Chapter 61: The Greatest Mutation

"But what makes me certain he didn’t spend more than one hundred million Prime to obtain that golden assistant... is that the golden assistants reserved for those who spend over one hundred million Prime do not have humanoid forms." Lord Anz frowned as he looked at Lily. "To maintain a clear distinction between statuses, and so that the heirs of the Immortal Empires wouldn’t feel slighted by sharing the same rank with people who merely spent over one hundred million Prime to obtain a golden assistant, the administrators of the Eternal Night Heaven established a rule."

"Those who spend more than one hundred million Prime can only receive a golden assistant with a non-humanoid form, and it is available to them for only one century. If they wish to renew it, they must spend another one hundred million Prime." Lord Anz shook his head with a mocking smile while watching the red screen.

"As for the heirs of the Immortal Empires, all forms of golden assistants are available to them, with no time limit unless they are disqualified!" Then he looked at Rios with a trace of excitement.

"But those who possess an Immortal talent or bloodline are different." He pointed at Rios, a glimmer of hope appearing in his eyes.

"No one can obtain an Immortal bloodline simply because one of their parents or ancestors possesses one. It is never inherited through blood. Instead, it is a mutation that occurs within a bloodline—the greatest mutation anyone can ever obtain. No one can interfere with it or manipulate it. And the Eternal Night Heaven has no reason to care whether the heirs of the Immortal Empires feel their status is being matched by someone with humble origins or from some remote planet, because none of that matters before the fact that they carry an Immortal bloodline. In that case, they are worth far more than the vast majority of the heirs of the Immortal Empires." Lord Anz spoke excitedly as he watched Rios.

"But you know very well that those with Immortal bloodlines are literally children of fortune... yet they are also children of misfortune." Director Lance looked at Lord Anz as he explained. "You know their path is filled with endless hardships and disasters. They provoke countless forces and organizations, and even the Immortal Empires are no exception. You could say calamities are always knocking at their doors, and most of them are killed before they ever fully mature. Are you really sure about supporting him?"

"Hahaha, you’re overthinking it, lad." Lord Anz shook his head with a chuckle. "All I offered him was a bit of goodwill. What do a few tens of thousands of Prime matter? Or a technique that’s been gathering dust because it’s too difficult to practice? They’re worthless compared to the grand scheme of the universe’s endless conflicts."

"If that boy grows to his full potential and remembers this favor, then wonderful. But if he falls like most of the others, that would certainly be unfortunate. Still... what does any of that have to do with us?"

Lord Anz turned toward Director Lance and spoke in an advising tone.

"Lance, you’re still in the prime of your youth, and you’ve only been appointed to this position recently. I know you’re full of ambition, just like any young man. But take this as advice from someone who has seen more wonders than you can imagine in this lifetime."

I’m not telling you to give up or belittle yourself. I’m telling you to always remain humble, to understand your own limits. Every one of us has limits that cannot be surpassed, no matter what we do. Learn when to advance and when to retreat. And if an opportunity appears that you cannot truly possess... Lord Anz chuckled as he looked at Director Lance from the corner of his eye. ...then make the best use of it.

"Because that’s exactly what I’m doing now."

Director Lance stared at Lord Anz for a moment, his brows furrowing. In the end, he let out a sigh and turned his eyes back to the screen.

"You’re truly a strange old man. It’s a real shame you were injured during that incident. Otherwise... you would have become an Immortal by now."

"Hahaha, there’s no need to worry about that, lad. Let the past remain in the past. Always stay optimistic and keep looking forward. You never know what the future has in store for you." Faced with Lance bringing up those painful memories, Lord Anz merely laughed as usual, without the slightest trace of regret on his face.

At that very moment, however, Rios suddenly looked straight toward them through the red screen.

"Then I’ll have to thank you properly for this precious gift when the right opportunity presents itself."

"Hahahahaha! See? It seems our little friend knows how to repay kindness when it’s shown to him." Lord Anz laughed happily after hearing Rios’s response and looked toward Director Lance.

Director Lance narrowed his eyes slightly and stared at the desk for a while before finally letting out a sigh. Then he looked at Lord Anz with determined eyes.

"Since you’ve invested in him... why shouldn’t I do the same?"

"Oh? And what are you planning to give him?" Lord Anz raised an eyebrow and began stroking his thin mustache.

"You already gave him a rare technique and a fifty-percent discount on everything he buys today." Director Lance tapped the desk thoughtfully before speaking again. "I’ll give him another thirty-percent discount, bringing today’s total discount to eighty percent. On top of that, my thirty-percent discount will remain valid for one full year, unless his total purchases exceed one million Prime."

"Don’t you think that’s a bit excessive?" Lord Anz asked in surprise at Lance’s sudden decision.

"Weren’t you the one who just said that when an opportunity you can’t possess appears before you... you should make the most of it?" Director Lance smiled challengingly at Lord Anz and raised his hands slightly. "Besides... I’m going to give him this as well."

A projection of an old, worn, dust-covered golden scroll appeared in Director Lance’s hand, causing Lord Anz’s expression to change.

Lord Anz adjusted the single lens of his monocle and carefully examined the scroll.

"What kind of scroll is this?"
