Chapter 811: Chapter 653: To See Is to Possess
Shi Wangyue’s face softened with a pampering smile. "Teacher Zhu Ning is bursting with inspiration, able to write work that exceeds expectations."
...
The "Siwana" Auction Gallery.
"If you like it, then let’s buy it." After standing with Ning Youguang in front of a print for a long time, seeing that she was still studying it intently, Shi Wangyue made the suggestion.
"No." Ning Youguang shook her head. "It’s enough for me to take a good look at it."
"Wouldn’t taking it home let you look at it even better?" Shi Wangyue chuckled.
Ning Youguang turned to glance at Shi Wangyue, then turned back, letting her gaze fall onto the print again. "Buying it and taking it home is for looking at it; looking at it here is also looking. Since all I want is to look at it, then I’ll just look at it properly."
"You don’t have to take it home. See how beautiful it is right here." Joy and admiration surfaced in Ning Youguang’s eyes. "Look, this print is called ’Ever-changing’, but when I look at it, I feel as if I’m soaring across the sky. I think, among the people who come and see it today, there must be some who feel the same as I do. I feel that’s exactly the meaning of it hanging here."
Rather than being taken home by me and hidden away.
"Isn’t bringing something you like home and hiding it even better?" Shi Wangyue, however, had a different view.
"Some people, when they encounter something they like, like to bring it home and hide it. I don’t necessarily." Ning Youguang withdrew her gaze from the print and let it fall on Shi Wangyue’s face. "If that thing is only liked by me alone, I might hide it away without hesitation. But if many people like it, I might prefer to let it stay somewhere it can be loved by more people."
"Why don’t you want to own it?" Shi Wangyue lowered his eyes slightly and asked.
Ning Youguang chuckled softly. "But I already have owned it."
"When did you ever own it?" Shi Wangyue’s gaze fell between Ning Youguang’s painting-like brows.
"To have seen it is to have owned it." Ning Youguang took a light step forward. "It’s already been printed completely in my heart. Whenever I think of it, it is with me."
"This is what you meant when you said that we actually can’t own anything, and the only thing we can truly own is our perception of things?" Shi Wangyue walked after her at an unhurried pace.
"Yes." Ning Youguang said, "You can understand it that way."
Shi Wangyue let out a soundless laugh. "Sorry, I probably can’t be as magnanimous as you."
Toward everything he liked and loved.
He had to carry it home, tuck it away, make it belong to him alone.
Never speak of it, allow no one else to peek at it.
"It’s not magnanimity." Ning Youguang naturally didn’t know the stray thoughts rising in the depths of Shi Wangyue’s heart, but she did understand his personality fairly well. "It’s that we define the word ’own’ differently."
Shi Wangyue pressed his lips into a smile and didn’t continue the discussion.
Because his gaze had been drawn to a print hanging on a wall not far away, titled "The Side of the Sunlight".
"This one looks very warm." Following his line of sight, Ning Youguang saw the orange-red painting on the wall at a glance.
"I’m taking it home." Shi Wangyue’s lips curved in a smile.
Ning Youguang couldn’t help laughing. "As long as you like it."
The "Siwana" Auction Gallery was a newly established private gallery in the capital.
The owner of the gallery was a returned overseas Chinese, himself also an artist. Before coming back, he was quite famous in European and American art circles, while in domestic art circles, he was appreciated and known only by a small number of people.
As it happened, Ning Youguang was one of the art-collecting enthusiasts who was very fond of this artist’s work.
When "Siwana" Auction Gallery was founded, the owner announced to the public that it would be a gallery mainly engaged in the auction of rare books.
He was going to turn it into the country’s largest and most professional "paper works" auction house.
When "Siwana" Auction Gallery finally opened, everyone realized that the works auctioned there were not only books, but also celebrity autographs, atlases, photographs, prints, antique posters, and works by all kinds of famous and unknown artists from around the world.
Ever since Ning Youguang decided to focus on writing her new book, she and Shi Wangyue hadn’t gone out on a date for over a month.
Today happened to be the first day of winter break at USTC, and the weather outside was lovely. Ning Youguang felt that if she still didn’t go out with Shi Wangyue for a stroll and a good relaxation, she’d be letting down not only this wonderful holiday, but also a certain someone who’d been forced to work overtime every night because she needed to concentrate on writing.
Shi Wangyue also knew that today’s date was hard-won, so when Ning Youguang told him they were going out today, he planned the schedule in advance.
So the two of them went out early in the morning.
First, they had an exquisite morning tea at the Summer Palace, then they went hand in hand to the "Siwana" Auction Gallery.
Visiting "Siwana" had been something Ning Youguang had been talking about for months.
Well, since they’d finally managed to get out on a date.
The first thing Shi Wangyue did was put it on today’s agenda.
After they arrived, they found it truly did not disappoint. The owner really deserved to be the most famous collector among artists and the most famous artist among collectors. Even though "Siwana" had just been established, its walls were already covered with a vast number of works.
By the time Ning Youguang and Shi Wangyue finished strolling through the gallery and came out,
in addition to "The Side of the Sunlight", which Shi Wangyue had fallen in love with at first sight, they had also reserved another slightly smaller print and several rare books.
Because they were going to other places for their date afterward, they left their home address with the staff at "Siwana" after paying, and asked them to mail all the paintings and books they had purchased today to their home later.
"This is far more interesting than buying any handbag." As they left the "Siwana" Gallery, Ning Youguang, looking thoroughly satisfied, put the receipt in her bag and then stuffed the bag into Shi Wangyue’s hands.
"If you like it, we’ll come again next time." Of course Shi Wangyue knew Ning Youguang would be very pleased with today’s itinerary.
Because she really loved visiting galleries and museums.
A long time ago, she had once told him, "When we let our bodies wander through this world, don’t be stingy about taking a big chunk of that wandering time to roam museums and galleries. They can make a soul that’s gasping under heavy weight break away at a gallop from this noisy, secular world, follow the souls of those big shots chosen by the gods to reshape our sense of beauty and our awareness—go farther and farther away, to the pure lands in the countryside, to the warm lairs of the flesh, to the merry scenes of the Middle Ages."
"Okay." Ning Youguang indeed smiled happily. "President Shi has arranged things very well today. Where are we going next?"1314
