Chapter 536: Chapter 347: Dead End (Part 2)
Shangguan Li nodded, "It’s okay, just gave me the shot, let’s continue the fight."
Dongdong stepped forward to stand in front of Shangguan Li, facing the gathering fierce beasts, and said, "Don’t stray too far from me, hide behind me if you can’t hold on, I’ll protect you."
Shangguan Li looked at Dongdong’s back and was reminded of a few months ago, when this was just a little brat she could hold down with one hand. She couldn’t help but have a complex smile.
Just as Dongdong and Shangguan Li, the master and apprentice, were fighting together, Chu Nanyi’s voice came through the communication channel: "Everyone, attention, the bombing airship is coming. The target is the tunneling insect’s tunnel. Stay away from it!"
The tunneling insect’s tunnel is the source from which the fierce beasts pour out, and blocking it with manpower alone is certainly too difficult.
So Shangguan Li had already arranged that after meeting up with the Wolf Squad, they would fight and retreat, maintain a safe distance, and then wait for the bombing airship to arrive.
The bombing airship was carrying high-yield warheads, and if they could collapse and block the tunnel in one go, the pressure everyone faced afterward would greatly decrease!
"Buzz—" The engine roar came from high above as the bombing airship appeared on the battlefield, hovering over the tunneling insect’s tunnel.
Meanwhile, everyone had already retreated several hundred meters away, out of the range of the bombing.
"The bombing is about to start, everyone prepare for the impact."
Shortly after Chu Nanyi’s words, the bombing airship locked onto the tunneling insect’s tunnel, and high-yield bombs whistled out from the cabin, like a black rainstorm.
"Boom boom boom boom—" Pillars of fire rose in the tunnel, the dazzling light reminiscent of solar flares, causing everyone to turn their gaze aside.
The shockwave spread with roaring heat, and those hiding behind cover felt the ground shake violently, as scorching gales swept around.
After the bombing ended, everyone looked toward the tunneling insect’s tunnel.
Thick smoke lingered there, and burning flames rose with black smoke into the sky, churning like monstrous claws.
The tunnel exit had collapsed in the explosion, with many smoldering carcasses of fierce beasts around it; those that hadn’t rushed out in time were buried in the rocks beneath the surface.
Seeing this, everyone’s spirits soared, and they cheered loudly.
As long as the tunnel was sealed, the fierce beasts would be like rootless water, and eventually they would all be eliminated.
But it didn’t take long for their fantasy to be shattered.
As the ground tremors became more intense, there was something massive underground approaching.
"Boom—" When the tremor reached its peak, the once-sealed tunnel exit suddenly burst open again, and the enormous body of the tunneling insect emerged, triggering a rain of rocks and beast remains.
The collapsed tunnel was once again opened by the tunneling insect.
Moreover, this creature was extremely cunning; after opening the tunnel, it didn’t attack everyone, nor did it linger, it simply burrowed back underground to hide.
From the communicator came the bombing airship pilot’s voice: "No good, our bombs don’t have enough power; they can only collapse the tunnel’s exit area. There’s still a long expanse of tunnel space underground, completely unaffected, and the tunneling insect can easily re-open it."
Seeing the dense throng of fierce beasts continuing to surge out of the tunnel, Shangguan Li clicked his tongue unwillingly, "Is there no way for the ground radar to locate that tunneling insect?"
The pilot answered, "We can’t locate it. The tunneling insect is lurking at a depth beyond the ground radar’s maximum detection range."
Shangguan Li: "So that means we’ll have to fight it head-on, using manpower to continue blocking?"
Pilot: "Based on the calculated data feedback, to completely destroy the underground tunnel and kill the tunneling insect, we need a much higher magnitude of explosive power. We have no weapons in stock that can achieve this."
"Even if we found a weapon of that level, detonating it on the surface would be useless. It must be transported deep into the tunnel first... Frankly, it’s a mission of great difficulty."
Everyone was left with no choice but to continue fighting the beasts as before, to buy time for the evacuation at the rear.
Amidst the fierce struggle, suddenly a hovercar flew in from the distance, followed closely by a pursuing airship, marked as a Public Security Bureau vehicle.
That hovercar descended directly in the center of the battlefield, and when the door opened, someone unexpected dashed out.
Sikinkov emerged with a small handgun for protection, his eyes bloodshot with anger. He kept firing at the surrounding fierce beasts, while shouting at the airship overhead.
"Come on! Aren’t you supposed to protect me? Then do it!!!"
Several Anti-Violence Team Members standing at the edge of the airship’s cabin door broke out in cold sweat, frightened by Sikinkov’s actions.
Seeing a beast lunging at Sikinkov, an Anti-Violence Team Member exclaimed, "Covering fire! All units prepare for a rapid descent! Hurry hurry hurry!!!"
The airship’s ground cannons crazily swept over the beasts, creating clouds of blood mist and howls, as the Anti-Violence Team Members began to jump down.
Sikinkov, who in his youth served on the front lines, had long since lost his combat edge, living a life of privilege post-politics. A few rounds of explosions brought him to the ground, covered in mud as he slipped at his feet, utterly disheveled.
The moment the Anti-Violence Team Members landed, Sikinkov rushed towards the densest area of beasts, shouting all the while, "Come on! Protect me! All of you come over!!!"
The Anti-Violence Team Members instantly felt their spirits sink to rock bottom, realizing Sikinkov’s intention.
The Public Security forces had been commandeered directly by City Council President Amir, meaning Sikinkov was stripped of command.
The Anti-Violence Fourth Section’s main force had been dispatched to the airport to assist the elite in fleeing, and they were temporarily reassigned to protect the City Council’s high-ranking officials.
Aside from their protection mission, they weren’t authorized to engage in any other actions, or it would be seen as insubordination.
So Sikinkov deliberately risked his life, throwing himself among the beasts. It was a maneuver to force them to join the battle at the Edge.
Sikinkov was clearly at wit’s end, unsure what to do, opting instead to charge into the fray like a moth to the flame.
While Sikinkov acted recklessly, Shangguan Li noticed him immediately, being nearby.
She rushed over, slicing down a few anxious beasts, grabbed Sikinkov by the collar, and demanded, "What are you doing here instead of negotiating with the City Council? When will the Rust Wall doors open?!"
Sikinkov’s head hung low, the tension in him snapped like a breaking string, and he choked out through tears, "I’m sorry... I’ve let you all down... I can’t get those refugees into the city..."
In Sikinkov’s recount, Shangguan Li learned what had transpired with the Rust Wall.
She truly hadn’t expected the City Council to be so inhumane...
The Mercenaries had set up the line of defense and done all the hard work, yet all it needed was the City Council’s order to open the gates for the people, and these beasts in human clothing instead had the Rust Wall’s Defense Team fire upon the refugees...
While Shangguan Li was stunned, Dongdong called out, "Master! Give us a hand over here! We’re short of people!"
Shangguan Li snapped back to reality, grabbed Sikinkov’s shoulders firmly, and said seriously, "Listen, we can only try to buy as much time as possible; we can’t keep fighting endlessly."
"You have to find a way to get the Rust Wall to open up quickly and get those refugees inside, so we can retreat sooner and reduce our sacrifice."
Sikinkov, crying, said, "But I can’t do it..."
"Slap!"
Shangguan Li slapped Sikinkov across the face, perhaps trying to wake him up, and pointed angrily at him, "I’m telling you! Don’t tell me it can’t be done!"
"Every minute, every second, our brothers are falling here. We’re holding the line just to buy time for you! Every second you hesitate, every additional death, will be on your head!"
She pushed Sikinkov away, looking at him with complex emotions, "Don’t blame me for being ruthless; I’m laying it out as it is. I have no trust in those in power, including you."
"The only reason I’ve brought so many people to fight for you is because Director Su trusts you. I trust him, he trusts you, so I have no choice but to trust you too."
"As long as you are alive, I’ll assume you’re still trying, and I’ll try my best to buy you time."
"If you truly believe you can’t do it, then put a bullet in your own head. If you die, I’ll assume the whole plan has failed and will immediately order a full retreat. I won’t let everyone make a meaningless sacrifice!"
