Chapter 162: YOUR MESSAGE SCARED ME HALF TO DEATH

I’m no small man. You know that too. But recently I’ve been living with someone who makes me feel small and insignificant in a way I can’t explain and can’t seem to stop. He towers over me and I’m an Alpha, so I should be able to repel him the way two Alphas always repel each other, but I can’t. I don’t know how to push this man away and I don’t know why I can’t, I need help before I do something stupid.

Guiying stopped walking in the corridor and read the message again. His thumb hovered over the screen because Limo didn’t ask for help under normal circumstances. Limo handled things quietly and off to the side, and would showed up later like nothing had happened. This message was not like that, and it had arrived at 8 a.m. with the line "I need help before I do something stupid."

And the problem was about another Alpha.

Guiying typed back.

I’m on my way. Let your staff know I’m coming, and make sure there’s no embarrassment waiting for me at the door. I woke up to an empty bed this morning, and my husband was gone before dawn without a word, so I am not in the mood for anyone’s nonsense. I’ll be there within the hour.

He put his phone in his pocket and turned back toward his room.

The art room would have to wait.

The bedroom was quiet, the morning light came through the curtains in thin strips, falling across the floor and the chair where Liuxian’s shirt still lay.

Guiying stood in front of the wardrobe and pulled out what he wanted piece by piece.

White tee, grey Vivienne Westwood waistcoat buttoned over it, the Saturn pendant dropping against his chest. Dark grey barrel trousers, the ornate silver buckle threaded through the dark leather belt. Black penny loafers, red insoles catching the light as he slid his feet in. The beret tilted over his blonde hair, square frames on his nose. Silver rings, the Seiko watch fastened at his wrist, black leather gloves, the navy Miu Miu bag lifted off the chair.

He looked at himself once in the mirror and left the room.

Uncle Wang was in the entrance hall with his hands folded.

"Will Haiyan be driving today, Master Xue?"

"No." Guiying took the Lexus key from the rack by the door. "I’m driving myself."

"Have a good day, Master Xue," Uncle Wang said.

Guiying pushed through the front door.

The matte sand beige Lexus LX sat in the driveway, black rims, black accents, the morning light sitting flat across the bonnet. He tossed his bag onto the passenger seat, got in, adjusted the mirror, and pulled out of the gates.

First stop, Yang Entertainment.

After that, nowhere in particular.

---

Beijing on a Thursday morning moved differently from the rest of the week. The traffic ran thinner, the pavements less urgent, the city exhaling in small increments before the weekend pulled everything tight again.

Guiying drove with one hand on the wheel, the window cracked, cool air coming in against his face. The beret sat low over his forehead. The Lexus was smooth beneath him, wide, unhurried, finding its own pace through the streets while his mind turned over Limo’s message.

He turned the music on low. Something instrumental, nothing that required attention.

The Alpha in question was the interesting one. Limo had never mentioned anyone, not seriously, not in the way this message suggested, and the fact that it was another Alpha made it more complicated than a straightforward attraction. Two Alphas in proximity was already its own kind of tension, and if Limo was saying he couldn’t repel this one, couldn’t maintain the natural distance that Alphas kept between each other without thinking about it, then whatever was happening between them had already moved past something Limo could manage on his own terms.

The question was who.

Limo had been back from Canada for nearly a month, running Yang Entertainment, building something serious, and in all that time he had mentioned no one. Which meant this Alpha had arrived recently, or had been there a while and Limo had been quietly ignoring it until he couldn’t anymore.

Either way, by the time Limo was sending messages before nine in the morning saying he needed help before he did something stupid, the ignoring had clearly run its course.

Yang Entertainment’s building appeared on his left twenty minutes later, glass and steel, the company name in clean silver lettering above the entrance. He pulled into the visitor bay, cut the engine, sat for a moment with both hands still on the wheel.

For Limo to reach out like that, whatever was happening with this Alpha had gotten under his skin in a way very few things ever did, and Guiying intended to find out exactly what it was.

He picked up his bag, got out of the car, walked across the forecourt and pushed through the entrance doors.

The receptionist looked up and opened her mouth.

"Yang Limo is expecting me," Guiying said, without slowing down.

She closed her mouth and reached for her phone.

---

A young woman in a navy blazer appeared from the elevator before the receptionist had finished dialling, walking toward him with the composed efficiency of someone who had been told to expect him and had taken that instruction seriously.

"Mr. Tang," she said. "Mr. Yang is waiting for you on the fourteenth floor. I’ll take you up."

Guiying followed her to the elevator.

The fourteenth floor opened into a wide corridor lined with framed album covers and award plaques, the particular aesthetic of an entertainment company that had been in business long enough to have things worth displaying. The young woman led him to the end of the corridor, knocked once on a set of double doors and pushed them open.

Yang Limo was standing at the window with his hands in his pockets, looking out at the city below with the expression of a man who had been standing there long enough that the view had stopped registering.

He turned when Guiying came in.

For a moment he just looked at him, taking in the beret, the waistcoat, the barrel trousers, the whole assembled picture of Guiying having clearly gotten dressed with intention this morning, and his mouth curved.

"Baby," he said. "You look incredible. New hair too?" He tilted his head. "Is that your natural colour?"

"Don’t change the subject," Guiying said, dropping his bag on the nearest chair. "Your message scared me half to death. Sit down and talk."
