Chapter 537: Chapter 348: Breaking Through with the Flesh

After Shangguan Li issued the final ultimatum to Sikinkov, they ignored him and continued to participate in the battle against the fierce beasts.

"Death..." Sikinkov stared blankly at the back of Shangguan Li, unconsciously clenching the pistol in his hand.

Just as he was at a loss, his consciousness seemed to be struck by something, causing his eyes to squint suddenly as some emotion appeared in his pupils.

He kept mumbling: "Death... death?..."

The Anti-Violence Team Member, afraid that Sikinkov might be driven to despair, quickly grabbed his wrist and said, "Director, don’t listen to that mercenary’s nonsense about death. It’s enough that we’ve tried our best! We’ve done all we can. Let’s evacuate!"

Sikinkov kept repeating the word "death," but gradually his eyes regained their spirit. He stood up and ran to his hovercar: "There is a way... Yes! There is a way!"

The Anti-Violence Team Members didn’t know what he was up to, but since he was willing to get in the car, they returned to the floating airship and followed him.

Driving his hovercar towards the Eastern Border District, Sikinkov called his assistant, Yang Le: "Yang Le, where are you? Still at the bureau, right? Okay, listen to me, there’s something I need you to do..."

...

At the Eastern Border District, refugees were still helplessly waiting for hope that seemed nowhere in sight.

At this moment, a hovercar from the Public Security Bureau flew overhead, landing on an open field outside the fire identification zone of the Rust Wall M6 District.

The moment Sikinkov appeared, many border refugees recognized the director of the Public Security Bureau, exclaiming in surprise.

"Why is he here?!"

"Director! Please, save us!"

"The beasts are killing us, and so are the government troops! What are we supposed to do?!"

"We really have nowhere left to go!"

Sikinkov raised his hands and shouted, "Everyone quiet down! Please calm down and listen to me. Maintain order, do not panic! I am here to give you an explanation!"

The noisy chatter gradually subsided. People stopped talking and carefully watched Sikinkov.

With no more noise, Sikinkov finally didn’t have to shout. His voice softened as he said, "Please be patient and give me a little time. Help is on its way."

People looked at each other, surprised.

"Didn’t they say the security forces have gone to help the corporate giants escape? Who else could be coming to help us?"

Sikinkov didn’t say anything more, just looked towards the sky above the Rust Wall, as if waiting for something.

Before long, he murmured, "They’re here..."

Everyone looked in the direction he was gazing and saw a large fleet of hovercars approaching from the sky, densely packed like a swarm of bees, numbering in the hundreds.

The hovercars began to land one after another on the nearby open ground. When the people inside emerged, the surrounding border refugees were stunned.

These individuals were all members of the New Moon City authorities, wearing uniforms from different departments, with positions ranging from high to low.

The highest-ranked among them, like Sikinkov, were heads of important government departments.

The lowest were those normally inconspicuous grassroots low-ranking officials.

They rushed towards Sikinkov from all directions, looking at him with a determined gaze; even his assistant Yang Le was among them.

These people belonged to different departments and held various positions, many of whom probably didn’t even know each other, but they had one thing in common: extreme dissatisfaction with the oppressive policies of City Council President Amir.

These people, usually well-dressed and lofty, taking their various privileges for granted.

But at this life-or-death moment for millions in the border area, the remaining conscience and humanity in their hearts overwhelmed everything, compelling them to come from the Inner City to this place.

Compared to the enormous, bloated government apparatus, the number of people who came here was pitifully small. The vast majority of officials might already be with Amir, heading to the airport to prepare to evacuate.

But for Sikinkov, it was enough; seeing a few hundred colleagues with a conscience come was really enough.

Sikinkov was the first to walk to the edge of the M6 District’s fire identification zone. He took out his phone and called the Rusted Wall Defense Command Center: "This is Sikinkov, director of the New Moon City Public Security Bureau. Please connect me to the commander of your Rusted Wall M6 Patrol Station."

Shortly after, the call was transferred, and the voice of the M6 District commander was heard: "Director Sikinkov."

Sikinkov said, "I am now at the edge of the M6 District’s fire identification zone. Please look over; you should be able to see me."

He held his phone in one hand and waved his other hand high in the air.

After a moment of silence, the commander’s surprised voice came through: "What are you doing there?"

Sikinkov replied, "I am providing all the help I can to the border refugees here. With me are several hundred colleagues from various municipal departments."

"We are unanimously requesting that your forces lift the fire blockade of the M6 District and allow the border refugees to enter the city."

The commander quickly responded, "I’m sorry, but I can’t do that. The fire blockade was a direct order from City Council President Amir, and I must obey."

Sikinkov, in a calm tone, said: "Listen, you can activate the recording function on your phone or have your men film as evidence. I will take full responsibility for all consequences; it will never implicate you."

After he spoke, he cautiously took a few steps forward, entering the fire identification zone.

"Da-da-da-da-da—"

Soon, soldiers fired, and a burst of bullets hit the ground in front of Sikinkov, scattering dirt and stones, forcing him back.

The commander’s voice came through: "Director, I told you, I am under direct orders from City Council President. I have the authority to take any necessary emergency measures in the field."
