Chapter 87: Chapter 87 Jealousy_1
After Lin Xiaoyu uttered the words "devote myself to you", he stared deeply into Qin Sisi’s eyes, his face filled with intense anticipation and anxiety.
Before Qin Sisi could respond, the black cat in her arms suddenly meowed loudly, giving both Qin Sisi and Lin Xiaoyu a fright.
Lin Xiaoyu asked curiously, "What’s wrong with your spirit pet?"
Qin Sisi responded somewhat helplessly, "Nothing really, perhaps... it’s just a bit hungry."
In actuality, Qin Sisi felt a tiny sense of satisfaction at Ye You’s big reaction.
As she spoke, Qin Sisi glanced down at Ye You to find a look of anger starting to flash in his purple eyes, making her heart clench.
Lin Xiaoyu then seemed to understand, "I see, I’ll go cook then."
"Lin Xiaoyu." As Lin Xiaoyu turned around, Qin Sisi called him back from behind. For Qin Sisi, although she had no romantic experience, in her heart, things were clear-cut: she either liked or didn’t like someone. Affairs of the heart couldn’t be muddy, and more importantly, she couldn’t lead anyone on.
Lin Xiaoyu turned back, a small smile playing on his lips as he spoke softly, "Mhm, I’m here, no need to raise your voice."
Qin Sisi stepped forward, looking into Lin Xiaoyu’s eyes, her voice serious: "I also want to thank you for trusting me. If you didn’t, I couldn’t have saved your mother. You should know by now that I’m not an ordinary person. Even if you were to believe in the existence of ghosts, you will never truly understand me. We’re not suited for each other. However, since you think we’re fated, let’s just be ordinary friends."
A disappointed expression surfaced on Lin Xiaoyu’s face and he asked somewhat unwillingly, "You won’t even give it a chance?"
Qin Sisi shook her head firmly, and laid it on thick: "I’m sorry, I already have a boyfriend."
This statement was a rejection to Lin Xiaoyu, and also a test for Ye You.
They shared the same bed every night and embraced each other daily, even had their fair share of kisses, but did that constitute a boyfriend?
If not, why were they so intimate?
If so, it felt like something was missing.
Upon hearing this, Lin Xiaoyu’s demeanor instantly drooped, and he stood there, not moving for quite a while, resembling an eggplant frozen by frost.
Feeling somewhat guilty, Qin Sisi was about to console him when Lin Xiaoyu suddenly asked, "Your boyfriend, does he also catch ghosts?"
Qin Sisi paused before replying, "Yes, which is why we have a common language."
Lin Xiaoyu nodded helplessly, eventually giving Qin Sisi a carefree smile, sighing as he said, "Alright, I understand. If we’re not meant to be, then we’ll just be ordinary friends. If you ever need help in the future, feel free to tell me."
Seeing Lin Xiaoyu’s smile, Qin Sisi finally breathed a sigh of relief, and candidly responded, "Okay."
They shared a laugh. Though there was no romantic connection between them, this newfound friendship was something worth celebrating.
With Lin Xiaoyu off to cook, Qin Sisi sat under the eaves holding Ye You, soaking in the sun.
Ye You seemed to be still angry, relentlessly scratching at Qin Sisi with his claws, leaving multiple scratch marks on her pants.
Annoyed, Qin Sisi muttered, "Stop it, we’ll talk about this tonight."
Ye You gave a disgruntled snort and spat out, "You wait."
Qin Sisi was slightly taken aback. She still did not fully understand Ye You’s temperament, and she had no idea what he might do in the evening.
At that moment, Lin Xiaofang came out of the house. She took the cookware from Lin Xiaoyu’s hands, asking him to go and chat with Qin Sisi.
Fearing Ye You would become even more upset, Qin Sisi tried to keep her distance from Lin Xiaoyu. But since Lin Xiaoyu sat beside her, chatting idly to fill the silence, Sisi didn’t have the heart to ignore him.
After breakfast was ready, Lin Xiaofang called her brother and Qin Sisi to eat. The meals cooked in the large rural pots were simple but delectable.
Qin Sisi asked Lin Xiaoyu to get an empty bowl for Ye You to have some food. Aware of the black cat’s importance to Qin Sisi, Lin Xiaoyu did as asked, carrying some food to Ye You and even trying to rub the smooth fur on Ye You’s back in appeasement.
Unexpectedly, Ye You suddenly let out a loud meow at him, his eyes fierce and a sharp fang exposed from the corner of his mouth.
Lin Xiaoyu jumped in fright. Qin Sisi quickly rushed over, patting Ye You’s head as she cooed, "All right, all right, eat your food, be a good boy!"
At Qin Sisi’s cajoling words, Ye You seemed taken aback. He cast Qin Sisi a reproachful look before lowering his head to eat.
In Ye You’s gaze, Qin Sisi seemed to see a hint of grievance. Startled, she was only brought back to reality when Lin Xiaoyu called out to her.
Qin Sisi spared Ye You a reluctant glance before returning to the round table to continue her meal.
Lin Xiaoyu laughed, "Your cat is pretty impressive."
Qin Sisi replied, "Yeah, with my job being so dangerous, how could it protect me if it wasn’t?"
Lin Xiaoyu smiled awkwardly, not knowing what to say.
Meanwhile, Lin Xiaofang, curious about Qin Sisi, couldn’t resist asking, "Sisi, what brings you to our place? Are you just passing by or is there something you need?"
Qin Sisi answered, "I’m looking for someone."
Lin Xiaofang continued, "Who are you looking for? Tell us, maybe we can help."
Qin Sisi pondered for a moment. Being a stranger in a strange land, she figured maybe Lin Xiaoyu could indeed be some assistance.
So Qin Sisi said, "I’m looking for a kid named Zhao Xiaopeng, he’s six years old this year."
Lin Xiaofang paused before saying, "I have a distant cousin whose child is named Zhao Xiaopeng. He’s about six or seven years old. I don’t know if he’s the one you’re looking for."
Lin Xiaoyu joined in, "I do remember such a kid, but I can’t quite recall his name. Are you sure it’s Zhao Xiaopeng?"
Lin Xiaofang responded, "Of course, I’m sure. This kid just started first grade. I bumped into him on the road once, and his mom showed me his schoolwork. The name on the book was Zhao Xiaopeng."
At this news, Qin Sisi’s heart leaped, and she quickly asked, "Could you take me to see him?"
Lin Xiaoyu asked uncertainly, "Sure, but why are you looking for a kid?"
Since the Lin siblings already knew a bit about her identity, Qin Sisi didn’t want to go through the tiresome task of fabricating a lie, so she said directly, "His mother from his previous life wants to see him."
This was not entirely accurate because Wang Luo’s mother-son bond with Zhao Xiaopeng was from over a thousand years ago.
But Qin Sisi couldn’t bring herself to claim that his mother from many lifetimes ago wanted to see him. Even if it was true, no one would believe it, and she might even become the butt of a joke.
Lin Xiaoyu and Lin Xiaofang exchanged a glance, both their faces reflecting disbelief.
