Chapter 276: Uriel Runs
The clinic doors opened around Hajin’s moving Aegis bed, bringing fifteen living patients beneath Vella’s prepared treatment lines.
Hans transferred the ten Sixth bodies toward Lana’s registry team while Kenny remained beneath his separate Flint cover. Vella released Hajin’s last three healing channels only after clinic seals replaced them, leaving every serious marker stable.
A northern route runner entered before Hajin lowered the final Ring, carrying a snapped Flint household ribbon around one wrist.
"A young woman crossed the high bridle marker alone," he said, offering the ribbon to Hans, "six household riders are closing behind her."
The dark red strip carried no vanguard stitch or field-command number, separating its owner from Dreth’s counted soldiers.
"Did she give a name?" Hajin asked, turning toward the northern door while Aria examined the household weave.
"Uriel Flint," the runner replied, following him outside, "she said you would know why they want her returned."
Hajin took the internal field loop north, leaving the Chain inside inventory while one Ring remained around his right forearm.
The high bridle path entered the valley above an abandoned drainage shelf, avoiding every road anchor Dreth had occupied.
Uriel reached its final marker before Hajin cleared the orchard rise, running with one torn sleeve plus a document case against her chest.
Six mounted retainers followed along the narrow cut, keeping their household ribbons visible while one cast a restraint line toward her legs.
Hajin placed Aegis between them, stopping the line before it reached Uriel while giving every horse room to slow.
She stumbled behind the barrier, then kept her feet until she crossed the Sixth boundary marker under her own power.
The riders halted outside Aegis while their captain presented a sealed retrieval order from his saddle.
"Lady Uriel left household protection without permission," he said, holding the seal toward Hajin, "her father orders her immediate return."
Hajin ignored the page until Uriel recovered enough air to face the men behind her.
"Do you want to return with them?" he asked, keeping the barrier across the bridle cut, "answer before anyone explains your duty."
"No," she replied, gripping the document case tighter, "I left before they could put Lord Dask’s seal on my transfer."
The captain moved his horse toward the barrier, pressing the retrieval order against its clear surface.
"Her consent belongs to the signed household contract," he said, looking past Hajin toward Uriel, "you are obstructing lawful family custody."
"She answered for herself," Hajin replied, pushing the order back with Aegis, "ride away without her."
Two retainers drew binding rods instead, sending red restraint lines around both sides of the barrier toward Uriel.
Hajin split Aegis into six narrow walls, separating every horse before closing flat panels around their riders.
The restraint lines broke against those surfaces while saddles lifted beneath each man, depositing them onto the path without crushing anyone.
Their captain reached for a signal flare, but a smaller barrier closed around his hand before the striker touched its cap.
Hajin compressed each panel until six retainers lay pinned with their arms visible beyond the household weapons they had dropped.

The route runner sounded the custody call while Hajin kept the men separated along the bridle path.
Uriel remained beside the boundary marker, watching him disarm the captain instead of approaching the sealed retrieval order.
"You are not reading it?" she asked, holding the case between both hands, "Father will claim you abducted me without it."
"Lana’s office can copy his claim," Hajin replied, removing the captain’s flare, "you crossed my marker before I touched anyone."
Four custody guards arrived with a quarry wagon plus numbered property bags, following the Witness Office route sheet from Ch.266.
Each retainer stated his name outside the disarm line before two recorded escorts transferred him into the secured wagon.
The captain’s retrieval order entered a numbered envelope, preserving its unbroken seal for Lana rather than settling its meaning here.
All six received property slips plus visible-injury checks before the guards carried them toward the cutting-yard custody gate.
Hajin walked beside Uriel through the northern loop, keeping the runner ahead while she refused the empty wagon seat.
Her shoes had split along both heels, though she continued until the clinic roof appeared beyond the shelter field.
"How long were you traveling?" he asked, slowing enough that she no longer needed to match his stride.
"I left the estate before yesterday’s midnight bell," she replied, rubbing one wrist, "Mother’s former stablemaster hid a horse beyond the grain road."
The horse had carried her through the first relay before going lame, leaving Uriel to follow an old servant bridle map on foot.
"The pursuit found me after sunrise," she said, glancing toward the distant quarry wagon, "they kept asking for the case, not me."
She opened it while walking, revealing a copied household movement order beneath Rovan Dask’s unsigned transfer seal.
The page assigned Flint’s main army to march behind Dreth, with a separate deputy taking authority over his Zone-bound survivors.
"They left several hours after I did," Uriel said, keeping one thumb over the force total, "more than a thousand, and their deputy carries Dreth’s Zone orders."
"Why take the page?" Hajin asked, studying the copied seal without removing it from her case.
"Because Father can call me confused," she replied, closing the cover, "he cannot call his own movement clerk confused without losing the army count."
The answer sounded prepared, although her hands continued shaking around the case after its latch closed.
Clinic workers met them near the intake bench, bringing water plus a treatment slip while Hajin recorded her arrival time.
Uriel stopped after seeing Ressa, Dalen, and the other covered bodies inside Lana’s separated registry lane.
Kenny’s Flint cover rested apart from them, carrying his name plus the order he had refused before Dreth killed him.
"He really refused?" she asked, reading the attached line while the water remained untouched in her hand.
"I heard him do it," Hajin replied, standing beside the cover, "he cut one anchor and warned the wounded before Dreth reached him."
Uriel placed the document case on the intake table, then sat when her legs stopped supporting her beside the bench.
"What do you want from me now?" she asked, looking toward the clinic entrance instead of Hajin, "a statement, the case, or House names?"
"Vella checks your wrist, then you eat and sleep," he replied, moving the case within her reach, "Lana can ask tomorrow what you choose to record."
She kept one hand on the case while Vella examined the restraint bruising left beneath her sleeve.
Outside the clinic, the eastern watch bell began the long approach pattern for an army column beyond the ridge.
