Chapter 148: Training

Drekar was an interesting guy.

Faust summoned him the day after they moved into Compound Wave during his first visit to one of the training floors. Safe to say it shocked Nirvana and the others—and got him in a bit of trouble with the World Council.

But it was fun freaking them out.

And genuinely, who cared about what the World Council thought?

Drekar himself was interested in their world, reminiscing on the history of his. Both planets had been human seeds, though Drekar’s people had been slightly altered over the years.

After a short discussion on how Servants worked, Faust assigned him to protect his family when they arrived. For now, he was training them in combat.

Servants took commands from their masters as unbreakable laws, even after they died.

Specificity in the words of the command was important, though.

Faust stepped into the training center of Level 18. It was all white, geometric shapes hanging in the air with gaps between them. They moved and pulsed with traps as Players jumped between them, engaged in battle.

This place was meant to push their ability to fight under changing environments.

Smiles shared among the Players were wide and excited; most had forgotten how unwilling they were to come here. Compound Wave was built to serve them and make them feel special, after all.

Any food they wanted for the cheap price of beast cores, delivered to their rooms. Massage sessions that Faust heard had... happy endings. Enjoyment beyond what most had known their whole lives.

The training levels weren’t even as packed as they were meant to be. Most people were lounging in their rooms, enjoying everything the Compound had to offer.

So he found Nirvana, Drekar, and Todd fairly easily. They were the only small group not jumping between the floating platforms of the training center and engaging in flashy battles.

Instead, they worked on their forms, over and over and over again.

Drekar was an interesting guy. His method of training enforced that his students must be in full control of their bodies before they started training techniques.

All seven feet of him were lounged on the floor of the training room, three bags of cheesy snacks in front of him as he lazily called out to Nirvana and Todd.

"You aren’t snapping forward properly. Todd, remember your balance. You are not a newborn calf. Nirvana, strike with intent; stop being so reluctant."

His students glared at him, but Drekar didn’t notice and they followed his instructions to a T.

Thanks to the Spirit attribute, most people could do the moves they envisioned better. When Nirvana and Todd first started Drekar’s strict regimen, he expected they would be training how to throw a punch for a year.

They moved so fragilely and lacked fire in their bodies.

But now he could say they would be done with Drekar’s body control exercises in a week. Magic was really amazing.

Faust, on the other hand, was already very in tune with his body. Drekar immediately began teaching him forms and settled on sparring as their method of training.

The Servant was a much better teacher than him. Faust would have lost patience with Nirvana and Todd on day one.

Drekar perked up as he got close—he had an ability to sense his master’s location. He waved lazily before stuffing his mouth more.

"Take it easy on the snacks," Faust joked. "Your gut has never looked so round."

"They don’t have this... flavor in my world. I quite like it here."

"Umami?" Nirvana asked, rapidly stepping between lines Drekar had cut into the floor. She had been doing this everyday for hours on end. She barely looked down at this point.

Todd looked even more pitiful. He was heaving for breath, slathered in sweat from head to toe. He completed the drills with no fervor, just the fear of Drekar chewing him out.

"No new Essences?" Faust asked him casually.

"I’ve... been... kind of cut off," Todd gasped weakly. "They’re... g-going to a Gate soon... but they didn’t tell me. Only heard from... someone."

Faust had given Todd some advice. His ’friend’ group was in good with William and his cronies. So he should use that to hunt in gates and get lots of rewards.

Gates also had pure essence stones that could be used for powering stuff, but also used by Alchemists to make potions that improved attributes.

Todd had been trading all the Essences he got and his share of pure Essence for Constitution improvement. That was his most important stat for now.

But Todd’s ’friends’—heavy on the quotes—were pissed he wasn’t their little porter anymore and now seemed to be cutting him off.

’Well, my time for Gate runs starts soon.’

The World Council needed Stream points from citizens. They used them to buy items and Essence for their soldiers, and for sponsoring the Knights. If they wanted citizens to invest, they needed to display their strength.

That was one of the reasons they prioritized Knights for organizing Gate battles. But now they were getting to the talented Rank one players that weren’t chosen. His short meeting with the psychiatrist allowed him to read some things.

They were making sure Faust was trustworthy for a battle.

The number of gates was also getting a bit ridiculous. More and more people were being distributed.

If Todd was getting iced out by his ’friends,’ then Faust would help him out.

"We’ll get a Gate to take down soon," Faust mumbled as he walked over to Drekar and kicked him. "Get up, uncle. It’s my turn to train."

Drekar sighed weakly. "Your training is taking so long. I have some episodes of this interesting medical show to get back to."

Faust didn’t want to force him since, as a Servant, Drekar had to follow his every order, but Faust was pretty invested in learning more.

"How about you train with me instead?" Nirvana said suddenly.

Faust turned back slightly, noticing how fidgety she was and how Todd turned away quickly. He glanced at Drekar, but the ancient assassin didn’t show any signs of anything.

’What are they planning?’
