Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Invisibility
The footsteps outside seemed to stomp right on her heart, making Bai Zhi’s pulse pound along with them. THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.
Bai Zhi’s eyes were glued to the door, not blinking for a second. The extreme tension made her hold her breath involuntarily.
Just as the footsteps reached the door, another voice suddenly called out from outside, "What did that woman say?"
The footsteps stopped abruptly, and a displeased voice rang out, "Weren’t you supposed to be watching her? Why are you running all over the place?"
The person who had just asked the question seemed to laugh sheepishly. "Hey, nature calls, you know? Besides, she’s still out cold and tied up. Even if she woke up, it’s fine. The whole place is sealed shut. She can’t escape."
While the two were talking outside, Bai Zhi quickly asked the System, ’Is there any way for me to escape?’
System: "Apologies, Host. I am the Godly Rich Spending System. I have no way to help you escape."
Bai Zhi asked again in a panic, "Then can you help me notify someone to come save me?"
As if that wasn’t enough, Bai Zhi added in a rapid-fire torrent of words, "Or is there some way to keep them from finding me? At the very least, something to stop them from hurting me for a short time would work! Aren’t you the Spending System? Anything related to spending money should be fine, right? I can buy it from you! Any price will do! As long as it can help me hold on until they find me!"
The moment the words left her mouth, she heard the doorknob turn. CLICK—
Bai Zhi’s ears precisely caught every tiny sound.
Her heart leaped into her throat in an instant. ’It’s over, it’s over!’
’Am I going to die here?!’
’But I was just reborn!’
’I still have so much money in my account that I haven’t spent!’
’If I’d known this would happen, I’d rather have never transmigrated into this book!’
’Giving me hope only to plunge me into despair... what kind of dead end is this?!’
Overcome with tension, Bai Zhi’s body went rigid and her hands turned ice-cold. She even closed her eyes, preparing to die a second time.
Just when Bai Zhi thought all hope was lost and had given up on asking the System, it suddenly spoke: "There is an Invisibility Device available to lend to the Host. Ten million per use."
Bai Zhi’s eyes flew open. "Lend it! I’ll take it! Forget ten million, I’d borrow it even if it cost a hundred million per use!"
She had just finished speaking when she saw the door open. At that exact moment, she felt something envelop her.
The next second, she heard the first Beastman to enter the room shout angrily after scanning the area, "Where is she?! You said she absolutely couldn’t escape! You tell me, where is she?!"
Hearing that the person was gone, the Beastman behind him immediately pushed his way to the front. Sure enough, he couldn’t see any sign of Bai Zhi in the room. He frantically searched the entire room but found no one, his expression turning ugly. "I just put her right there! What the hell? That damn bitch... she must still be hiding somewhere on the Starship! The Starship is in flight, there’s no way she could have gotten off!"
The first Beastman kicked the other one in the leg, roaring with uncontrollable rage, "What are you waiting for? Go find her! You’re more trouble than you’re worth!"
After saying that, he added, "Search carefully. If this woman gets away, we lose our final payment! The client specifically said they have to see her with their own eyes before they pay up."
The Beastman who had been guarding Bai Zhi nodded repeatedly. "I know, I know! I definitely won’t let her get away!"
A frantic search ensued.
Once Bai Zhi was sure they couldn’t see her, she finally let out a breath of relief. As her tense nerves relaxed, her whole body went limp.
She then realized her back was drenched in a cold sweat from the tension.
That was so close. Just one second. It was off by just one second.
If the System hadn’t equipped her with the Invisibility Device in the nick of time, she would have already been "taken care of" by these unknown Beastmen.
After her breathing steadied, Bai Zhi managed to calm down.
She hadn’t been here for very long and hadn’t offended many people—only two or three.
’Sure, there were some verbal disputes, but nothing that would escalate to wanting me dead!’
’Yang Shanshan might have the motive, but she doesn’t have the guts. Besides, hiring a few Beastmen to kill me wouldn’t be cheap. Therefore, both Yang Shanshan and Yu Jia—who just hemmed and hawed for half a day over buying a housing unit the other day—are unlikely.’
’That only leaves Yun Xi.’
’But our conflicts shouldn’t be enough to warrant killing me, right?’
’Could there be something else I don’t know about?’
Just then, the voice of the Beastman from before drifted in from outside, cursing, "Fuck! Where the hell did that damn bitch hide? She was right there before I went to the bathroom! It’s only been a few minutes. She couldn’t have just vanished into thin air on this Starship, could she?!"
Another Beastman said, "Then you tell me where she is now! I told you not to leave her side for a second, and you ended up losing her!"
The Beastman who had been guarding Bai Zhi said defensively, "How was I supposed to know she would disappear?! In such a short time! On a Starship, no less! Would you have expected that?"
He was genuinely bewildered and furious. He had just gone to the bathroom, and the person had vanished into thin air.
’Who would have ever seen that coming?!’
Before going to the bathroom, he had clearly confirmed that Bai Zhi wasn’t awake and that the ropes were still tied securely!
How could she have disappeared in just a few minutes?!
At that moment, a third Beastman made a wild guess, "Is it possible she’s still on this Starship? Just... invisible?"
Bai Zhi’s heart skipped a beat. She hadn’t expected one of the Beastmen to guess the truth.
But the Beastman who had been guarding her immediately shot back, "Have you been reading too many stories? Are you crazy? Invisibility? Why don’t you try turning invisible for me!"
"Then where did she go? She couldn’t have just jumped off the Starship and become interstellar trash, could she?"
The guard Beastman was left speechless. He wanted to say something, but it seemed he didn’t know how to explain it either.
They had indeed searched the entire Starship and found no one.
But she had definitely been brought onto the Starship.
None of them knew what had happened in those few minutes.
Just as the Beastman who suggested Invisibility had said, could she really have jumped from the Starship to become space junk?
Compared to that, the idea of Bai Zhi turning invisible, while unbelievable, seemed to be the most plausible explanation.
As the two argued, the lead Beastman said, "Whatever. Just turn the Starship back for now. No matter where she is, she won’t be able to escape!"
Hearing this, Bai Zhi’s heart leaped into her throat again.
’I just hope Xing Fan and the others notice I’m missing soon and can find someone to save me.’
’Otherwise, if I’m really taken to that place they mentioned, it might be impossible for them to ever find me again!’
