Chapter 422: Chapter 318: Fearless!
The old people came in one by one. Here, all dragons must be in human form, not dragon form, according to the rules.
The seats here were extremely large, each person could occupy a vast space, clearly, these seats were not designed specifically for them. However, each councilor had long become accustomed to this arrangement.
When everyone had arrived, the last three slowly entered.
They were the chairmen of the Dragon Clan Council, the three people who truly held power over the entire Dragon Clan. They were all dressed in grey robes, without any adornments, and the one in the middle held a scepter in one hand.
Suddenly, everyone present stood up and applauded to welcome their arrival.
In the center, opposite Tyl, were three plain chairs. They were small, without any patterns, but those three chairs signified the pinnacle of the Dragon Clan’s power.
The three old men arrived at the chairs, and the one holding the scepter raised it and opened his mouth to say: "I, Chairman Asus, hereby declare the council meeting open!"
The Chairman is not responsible for specifics, they just need to ensure the meeting proceeds in order. Today’s main topic is to assess Tyl’s admission into the council, so it’s largely procedural. However, more than half the councilors must agree for Tyl to officially become a councilor.
All councilors have the right to question or support Tyl, and Tyl needs to refute these questions and state his point of view.
Obviously, Tyl came prepared, all his answers were flawless, and his experience had no deficits. When serving in the human world, he fought bravely, leading the Black Dragon Empire to successful resistance against the then-strongest White Dragon Empire. After retiring, he was diligent and did his duty in the White Dragon Empire’s Dragon God Temple, abiding by promises and not breaking his oath, not revealing any secrets of the Black Dragon Empire to the White Dragon Empire.
Clearly, the council had no reasons to prevent him from becoming a councilor.
In the end, Chairman Asus said, "Well, as a final summary before the councilor vote, Tyl, do you have anything else you want to say?"
This too was a regular stage; formally, the candidate would normally express appreciation and make summing-up statements.
Tyl nodded, a smile appeared on his face, and said, "Yes, honorable Chairman, I do."
"Please proceed."
Tyl nodded, then took a deep breath, letting all the remaining timidity and unease in his heart disappear with his breath.
Then, he began to speak.
"Many, many years ago, God created this world and all its creatures. But have you ever wondered what they created first?"
Everyone fell silent, their eyes flashing with surprise.
"The giants, God’s firstborn, our elder brothers. Then it was us, the giant dragons, the tiny brothers with an endless greed."
"The giants were selfless, they voluntarily helped each creature created by God or evolved naturally. They asked for nothing, sacrificing everything. Whereas the giant dragons at that time were a group of naive beasts. We followed the talents given by God, multiplying, fighting, establishing the original tribe on our own planet. It was the giants who helped us truly gain civilization, who helped us build language, taught us how to use the Dragon Power in our bodies to exert fighting aura and magic and even assisted us in interstellar travel."
"But what did we repay our elder brothers with?"
"Betrayal, a shameful betrayal."
"I don’t know why, perhaps we have indeed carved the brand of betrayal deeply into our souls?"
"Look around, everyone! The seats, the floor, the ceiling, the walls, the exquisite patterns and giant language are everywhere."
"Yes, none of these belong to the Dragon Clan, all of these are plundered from the giants!"
"Even our most precious Sky-top Library in the Dragon Clan, we seized it from the giants."
"Now, we sit in their left-behind architecture and discourse freely, it’s disgusting."
Tyl said all these in one breath, his heart pounding. And all the councilors present were shocked.
They all knew about the giants’ civilization and this part of secret history. But all councilors have always avoided it, never daring to proclaim it so openly.
Regarding this past, even among councilors, there were two completely different views. A small part of the councilors believed that this was the greatest shame of the Dragon Clan, and that the Dragon Clan should strive to restore the glory of the giants. The majority of councilors, however, thought that victories and defeats were a common occurrence, history is written by the victor, and there’s no need to waste time over what happened in the past.
A long time ago, there had been major debates within the Dragon Clan, eventually leading to a serious civil war within the clan. At that time, all the dragons on Dragon Island were involved in the war which resulted in heavy losses.
The three chairmen of the Dragon Clan who had not appeared for many years simultaneously took action and ended the war. This war also fragmented Dragon Island into over seventy islands of various sizes.
Normally, the only way for the Dragon Clan to learn about this piece of history is through the Sky-top Library located at the center of this Floating Island. Only the human-shaped councilors can freely enter. Since that day, the Sky-top Library is no longer freely open. If a councilor tries to enter the library to read, they must get approval from the chairman and their visit is recorded.
And from that day on, all the councilors expressly forbade the discussion of the Giants at any occasion.
That was a very, very long time ago, so long ago that even the Dragon Clan itself had nearly forgotten about it.
But now, Tyl suddenly brought it up again.
Chairman Asus stood up, looking at Tyl, speaking in a low voice: "Enough, Tyl!"
However, Tyl shook his head, saying, "No, it’s not enough, Mr. Chairman. Look, we are cursed into our current state, we possess the strongest Dragon Power, yet we have to rely on humans for survival. And what’s worse, we even have to fabricate stories about the Dragon God intervening to gain human support; doesn’t that make you feel ashamed?"
Asus looked at Tyl, his scepter shimmering in his hand as he said, "Tyl, what exactly do you want to do?"
Tyl laughed, saying: "See, I want to say that we, the Dragon Clan, are truly a vile race that should be wiped out from this diversified universe. We betrayed our most respected elder brother without any reason, and we would betray each other over various nonsensical reasons, wouldn’t we?"
A councilor by Asus’s side suddenly stood up and roared: "Tyl! You’re still dwelling on your Dragon Knight issue!"
Yet, Tyl laughed again, saying: "Respected Councilor Gulelie, how could I ever forget? Have you forgotten that my current name, Tyl, is actually the name of my Dragon Knight?"
Councilor Gulelie snorted coldly, saying: "He is nothing more than a mere human, just a small pawn in our grand plan."
Upon hearing Gulelie’s statement, Asus slightly furrowed his brows. Obviously, those words were quite unpleasant.
"This is why, I dislike you, Councilor Gulelie." Tyl said with a laugh.
"You talk too much, Tyl, withdraw!" Asus rebuked. Clearly, this was a very noticeable face-saving hint. Tyl understood that among the three councilors, Chairman Asus was the most easygoing one. He didn’t completely consent with Tyl’s opinion, yet he had no plan of pursuing the matter further. If Tyl were to shut up now, his punishment would merely be banishment from Dragon Island at worst.
But, that wasn’t what Tyl desired.
"Clearly, Councilor Gulelie fails to understand what true friendship is. Even though you’ve already taken a human form, you still don’t understand the most precious thing to a human. " Tyl said.
Councilor Gulelie, however, roared with laughter: "Ha ha ha! Kid, have you started to conspicuously preach me? Don’t you forget, I am not a human, I am a dragon! And so are you!"
"Sometimes, I truly wish I were a human. As a member of the Dragon Clan, this kind of shame keeps me awake at night."
"Enough! Tyl! Leave this place immediately!"
Asus roared, the immense surge of energy even made Councilor Gulelie by his side stagger a bit, while the nearby councilors got knocked over.
"No, I have one more question for Councilor Gulelie." Tyl spat out blood from his mouth and roared, trembling all over.
"Speak!" Gulelie roared back.
"That balance plan for the Black Dragon Empire and White Dragon Empire, the one that involved killing my Dragon Knight, was it you who formulated it!" Tyl asked.
Upon hearing this question, Gulelie raised his head high, saying with the most firm voice:
"Yes! It was me! I personally ordered the killing of your Dragon Knight, Tyl! I also personally ordered the assassination of Little White Dragon’s Dragon Knight! All of these were my plans! This continent must maintain its balance amid turmoil! Only in this way can we find a way to lift the curse off our Dragon Clan! All this is for the mighty resurrection of the Dragon Clan! Not just you, I won’t allow anyone to become the one who disturbs this balance. Not you! Not him! Not even that Long Yi who recently emerged! I know you’ve been close to him lately and let me clearly state, I’ve been watching him. If he becomes powerful enough to disrupt the balance of the continent, he will be killed immediately as well! Are you satisfied with this answer, Tyl?"
Tyl laughed: "Yes, the great Councilor Gulelie, now that I’m satisfied, I can kill you without any hesitation!"
Roar!
The massive Black Dragon rushed into the sky and spewed out terrifying Dragon Breath towards Gulelie. Chairman Asus sighed, just about to lift up his scepter, but Gulelie had already charged out ahead of him.
Boom!
The massive impact dispersed the Dragon Breath. The colossal Black Dragon was suspended in mid-air, unable to move a muscle!
Down on the ground, Gulelie coldly watched the Black Dragon hanging above, sneering: "So, this is your strongest attack? If that is all, you are too far from being able to kill me!"
In the midst of the sky, the Black Dragon struggled, letting out a low growl: "Look, when you take the form of a dragon, you are nothing but a dying old man. But when you are in human form, you possess the greatest power, and you dare to audaciously claim that you are a Dragon, this is extreme irony."
Gulelie’s gaze flickered fiercely. After a while, he clenched his hand fiercely, and the huge Black Dragon plummeted to the ground, smashing the seat where Tyl had previously sat.
"Tyl, because of your actions, your Dragon Soul will not return to the Dragon Tomb, you will be sent to the Burial Ground, where you will never reincarnate!"
Gulelie roared. (To be continued. If you like this novel, you are welcome to vote for it on qidian.com, your support is my greatest inspiration. Mobile users can visit m.qidian.com to read.)
