Chapter 75: Chapter 75: Barrier
The goal was to prevent the apocalypse from ending... It was a sensational claim, and not many people believed it, but Frost Shaw did.
But he had no time to dwell on it. The zombie horde was closing in. Lily Hart, full of confidence, said, "Don’t worry. They can’t get in."
Just as Lily Hart had said, the zombies all gathered about ten meters away. They clawed at the air, baring their fangs.
But they couldn’t cross that line, no matter what they did. It was as if an invisible wall was holding them back.
Seeing this, everyone relaxed. As long as the zombies couldn’t get in, there was nothing to worry about.
Everyone tried to get back to their own business, but there was none to be had. Their only guest was Leo Colby.
Nutwood Base, Core District.
Inside the Base Commander’s office, a slight man sat on a large, soft sofa, a scantily clad woman nestled in his arms.
Her slender fingers gently drew circles on Jason Lynch’s chest, her expression seductive.
"KNOCK KNOCK—" A knock sounded at the door.
Someone entered to report, their eyes fixed on the floor to avoid looking around. "Base Commander, the zombies have them surrounded."
"Good. Keep an eye on them and report back the instant anything changes!" Jason Lynch scoffed, tilting the woman’s chin up with a finger to look her over.
"Yes." The person withdrew.
In the vast office, only Jason Lynch and the woman remained. They flirted, and the temperature in the room began to rise.
Just as the last piece of fabric on the woman was about to fall, the door was knocked on again.
Jason Lynch frowned, glaring at the person with extreme impatience. "Speak."
The man’s body trembled as he withstood Jason Lynch’s oppressive energy, trying his best to speak clearly. "The... The Guardian Corps saw through their binoculars... the zombies are surrounding the RV from a few meters out, but they can’t get in..."
With that, he dropped to his knees with a THUD, not daring to look directly at Jason Lynch.
Jason Lynch shot to his feet, his face livid. He was completely naked, but the woman, quick to notice, handed him his clothes.
She also grabbed her own clothes and began to dress, saying softly, "You should go, Base Commander. I’ll be waiting for you."
Jason Lynch’s expression softened slightly. He let the woman finish dressing him before saying, "Get up. Take me to see for myself."
The man, looking as if a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders, walked ahead with his head bowed while continuing his report.
"Base Commander, it’s true. I saw it myself. There seems to be some kind of barrier around the RV. The zombies can’t get through."
Jason Lynch snorted. "Something that strange? Are you sure there isn’t just something wrong with the zombies?"
The man didn’t dare utter a word, simply walking ahead in silence. When they both stood atop the perimeter wall,
they looked toward the RV and were simultaneously stunned. The area was a dense, seething mass of zombies.
A quick glance suggested there were at least a thousand of them. In the middle of the horde was a circular patch of ground that had been intentionally left empty.
The zombies surged forward relentlessly, yet they couldn’t get in. It really was... a barrier.
Jason Lynch believed that everything in the world had a bug. He pondered with a grim expression, and the surrounding members of The Guardian Corps didn’t dare to breathe.
This was all because Jason Lynch was mercurial. When he got angry, his face would darken, and he would kill someone over the slightest disagreement.
Working for him meant being on edge at all times, terrified that one wrong word would be their last.
"Have the zombies form a ladder," Jason Lynch ordered.
"Yes, sir." Someone beside him responded. He formed a strange sign with his hands and began muttering.
Suddenly, the zombies on the perimeter began climbing over the bodies of their companions, moving up and forward.
What had been a single layer of zombies gradually became two, then three layers high as they scrambled over each other, surging toward the RV.
Inside the RV, Lily Hart watched the zombies build a tower of bodies and joked nonchalantly, "These zombies are pretty clever, but what’s the—"
SPLAT— A zombie suddenly dropped inside.
It looked around in a daze, seemingly unsure of what had just happened.
Suddenly, its eyes flashed with a momentary brightness, and it began to shamble toward the RV.
Every wall has a top. Where one crossed, another would follow. By building their tower, they were getting over the invisible wall.
Lily Hart’s words caught in her throat. She stared, dumbfounded, at the few zombies that had crossed the boundary.
She shot to her feet. With a single thought, the zombies instantly disintegrated into ash. She destroyed them as quickly as they appeared.
Within this zone, Lily Hart had absolute authority, but it required her direct focus to exercise it.
Frost Shaw was just about to act when the zombie vanished. He glanced at Lily Hart, saw the faint smile playing on her lips, and understood.
Lily Hart calmly sat back down. Fiddling with her fingers out of sheer boredom, she sighed, "This is no fun..."
No sooner had she spoken than a few more zombies dropped in. Lily Hart simply raised an eyebrow, and they vanished as well.
Jason Lynch was a Fifth-rank Superpower User. By focusing a bit of his power into his eyes, he could see the situation by the RV with perfect clarity.
He flung his arm wide and cursed, "Useless trash! Good-for-nothing idiots!"
But cursing alone wouldn’t solve the problem. As a Base Commander, he couldn’t openly oppose the "Apocalypse Nova."
Not only could he not oppose her, on the surface he had to treat her with respect. This was an explicit order from Central Command.
He knew all the major bases wanted to win Lily Hart over. He had to be the first to do it, and he had to make her his!
Thinking of that scene, a cruel smile touched Jason Lynch’s lips. He commanded, "Keep the zombies coming! Let’s see how long she can last!"
The man beside him agreed in a low voice, reaching up to wipe the sweat from his brow before resuming his muttering.
Inside the RV, Lily Hart operated with ease, destroying each zombie the moment it crossed over.
Ten minutes later, a thin sheen of sweat beaded on the tip of Lily Hart’s nose. Her focus was starting to drift, and her vision blurred.
She still had the presence of mind to complain to the system, "What’s going on? I thought you said I was invincible inside this zone!"
The system replied weakly, [That doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want. Controlling the zone consumes mental energy. You’re not even a superpower user; the fact that you could focus and maintain control for ten minutes is already incredible.]
Lily Hart was left speechless. Since arriving in the apocalypse, this was indeed the first time she’d had to control her zone with such intensity.
She rubbed the bridge of her nose. Diana Sharp stepped forward in concern. "Lily, are you okay?"
"I’m fine, I just need a break. Frost Shaw, you two are up." Lily Hart waved her hand dismissively.
Frost Shaw and Roman Rowe nodded in unison. Their bodies blurred—like a passing gust of wind—and they were already outside the RV.
Leo Colby, who had been standing outside the RV the whole time, simply observed everything without the slightest intention of intervening.
Lily Hart hadn’t been counting on him anyway. He was just a customer, after all. Helping would be a kindness, but not helping was perfectly within his rights.
Roman Rowe’s method of dealing with the zombies wasn’t as clean or efficient as Lily’s. He seemed to favor wide, sweeping attacks, sending thick, black zombie blood splashing everywhere.
Frost Shaw was much cleaner. With a slight twitch of his fingers, the zombies were instantly turned into ice sculptures. With another gesture, the blocks of ice—and the zombies within—exploded.
The scene was rather gory, but no one looked away. Instead, they stared wide-eyed, observing every detail.
On the wall, Jason Lynch’s fists clenched. He let out a long, frustrated breath. With two powerhouses like Frost Shaw and Roman Rowe holding the line,
coupled with the RV’s miraculous defensive ability, there was no way he could break through today.
"Forget it. Retreat," Jason Lynch said, his tone laced with reluctance.
