Chapter 222: 223 | Because You’re Not the Villain

Nolan didn’t move. The golden shimmer around him intensified slightly. A warning or a reflex. Hard to tell with light manipulators.

"You talk like this is a game."

"Everything’s a game." I stopped three meters from him. Close enough to see the tension in his jaw. Far enough to react if he decided to stop talking. "The only question is whether you know the rules."

"And you do?"

"I’m learning."

We stood like that for a long moment. Two students in an empty arena with too much history and not enough understanding between us. He was trying to figure me out. I could see it in the way his eyes tracked my movements. The way he kept his weight balanced. Ready.

He wouldn’t find what he was looking for.

The Rome he knew was gone. Replaced by something that wore the same face but operated on entirely different principles.

"Aurora talked to me this morning."

The words landed like a punch to the gut. I didn’t let it show.

"Did she."

"She said things were complicated. That she needed time to figure some things out." His voice stayed level. Too level. The kind of control that cost something to maintain. "She wouldn’t tell me what changed."

"Maybe you should ask her."

"I’m asking you."

I could have lied. Fed him some story about academic pressure or family drama or the general stress of hero training. He might even have believed it. The original Rome had been a good enough liar to fool most people most of the time.

But I wasn’t the original Rome.

And lying to Nolan about Aurora felt wrong in a way I couldn’t quite articulate.

"She kissed me." I watched his face. Watched the micro-expressions shift. Surprise. Confusion. The first flickering edge of anger. "About a week ago. In the hallway outside the training center. I didn’t initiate it. But I didn’t stop it either."

The shimmer around him brightened. The air grew warmer. Not enough to burn. Just enough to make a point.

"You’re telling me this why?"

"Because you deserve to know." I kept my voice steady. "And because she’s going to tell you herself eventually. Better you hear it from me first so you have time to process before that conversation happens."

"Process." He laughed. It wasn’t a nice sound. "You want me to process the fact that you kissed my girlfriend."

"She kissed me. And she’s not your girlfriend anymore. Not really." I held up a hand before he could interrupt. "That’s not me being an asshole. That’s me telling you what she told me. Things changed between you two before I was ever involved. I just happened to be standing there when she finally admitted it to herself."

Nolan’s hands clenched at his sides. Light gathered around his fists. Dangerous. Beautiful. The kind of raw power that made him the protagonist of a story I’d accidentally hijacked.

"You think you can just take whatever you want."

"No." I shook my head. "I think people make their own choices. Aurora chose to kiss me. Aurora chose to tell me the truth about what she’s been feeling. Aurora is choosing right now how she wants to handle this situation. None of that is about me taking anything. It’s about her finally letting herself want something different."

"Something different." His voice dropped. Quiet. Controlled. More dangerous than if he’d been shouting. "Meaning you."

"Maybe. Maybe not. She hasn’t decided yet." I rolled my shoulders. Trying to release some of the tension building in my own body. "But if she does choose me, it won’t be because I manipulated her or lied to her or stole her from you. It’ll be because that’s what she wants. And you’re going to have to accept that."

"Or what?"

"Or nothing." I met his eyes. Golden light against whatever cold darkness lived behind mine. "I’m not threatening you, Nolan. I’m not playing games with her feelings or yours. I’m just telling you the truth because I think you deserve better than finding out some other way."

The light around him flickered. Dimmed. His hands unclenched slowly.

"Why."

"Why what?"

"Why do you care whether I find out some other way." He stepped closer. Close enough that I could feel the residual warmth from his ability. "You don’t like me. I don’t like you. We’ve been circling each other like wolves since the semester started. So why bother being honest now?"

Good question.

The easy answer was that Aurora would want it this way. That she’d been carrying the weight of a secret relationship for four months and deserved to have at least one conversation happen cleanly.

The harder answer was that I’d spent too long watching Nolan be the hero of someone else’s story. Watching him succeed where the original Rome failed. Watching him embody everything a protagonist was supposed to be while I scraped together borrowed power and complicated relationships and a countdown that ticked toward permanent death.

He wasn’t my enemy.

He was just the guy standing in a position I needed to occupy if I wanted to survive.

"Because you’re not the villain." I said it simply. Without heat. "Neither am I, honestly. We’re just two people trying to figure out how to be heroes in a world that keeps changing the rules. And heroes don’t deserve to get blindsided by the people they’re supposed to trust."

Something shifted in his expression. The anger didn’t disappear. But it made room for something else.

Confusion, maybe.

Or recognition.

"You’re different than I thought."

"I get that a lot."

"No." He shook his head. "I mean actually different. The Rome I knew would have used this as leverage. Would have found some way to twist the situation to his advantage. Made me look like the bad guy. Made himself look like the victim."

"The Rome you knew made a lot of mistakes."

"And you don’t?"

I laughed. Genuine. Tired.

"I make plenty of mistakes. I just try to make different ones than he did."
