Chapter 655: Chapter 641: Exploration
"Brother, can you have dinner with me at night?" The one speaking was a little girl with a delicate, pinkish face, wearing a white dress with a ponytail, just like a little princess.
Even though the life in Order had changed significantly, it only sufficed for daily sustenance. More nutritious meat and vegetables were not widespread yet, so most children’s faces looked sallow, far from the little girl’s pink, smooth skin.
Clearly, she had an extraordinary backing.
Lu Wei squatted down and patted the girl’s head, showing a rare gentle smile, "I can’t be sure yet, why? Is Yingying a coward, afraid of the dark?"
If members of the Dark Department saw their leader acting this way, they might immediately be astonished, for in their usual impression, the leader, though young, never smiled easily. Instead of using words to express emotions, he was more known for punishment and force.
The Devil’s blood had subtly changed his personality, making him generally ruthless and cold in handling matters!
Not long ago, after he got promoted to the Golden Tier, his presence became even more terrifying, perfectly emanating the aura of the Devil. Other than giving commands in battle, he had no interaction with his subordinates.
However, now, Lu Wei had no trace of the Devil’s aura; instead, he resembled a gentle neighborly brother, with a rare warm smile on his face.
His sister was Lu Wei’s life!
For Lu Wei, one significant reason he chose the Blood Sacrifice was to give his sister a good life, rather than the previous days of constant fear and uncertainty.
In fact, he succeeded. Even though he wasn’t yet twenty, Lu Wei had become a powerful Golden warrior, fortunately gaining Chen Feng’s trust, and commanded one of the strongest departments in Order, the Dark Department!
Now, Lu Wei no longer worried about his sister not having enough to eat or wear, as their lives had undergone a tremendous transformation, turning her into a true princess.
Lu Ying shook her head, then suddenly threw herself into Lu Wei’s arms, whispering softly, "Yingying is not afraid of the dark, it’s just that today is brother’s birthday, and I want to be with you."
"Yingying..."
Lowering his head, Lu Wei glanced at the adorable girl in his embrace. A sliver of sadness flashed in his eyes. Birthday — a now unfamiliar word. Before the apocalypse, on each birthday, his parents would meticulously prepare a table of delicious food for him, a mesmerizing memory, which now had become the source of his pain.
"I’ll try my best."
Lu Wei didn’t dare to make promises, for as the head of the Dark Department, he must set an example. Chen Feng disliked subordinates misusing authority, a lesson Lu Wei knew well.
Perhaps having gone through a real catastrophe, the girl was evidently more sensible, letting out a reluctant "Hmm" from her throat.
She knew that each time her brother said this, it meant that there was a high chance things would be delayed, yet it didn’t affect her affection for him.
"Happy Birthday, Brother!"
...............
The smile on Lu Wei’s face vanished the instant he stepped out of the house. Even though in his heart, he still reminisced the "Happy Birthday" from his sister, warmth remained only within the room. Once outside, his identity was no longer that of a brother but the head of the Dark Department!
He knew well what face he needed to wear whilst working!
......
"My lord... may I know why you called me here?"
In Chen Feng’s room, Lu Wei half-knelt on the ground, waiting for the other’s instructions.
Lu Wei walked in with three other Dark Department members. They had all endured the Blood Sacrifice and through rigorous training had acquired Silver Tier strength.
When the Fallen Angel descended, the Dark Department had lost a few good men, but it was far from devastating. As a department specializing in assassination and reconnaissance, its strong fighters had reached astonishing levels.
"How’s the investigation of Naraku’s whereabouts?" Chen Feng, leaning against the chair back, asked.
Naraku!
The heretic who converted an entire city’s survivors into the Undead and, at the last moment, forcefully turned himself into a Ghost, achieving a twisted form of rebirth.
Chen Feng knew Naraku’s nature and understood he wouldn’t let things go easily. He was lurking nearby, waiting for the right moment to strike back, aiming for a fatal blow.
Lu Wei’s face turned somewhat grim, "Despite my utmost efforts over these times, there’s been no progress. I failed in my duty, and humbly await your punishment!"
Chen Feng waved a dismissive hand — if Naraku were so easily found, he wouldn’t be an Evil God reigning over a region. Sending the Dark Department to investigate was akin to a cat stumbling upon a dead rat. But as it seemed now, Naraku had become far more cautious due to past lessons and wouldn’t reveal himself unless absolutely necessary!
Although Naraku had transformed into a Ghost, losing most of his abilities and lacking divinity to back him up, what good were innumerable schemes if confronted with absolute force? Like fragile ceramics, breaking upon impact.
"Enough. Approach this matter within your means, don’t expend excessive effort. I have other tasks for you."
Upon hearing new orders, Lu Wei straightened his spine, feeling he must seize this opportunity to prove himself after the Naraku incident was botched!
"Quickly send people around to scout, see if there are other forces nearby Order — be they humans or monsters — and describe the circumstances in detail if encountered."
Exploring the surrounding environment?
The territory around Order for several hundreds of miles had already been investigated. This indicated that Chen Feng wasn’t content with nearby explorations and harbored curiosity towards more distant areas.
Though still unsure of Chen Feng’s exact intentions, Lu Wei sensed a grand action was in motion.
Understanding his responsibilities, Lu Wei nodded emphatically before rushing off to organize the manpower. Unquestionably, this was an expedition task beyond the gates of Gulch, requiring ample preparation!
Tat-tat-tat.
Chen Feng’s fingers gently tapped on the armchair. In the previous life, Order was akin to a small landowner — struggling to manage its tiny domain, let alone wasting efforts exploring surroundings.
But things are different now; unified and seamlessly operating, Order had fuelled an idea in Chen Feng’s mind — aside from Order, did other large human settlements exist within a thousand miles, or had new life forms emerged due to a dimensional descent?
