Chapter 510: Chapter 335: Calamity Descends
[Night, New Moon City Rusted Wall]
Late winter to early spring, the night air was still cold, and the soldiers of the defense unit patrolling the rusted wall were wearing winter coats.
Two new recruits and veterans were pacing back and forth on the wall. The night was long, and there was no one watching them, so they chatted to pass the time:
"Do you think the news about the Celestial Gate Patrol Station falling and beasts coming to New Moon City is true?"
"I think it’s fake. How could beasts have such power? They’re essentially just animals driven by wild instincts. Have you ever seen animals defeat a high-tech army?"
"That’s what you say, but I feel like we should keep watching the news. Something’s off at the Border District lately. A lot of people have been fleeing over the past month, and every day people from the Border District try to sneak into the Inner City and get caught. And now there are reports about beasts. I wonder if there’s a connection?"
"You’re overthinking. The refugee situation at the Border District is because the Wolf Assault is going to war with the Crow’s Nest and the Ashen Gang. It’s just a coincidence that it aligns with the beast reports. There’s no real connection."
"It would be best if that’s true. I’m just worried about the ’what if.’ If something really happens, it could be trouble."
"Well, it’s not something we with a monthly salary of 6000 should worry about."
As the two chatted idly, the veteran noticed the new recruit was slightly shaking, so he tapped the back of his head, "What are you shaking for?"
"I wasn’t shaking." The new recruit rubbed his head, looked at the veteran with some confusion, and said, "It was you who was shaking."
They stared at each other for a moment, suddenly realizing something.
Everything in their line of sight was trembling.
At first, the tremors were small, barely enough for humans to feel, only causing their clothes and hair to gently quiver.
Soon, the tremors became more noticeable, and you could clearly feel the ground shaking beneath your feet, as if an invisible giant hand was shaking the rusted wall.
Eventually, the tremors became so intense that the field of vision started to shudder. The defense towers on the wall were shaking, constantly dropping dust, with the weight-bearing structures clashing with metallic resonance.
"What’s going on, an earthquake?!"
Both men quickly grabbed the nearby wall, looking around in bewilderment. Other soldiers had the same reaction, none knowing what was happening.
As the tremors grew stronger, a muffled sound began to emanate from underground. Initially faint, it grew into a thundering sound echoing throughout New Moon City.
"Boom—" When the tremors reached their peak, an explosive roar came from the horizon’s edge.
The soldiers looked in shock at the scene in the distance. From their vantage point on the towering rusted wall, they could clearly see the strange sight afar.
In the northern area of the Border District, some mysterious force suddenly erupted from the ground, as if a massive bomb had detonated deep below. Buildings crumbled, and earth and debris burst skyward, creating a dust canopy.
Voices emerged from the Border District, with frantic and bewildered tones, as no one knew what was happening.
The soldiers looked at the direction of the anomaly, seemingly sensing something, their faces puzzled, "What is that...?"
The night sky was filled with swirling dust clouds, suffocating and oppressive. Amidst the rising dust cover, the lights from surrounding buildings cast an enormous, unimaginable shadow.
The giant shadow was initially shrouded in the dust, barely discernible, only revealing ghostly green eyes flickering in the darkness, exuding a peculiar glow, creating an uncontrollable sense of dread and oppression.
As the dust settled and the gigantic shadow became visible to all, everyone was taken aback.
It was a massive Tunneling Insect, its vast back and twisting limbs emerging with debris and soil, shedding the heavy earth and rock from its skin, its eyes glowing an eerie green in the moonlight.
Its enormous, terrifying jaws opened wide, producing a menacing and powerful roar that echoed across New Moon City.
"Roar—"
This Tunneling Insect was the very one observed by Hegemony Company’s forces. From outside the Celestial Gate Patrol Station in the Land of No Master, it charged towards New Moon City, burrowing a tunnel over three hundred kilometers long, a thousand meters underground.
This underground tunnel made the surface defenses of the Celestial Gate Patrol Station futile, and the beast horde that should have been stopped followed the Tunneling Insect out in a frenzy.
Thus, disaster descended upon the Border District.
Endless beasts surged into the Border District like a tide, overturning parked vehicles, toppling less sturdy buildings into ruin from the rampages of large beasts.
By then, it was deep into the night, and many people had already fallen asleep. The sudden disaster struck like thunder in the night, ruthlessly shattering the peace.
When the people of the Border District awoke from their slumber, they found the outside world transformed, unfamiliar monsters rampaging through the streets, unleashing twisted, piercing roars, their fear reaching a peak.
Some panic-stricken individuals hid in their homes, parents hurriedly pulling curtains, piling furniture near doors and windows, doing their best to comfort their terrified, crying children, urging them to stay quiet.
Others, caught outside, faced the oncoming beasts with faces full of despair and helplessness, screaming, running desperately, seeking refuge in the nearest buildings.
