Chapter 231: A MARRIAGE OF CONVENIENCE

Bai Feng looked up from the document resting before him.

He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he finished reading the final line, closed the folder with deliberate care and set it neatly aside before allowing his attention to settle fully on the man who had just entered.

"It has." A faint smile touched his lips, subtle but genuine. "I was beginning to wonder whether your patients intended to keep you indefinitely."

The remark drew an easy laugh from Yanchen.

He slipped his jacket from his shoulders, hanging it over the back of the chair before taking his seat.

Only then did he notice the cup waiting in front of him.

Heat shimmered off the surface, carrying a fragrance that was delicate and a little sweet, like the first warm day after a long winter.

The scent unwound slowly, threading through the air until the space itself felt softer for having it there.

Jasmine..

He had told Bai Feng this, only once.

Yanchen smiled a little, before picking it up.

"My favorite.."

Seeing that he had gotten it right, Bai Feng felt his heart beat speed up.

Badum..

Badum..

The man in front of him was on another league, far away from him yet regardless of his status, he always treated him with respect.

Remembering his favorite tea was the least he could do.

Yanchen placed the cup down, his eyes slowly trailed over him, setting nicely on his face.

How beautiful.

The man was the wine, the older he got, the sweeter he became.

"Are you trying to eat me with your eyes? I can feel the lust all the way here.."

Yanchen laughed though his gaze didn’t break, Bai Feng was the one who had broken eye contact but Yanchen eyes we’re still on him.

"I can’t help but stare, every time I see you, you’ve grown beautiful. I can’t say I’m not mesmerized.."

Bai Feng smiled, he had grown used to the typical, robotic flirting.

Most alphas we’re built that way.

"I called you here on a more formal matter, please take a look and give me your response.."

Yanchen took the folder, flipping through the files be without uttering a single word.

After five minutes, he placed the folder down.

"A marriage of convenience...huh"

Yanchen crossed his hands, Bai Feng wanting to get married him made no sense, there were more successful alphas who would drop everything and marry him.

Although he was an alpha, he wasn’t worth much.

"Can I ask why? It seems out of character for you to choose someone like me.."

Bai Feng raised a brow, what was he trying to say?

"Someone like you? I could search the entire earth but there’s no one like you, I choose you cause you’re the best, please don’t bring yourself down."

Yanchen paused, then smiled "You want me to be your husband because you think I’m the best?? I must have some damn good looks."

-_-

"Aren’t you flattering yourself too much?"

Yanchen tapped the table lightly, getting married now definitely saved him from having to marry someone his parents chose for him.

But what was in it for Bai Feng?

And what did he need from him for three months?

"What’s in it for me?? The contract says no intimacy, kids, even falling in love is out of it. So I’m just your model husband for three months, it’s a big commitment, so what’s in it for me?"

Bai Feng leaned back slightly.

"I left that part blank on purpose."

Yanchen’s brow lifted, waiting for him to explain himself further before he said anything back.

"I’m not going to pretend to know what you want, so you tell me. Whatever it is, within reason, I’ll put it in the contract myself." Bai Feng’s tone stayed even the whole time, as if he had already accepted whatever answer might come next.

Yanchen studied him for a moment, searching his face for the catch he was certain had to be hiding somewhere in that offer. There wasn’t one. Bai Feng’s expression remained patient and unreadable, the same composed look he wore in every meeting, in every negotiation, the one that made grown men second guess themselves across a table.

He didn’t need a few days to think. The answer had already settled in his chest before Bai Feng finished speaking, clear and unshaken. He had walked in expecting to negotiate a number, a clause, something with edges he could push against. Instead he found himself reaching for something else entirely, something that had nothing to do with money or reputation at all.

"You’ll live with me for those three months. We’ll share the same bed, and every morning and every night, you’ll have breakfast and dinner with me. That’s all I want."

The room went quiet.

Bai Feng’s fingers stilled against the folder in front of him, the composure on his face cracking for the briefest second before he caught it and smoothed it back into place.

"Live with you?" His voice came out lower than he meant it to. He had expected money. He had expected Yanchen to name some absurd figure just to see if he would actually agree to it, the kind of number an alpha threw out to test how far an omega would bend before he broke. He hadn’t expected this.

"You heard me." Yanchen’s arms stayed crossed, his expression giving nothing away, though there was something steady in the way he held eye contact, refusing to let Bai Feng look elsewhere.

"That wasn’t part of the discussion." Bai Feng reached for the folder again, flipping it back open as though rereading the terms might change what had just been said out loud. It didn’t. The page in front of him still read the same, still left the same blank space Yanchen had just filled in himself.

"It is now." Yanchen uncrossed his arms and leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows against the table. "You said whatever I wanted, within reason. This is reasonable. We’re supposed to be married for three months, aren’t we? Married people live together. They eat together. They sleep in the same house, in the same room, most of the time in the same bed. I’m not asking for anything a real husband wouldn’t already have."

Bai Feng opened his mouth, then closed it again.

He hadn’t thought of it that way, though he supposed he should have. A marriage of convenience still had to look convincing from the outside, and separate residences would raise more questions than they solved. Reporters would ask why the newlyweds kept two addresses. His mother would ask worse.

Still, there was a difference between logistics and what Yanchen had just described.

"The contract says no intimacy." Bai Feng’s voice came out sharper than he intended, and he immediately regretted the edge in it.

"Sharing a bed isn’t intimacy." Yanchen’s mouth curved, something almost teasing in it now. "Unless you’re planning something I don’t know about."

"That’s not what I meant."

"Relax." Yanchen sat back again, the ease returning to his posture as quickly as it had left. "I’m not going to touch you. You said no intimacy and I’ll follow it. But there’s a difference between not touching you and pretending we live in separate houses. If people are going to believe this, it has to look real, doesn’t it?"
