refuse to start in the same region as him.
It was difficult to travel to different region even with the teleportation—the fees alone were extravagant.
When they arrived at the Hearthmarket District, Max finally snapped awake.
The Hearthmarket District was bustling with activities and people.
In the evening, even when some of the merchants had long concluded their business in the neighboring market after the sunset, many individuals, such as soldiers, scholars, adventurers, and travelers gather here to dine, conduct informal meetings, and rest.
The district was characterized by wide pedestrian streets illuminated by enchanted lanterns, open-air courtyards, fountains, and rows of restaurants whose aromas of roasted meats, fresh bread, herbs, and river fish fill the evening air.
When the saliva dripping smell of foods entered Max’s nostrils, his stomach grumbled, causing the Commander to laugh.
He said, "We’ll be dining in the city’s most prestigious restaurant. Dinners on me. Don’t worry."
The Commander changed the horse’s direction and finally arrived at the restaurant that occupied a prominent corner overlooking the Hearth Square, where several broad avenues converge within the Hearthmarket District.
The Commander and Max conspicuously faced the Golden Stag, letting the latter to have a clear view of the restaurant that Commander proclaimed to be the most prestigious restaurant.
The building rose three stories above street level. It was constructed from polished white limestone with dark slate roofing.
Now that it was evening, the tall arched windows framed in dark oak reveal the warm glow of chandeliers inside.
Max glanced at the carved wooden sign, depicting a gilded stag standing atop a hill, hung above the main entrance illuminated by enchanted lanterns that cast a steady golden light throughout the evening.
The entrance was approached by a shallow flight of granite steps leading to double oak doors reinforced with polished brass fittings.
There were many uniformed attendants that greets arriving guests like them.
The restaurant was definitely popular.
The Commander glanced at the two uniformed attendants descending from the stairs and said, "This is the Golden Stag, widely regarded as the premier dining establishment within the Dunmarrow Region.
They are renowned for their refined cuisine, impeccable service, and discreet atmosphere. They serve as a favored venue for senior military officers and other important figures in and out of the city.
Reservations are typically secured several weeks in advance, particularly during official events or periods of increased travel, but since I’m the Commander of the city, I naturally don’t need to do so.
But since this is not work-related, we can only take a normal table at the main dining hall."
Max doubted they could not take a private dining room, but he didn’t mind anyway. They came here to eat, not to discuss a topic that required to be kept confidential.
The two uniformed attendants finally arrived, and they bowed simultaneously.
The Commander jumped from the horse and Max followed.
The Commander said to them, "We’ll only take a normal table in the main dining hall.
As for these horses, please lead them to the stables."
The two uniformed attendants bowed deeply and walked towards the horses.
Max glared at the two horses to behave, and they appeared tamed when the two uniformed attendants grabbed their reign.
But Max knew what they were thinking.
They were only suppressing their excitements in staying in the stables.
He shook his head and didn’t worry. He followed the Commander proceeding at the entrance hall.
They entered in a spacious reception hall finished with polished marble flooring and walnut-paneled walls.
The Commander led Max to the receptionist at the opposite of the entrance. Behind her, a decorative relief depicted scenes of Imperial harvests, forests, rivers, and mountains, symbolizing the diverse provinces that supply the restaurant’s kitchen.
The scent of roasted herbs, freshly baked bread, and hardwood smoke subtly permeated the air.
A soft instrumental music performed by a small ensemble carried throughout the hall without overwhelming conversation.
It was the first time Max had visited a prestigious restaurant, striking him in awe.
The Commander noticed his reaction and simply smiled...
