Chapter 61: Chapter 61: Awaiting Boss Hart

Lily Hart bought another pair of slippers from the mall, put them on, and walked downstairs step by step. The miserable screams were unending.

She sat on the threshold outside the first floor, waiting for the two of them to finish up so they could all go back together.

’After all... it’s the dead of night, and there are too many bad people around.’

Listening to the miserable screams coming from upstairs, Lily Hart busied herself with her Light Brain. A glance showed that it was already one in the morning.

’No wonder I’m so tired...’ Lily Hart propped her chin on one hand, her head bobbing as she started to doze off.

When Frost Shaw came downstairs, he saw her, overcome with sleep. Her head was tilted back, her mouth was slightly parted, and she was sleeping quite soundly.

He deliberately quieted his footsteps as he walked over to her. He snapped his fingers by her ear, and Lily Hart jolted awake.

Her still-hazy eyes looked up blankly at Frost Shaw. He froze for a moment, then feigned nonchalance and said, "Let’s go."

Lily Hart pushed herself up using the railing. A faint scent of blood drifted past her nose, and she was just about to ask something.

Just then, Roman Rowe chimed in eagerly, "Boss Hart, don’t call me for this kind of job next time. It’s too disgusting..."

"Unless you take me along every time you eat! Then I’ll work for you without a second thought! I’d be willing to climb a mountain of blades or plunge into a sea of fire!"

Lily Hart gave him a slight smile. Her lips parted, and she said, "Get lost."

Although Frost Shaw was walking ahead, his ears were pricked, listening to the conversation behind him. He couldn’t help but feel a pang of anxiety when he heard Roman Rowe’s bold declaration.

It was only after he heard Lily Hart’s deadpan "Get lost" that he breathed a sigh of relief and strode away.

Frost Shaw and Roman Rowe escorted Lily Hart back to the RV, waiting until they saw her go inside before leaving.

When they reached a fork in the road, Frost Shaw went left. Roman Rowe was about to go right, but he turned and stared intently at Frost’s back as he walked away.

When Lily Hart returned to the second floor of the RV, Diana Sharp and Tina Jacobs were still awake, their eyes wide as they waited for her.

The moment her silhouette appeared near the driver’s seat, Diana and Tina eagerly scampered over and looked her over from head to toe.

"Lily, are you okay?" Diana Sharp asked anxiously.

"Who do you think I am? Of course I’m fine," Lily Hart retorted, pulling them both into a hug and pinching each of their cheeks.

After placating the two of them, Lily Hart went into the bathroom and splashed several handfuls of water on her face, which finally woke her up completely.

Looking at her slightly haggard reflection in the mirror, she couldn’t help but curse herself internally. ’So what if I took care of a few dozen bad guys? What’s there to dwell on!’

’They were irredeemably evil! Besides, this is the apocalypse! There’s no law, no humanity!’

Lily Hart successfully hypnotized herself into putting everything out of her mind. She took a comfortable shower and climbed into bed to sleep.

The sun rose as usual, heralding a new day. Today was the day she had arranged with Base Commander Zelda Whittaker to set up shop at Bloomfall Base.

Lily Hart figured that Bloomfall Base didn’t have many people and that their spending power wasn’t very high, so she didn’t buy any new scratch-off tickets.

’I haven’t even sold out of the ones I bought yesterday.’

The two little ones were already up. After washing up, Lily Hart went down to the first floor.

Diana Sharp and Tina Jacobs were in the middle of cleaning, energetically sweeping and mopping with brooms and mops that were taller than they were.

Even though the first floor wasn’t dirty, she was quite gratified. ’My employee training is really paying off!’

Just as she was about to praise the two girls, Frost Shaw arrived with three young men in tow, all of them looking energetic and full of spirit.

So she decided to praise them all at once and invited everyone to have breakfast together. Perhaps because of last night’s events, she didn’t have much of an appetite.

"You guys are eating without me again!" Roman Rowe’s voice, tinged with resentment, grew louder as he approached.

The moment Lily Hart heard him, she immediately hid his portion. When he rushed frantically to the RV, he saw that everyone had a bowl of noodles except for him.

His mouth immediately turned down in a pout, and his resentful gaze shot toward Lily Hart like a laser. "But you said we’d eat..."

Before he could finish, a steaming hot bowl of noodles appeared in front of him. Roman Rowe’s expression instantly went from gloomy to bright, and a smile spread across his face.

He gave her an obedient smile, then took the bowl of noodles, found a spot, and started eating. Lily Hart just shook her head with a helpless smile.

’If you weren’t so handsome, that bowl of noodles wouldn’t have ended up in your hands, but on your face!’

As they were eating breakfast, Zelda Whittaker arrived. She was wearing the same simple and standard Base Commander’s uniform, which looked elegant and dignified on her.

Lily Hart found it odd. She had seen Hunter Lowell wear the same outfit, but on him, it made him look as old as a man in his sixties or seventies.

’Goes to show, it’s the face that completes the look.’

"Base Commander, have you had breakfast?" Lily Hart asked casually as she stood up to greet her.

Zelda Whittaker subconsciously recalled the black jelly-like substance she had consumed that morning. It was horribly disgusting, but it was very filling.

Her gaze drifted involuntarily to Roman Rowe, who was completely absorbed in slurping his noodles. The broth looked incredibly rich.

It was topped with a fried egg and vibrant green vegetables, and there was even a small helping of lean meat! The aroma was tantalizing!

Zelda Whittaker discreetly pulled her gaze away and said with restraint, "I’ve already eaten."

Then, her gaze fell upon a large pile of shattered glass about ten meters away, and she fell silent for a long moment.

Lily Hart waved her hand nonchalantly, and the shattered glass vanished. Zelda Whittaker continued to wait, assuming a new convenience store would appear.

But... nothing happened.

She looked back at Lily Hart. "Boss Hart, where’s the convenience store?"

Lily Hart, who was sitting on a stool, stole a glance at Zelda Whittaker before letting out a dramatic sigh and slumping her shoulders.

"A group of villains smashed it up last night," she said, clearly dispirited.

Frost Shaw, sitting at a dining table behind her, felt an inexplicable pang in his heart as he watched her shoulders slump.

"Who was it? Zeke Lowell’s crew or Daryl Donovan’s?" Zelda Whittaker took a step forward, planting her hands on the tabletop.

Lily Hart shot upright and said excitedly, "Zeke Lowell!"

Wearing an "I knew it" expression, Zelda Whittaker said reassuringly, "Don’t worry. I’ll send my people to arrest him today."

The residents near the base also fell under the Base Commander’s jurisdiction. She had a certain degree of authority over them, but since they didn’t live inside the base, they weren’t given stipends and weren’t required to perform tasks.

Lily Hart looked a little guilty. "There’s no need to trouble the Base Commander. I... accidentally killed him yesterday. And his lackeys all had a crisis of conscience and, uh, castrated themselves."

Zelda Whittaker was speechless. ’...So, she was just putting on a show for me?’

However, she had long wanted to deal with that crew herself. Unfortunately, she had never found the time, nor did she have members of the Guardian Corps strong enough to confront them.

She started clapping. CLAP, CLAP, CLAP. "Thank you, Boss Hart, for ridding the people of a menace!" she praised with sincerity.

The corners of Lily Hart’s mouth curled up involuntarily, and she lowered her head in a bashful manner. It was only yesterday, after having it explained to her, that she learned residents in the vicinity were also under the base’s jurisdiction.

’After all, killing people and starting fires on someone else’s turf for no reason would be a huge slap in the face to the Base Commander...’

’So... hehe, this beautiful lady is so understanding!’

Zelda Whittaker, on the other hand, felt a bit guilty. ’Boss Hart’s shop was destroyed on my turf. Does this mean she won’t set up shop inside the base now?’

She asked tentatively, "Boss Hart, are you free today?"

Lily Hart nodded eagerly, like a chicken pecking at rice. She glanced at the time on her Light Brain—8:50—and said, "Ten o’clock. I’ll be there at ten sharp. How does that sound?"

How could Zelda Whittaker refuse? She smiled and nodded. "Then I shall await your grand arrival, Boss Hart."
