Chapter 62: The Golden Scroll
"What kind of scroll is this?"
"It’s an ancient scroll my father discovered in some ancient ruins during one of his expeditions. He said it contains the secrets of several laws, both major and cosmic. After studying and contemplating it for some time, he gained some enlightenment in his main law. But after that, he couldn’t understand anything else from it." Director Lance shook his head.
"He later showed it to the other senior members of the Empire. Every one of them gained a certain amount of enlightenment in their own main law, and after that, they couldn’t sense anything else."
"They all said that once you obtain enlightenment from it, it becomes nothing more than an ordinary scroll. They studied it for thousands of years, yet gained nothing further." Director Lance smiled mockingly as he waved the scroll in his hand.
"And now it’s in my hands. I’ve already taken everything I need from it, so it’s time for it to pass on to the next person."
"Wouldn’t it be enough to simply give him a copy?" Lord Anz looked at the scroll with a trace of desire in his eyes, but eventually suppressed it with a sigh before turning to Lance.
"Isn’t something like this far too precious to simply hand over?"
"Hahaha, listen to who’s talking." Director Lance laughed at Lord Anz before continuing.
"Weren’t you the one who gave him one of our most important techniques just a moment ago?"
"Even if we made a copy of it, it would be useless. The secret lies within the scroll itself, not merely in the words written on it... or perhaps I’m wrong, and the secret lies in both. Either way, keeping it now serves no purpose. Even the enlightenment it grants takes a very long time, and we already possess numerous Immortal scrolls and places rich in laws that provide the same state of enlightenment in nearly half the time." Director Lance smiled confidently as he looked at Rios’s calm face on the screen, then waved his hand, causing the scroll to disappear.
"Besides, my father and the other senior members of the Empire each created a copy of the part they understood from this scroll using their own main laws. That way, the next generation of our Empire will be able to obtain the necessary enlightenment much more easily and in far less time, without having to struggle through all the mysteries and complexities hidden within this scroll." Director Lance tapped the desk several times as he narrowed his eyes.
"But if he truly possesses an Immortal-level talent as you believe... then I’m certain he’ll gain even greater enlightenment from it. That’s why I believe this scroll is the perfect gift for him."
...
On the first floor of the Red Lotus Palace—
After delivering his message to Lord Anz, Rios turned back toward Sally and smiled.
"So, what’s the second technique?"
Hearing the question, Sally smiled, tapped the desk, and another red screen appeared before her. She then sent it floating toward Rios.
"This technique is called Gene Tracing. It’s a technique that belongs to the major law of Blood. While it’s not as rare or as valuable as the Nine Lotus Leaves technique, it’s still one of the finest techniques of its kind in the treasury of the Red Lotus Cosmic Empire."
Rios looked at the technique before him as he listened attentively to Sally’s explanation.
"Gene Tracing is a support-type technique. As you know, Lord Ozir, to comprehend a law, you need one of three things: a suitable bloodline, an environment rich in that law, or an excellent technique. Gene Tracing belongs to the bloodline path." Sally explained with a gentle smile before continuing.
"By using this technique, you’ll be able to trace the laws contained within your bloodline and comprehend them more quickly... Eh!"
Sally had been explaining calmly when she suddenly froze. Her eyes widened in shock as she stared at Rios.
Rios immediately noticed the change in her expression and frowned.
"What is it? Did something happen?"
Ahem! Ahem!
Sally coughed several times before gradually regaining her composure. Avoiding Rios’s gaze in embarrassment, she apologized.
"I’m sorry, Lord Ozir... I made a fool of myself in front of you."
"It’s fine. Don’t worry about it. But did something happen?" Rios raised his left eyebrow curiously.
"N-No, nothing... I mean, yes, something did." Sally shook her head quickly, inwardly wanting to slap herself for her clumsy reaction.
"A-Actually... the Director has sent you some gifts!" she said in a trembling voice, unable to hide the envy in her heart.
"Gifts? What kind of gifts?" Rios frowned suspiciously.
He had accepted the first gift because he assumed it was simply good customer service and an attempt to attract a client with a golden assistant.
But gifts from the Director himself...
That made the whole situation feel rather suspicious.
"The Director has added another 30% discount on top of the original 50%, bringing your total discount to 80%." Sally spoke calmly and steadily, though there was still a faint tremble in her pupils. This was the first time she had ever witnessed something like this.
"In addition, that extra 30% discount will remain active for an entire year, provided your total purchases do not exceed one million Prime."
Sally looked at Rios with a strange expression, her brows knitting slightly as countless thoughts raced through her mind.
Why is he being treated like this? It’s not as if people with golden assistants have never visited the Red Lotus Palace before. They were rare, yes, but they certainly existed. Yet I’ve never heard of any of them receiving this level of preferential treatment...
"Is that all?" The suspicion in Rios’s eyes deepened as he looked at Sally. Something inside him kept telling him this wasn’t everything.
What? Isn’t all of that enough for you?!
Sally was stunned by his response and nearly cursed him inwardly. However, she quickly composed herself and forced a smile onto her face.
"No, Lord Ozir."
She raised both hands, and a worn golden scroll made from some strange kind of hide appeared above them.
"His Excellency the Director has also given you this scroll. He asked me to tell you to take good care of it, and if you have the time... he hopes you’ll study it. He believes you’ll benefit greatly from it."
