Chapter 124: Total Spatial Inversion
The sound of shattering stone should have been the end of it. But that wasn’t the case.
Creeeeak.
"What the hell?!" Jisu screamed, her voice cracking with pure panic. She stumbled backward, her heavy, red-armored gauntlet trembling as she pointed toward the pillar she had just smashed a guardian into. "I broke its jaw! I literally shattered its entire upper torso!"
I snapped my head around.
The pieces of broken rock on the floor were vibrating. It wasn’t a normal tremor. The stones were rolling toward each other, clicking and snapping together like magnetic blocks. The crimson circuits running through the rubble flared with a sudden, blinding intensity, acting like veins that pulled the shattered limbs back into place.
Within three seconds, the guardian stood completely whole again. Its ruby eyes locked right back onto Jisu.
"They’re getting back together!" Grog roared. He swung his massive broadsword downward, cleaving a reforming arm in half, but the rock simply fused back together around his blade. "My sword is getting stuck! Kid, what solution do you have for this?!"
"Agis! Jisu! Fall back!" I called out, my mind frantically racing through the fragments of the research articles I had skimmed.
’Think, Woo Jin. Think.’
The legendary S-Rank Hunter’s journal. What did it say about the ancient castle defenses? He wrote about a specific focal point. A structural anchor that kept the autonomous units tied to the Gate’s ambient mana.
My eyes darted across the reforming bodies of the thirty guardians.
There.
Right in the center of their chests, hidden deep beneath the thick layers of interlocking stone plates, a faint, pulsing light was throbbing. It wasn’t the regular thin lines of the crimson circuits. It was a concentrated, marble-sized sphere of pure, glowing energy.
"The core!" I shouted. "Don’t just hit their limbs! There is a crimson shining core inside their chest! You have to pierce the center, or they will keep regenerating forever!"
"Easier said than done!" Jisu hissed.
....
The battle transformed from a standard defense into a grueling war of attrition.
Knowing the weak point didn’t magically make the stone any softer. The guardians were fast, heavy, and entirely immune to pain. Every single strike required an immense amount of physical force just to crack the outer shell before aiming for the tiny core inside.
Whack!
A massive stone fist cut through the air, catching Seok right in the shoulder.
The impact was brutal. Even with his defensive mana active, the weight of the punch sent him skidding five meters across the cobblestones. His cartoonish mask tore slightly at the side, and a thick stream of blood began to leak from the corner of his lips, dripping down his chin.
"Agis!" Hana screamed.
"I’m fine!" Seok grunted, his voice tight with pain. He didn’t even wipe the blood away.
He instantly stabilized his footing, gripping his spear with both hands. He lunged forward and drove the tip of his weapon straight through the crack Grog had previously left on a guardian’s torso.
CRACK!
The blue spear pierced the glowing marble. The stone guardian went completely rigid, the crimson circuits fading into a dull gray before its entire body dissolved into a pile of dust.
"That’s one!" Seok panted, his chest heaving violently as he wiped the blood from his mouth with the back of his sleeve.
On the right side, Jisu was in no better shape. Her red-colored armor was covered in deep scratches, and the aura on her rings was flickering dangerously. She was panting heavily, her shoulders slumped from pure exhaustion. Every time she threw a punch, a sharp gasp escaped her throat.
"There’s... too many of them," Jisu gasped, dodging a sweeping claw by an inch.
Grog let out a wild, feral roar to draw the attention away from her.
"Get behind me, lady!" the mountain of a man rumbled.
He gripped his heavy broadsword, channeling every last drop of his remaining strength into the blade. The metal began to hum with a dull, brown earthy aura. With a massive vertical swing, he slammed the sword into the ground, creating a localized shockwave that shattered the legs of three oncoming guardians, pinning them to the floor.
"Hana! Now!" Grog yelled.
Hana was pale. Her knuckles were completely white around her staff, and her lips were trembling. She was barely casting her spells at this point since her magical energy had been drained to the absolute limit.
"Frost... Burst!" she screamed, pouring the last remnants of her mana into the pinned statues. The ice cracked their chests open, exposing the shining cores.
Jisu immediately lunged forward, smashing her armored fists into the glowing marbles and shattering them into pieces.
Cough! Cough!
A sharp, painful cough erupted from my throat, making my vision blur for a fraction of a second. The dust in the hall combined with my lingering flu was a total nightmare.
"Woo Jin," Vera’s voice was instantly there, her hand firmly pressing against my back to steady me. "Don’t push yourself. I can handle the rest."
"I know," I muttered beneath my bag, blinking away the fatigue.
Right in front of us, the final five stone guardians converged. They realized their numbers were dropping, and their ruby eyes flared with an ominous light as they raised their heavy claws to crush us.
However, before they could do anything, a shadow casually drifted past me.
It was Black.
The mercenary hadn’t said a single word for the last ten minutes. His hands were still calmly buried deep inside the pockets.
BOOM!
He didn’t even lift his hands. He simply took a single step forward, and the gravitational force around his body expanded like a violent, expanding bubble.
The air pressure inside the hall didn’t just drop—it completely shattered.
The remaining five guardians didn’t even have the chance to swing their claws. The moment they entered that invisible three-meter radius around Black, the immense weight of his gravity field slammed into their heads.
CRASH! CRASH! CRASH!
It was a terrifying display of raw, overwhelming power. The gravity didn’t just flatten them; it compressed their massive stone bodies with such force that it directly crushed the crimson shining cores inside their chests.
The statues didn’t regenerate. They didn’t even turn into dust. They were instantly pulverized into a fine, gray sand that scattered across the floor.
Black stopped walking, his dark mask tilting slightly over his shoulder toward me.
"All done," Black murmured, his deep voice entirely smooth, without a single hint of exhaustion or heavy breathing. "You owe me a new pair of boots, Brian. This dust is terrible."
"Is it... over?" Hana whispered, her staff clattering softly against the stone floor as she collapsed onto her knees from exhaustion.
Jisu deactivated her red armor, her shoulders slumping as she let out a long, relieved sigh. "They aren’t getting back up. The mana signatures are completely dead. We actually survived."
"Good job, everyone," Seok said, his voice steady despite the blood still dripping from his chin.
The team was celebrating. They thought the worst was behind them.
But...
’Why can’t I shake off the feeling that these weren’t the things which I should be worried about?’
My eyes narrowed behind the cutouts of my paper bag mask as I stared at the quiet, dark hall. The pillars were still burning with faint fires, casting long, dancing shadows across the floor.
’Why do I feel like there is another anomaly? And these things were just the beginning of that?’
Think about it. The Vampire Kingdom was a C-Rank Gate in the original novel. We had already dealt with the C-Rank enemies. We had even cleared an ’A-’ Rank Duke thanks to Carmilla.
But what about the anomaly? The specific variable that made this dungeon an absolute graveyard for standard Hunter teams? And even the protagonist?
My gaze drifted toward the center of the hall.
The stone bed was still there. And lying on top of it was the motionless figure of the Vampire Lord. He was draped in ancient, tattered black robes, his face pale and completely frozen in a deathly slumber.
His hands were crossed over his chest. And clamped tightly within his cold, dead fingers was a massive, crystalline object shaped exactly like a human heart. The object wasn’t glowing, but it possessed a strange, dark texture that seemed to absorb the ambient light around it.
"Well, if the boss is asleep, that means the core is right there for the taking," Grog’s deep voice broke through my thoughts.
I snapped out of my contemplation.
Grog was already walking. He had bypassed Seok and Jisu while they were resting, his heavy boots making loud, careless clicking sounds against the stone floor as he approached the stone bed. His eyes were wide, fixed entirely on the crystalline heart in the Lord’s hands.
"Hey, kid," Grog called out over his shoulder, a greedy smirk forming on his face. "This thing looks like it’s worth more than the money you used to hire us. I’m just gonna grab it so we can pack up and leave this creepy place."
He reached his massive, calloused hand outward.
In that exact fraction of a second, the missing piece of the novel’s text, which I didn’t remember before, flashed straight into my mind.
’The Silver Knight.’
The dead human in shining silver armor we had passed at the entrance. He wasn’t from a different story. He was a visual warning left by the dungeon’s true mechanism. The Vampire Lord wasn’t the final boss of this Gate.
He was the seal.
The crystalline heart wasn’t a core. It was a catalyst designed to trigger a total spatial inversion if touched by a living pulse.
"No!!! Don’t touch it!" I screamed, my voice cracking with terror of the unknown.
But I was too late.
Grog’s fingers had already closed tightly around the surface of the stone heart.
The moment his skin made contact with the crystal, the world completely stopped.
Thump.
A single, massive heartbeat echoed through the entire castle. It didn’t come from Grog, and it didn’t come from the sleeping Lord. It came from the stone heart itself.
The dark crystal instantly shattered into a thousand tiny, black needles that drove themselves straight into Grog’s hand. He didn’t even have the chance to scream. Within a second, the blackness crawled up his veins, turning his entire arm completely dark before spreading to his chest.
"Brian—!" Seok shouted, stepping forward.
The fires on the pillars turned from bright orange to a sickly, suffocating purple. The high gothic ceiling cracked open, and instead of the bloated red moon, an endless, swirling vortex of absolute pitch-black energy poured down into the hall.
[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]
[CRITICAL WARNING: The Seal of the Stagnant Era has been shattered.]
[The Gate is undergoing a Total Spatial Inversion.]
[Danger Rating: Unquantifiable (???)]
The air pressure didn’t just collapse; it became an absolute vacuum.
"Woo Jin!" Viora screamed, her grip on my arm tightening with desperate force as the violent wind tried to tear us apart.
I tried to plant my feet, to pull my dagger, to calculate a single variable that could save us, but my mind was completely blank. The sheer density of the dark mana flooding the room was enough to paralyze my nervous system entirely.
Black’s gravity field exploded in a desperate attempt to counter the vortex, but the black energy simply swallowed his gravity whole, shattering the space around him.
The dark vortex expanded violently, a massive wave of absolute blackness erupting from the stone bed and consuming the pillars, the floor, and every single one of us in a fraction of a second.
BOOM!
The sound was deafening, yet entirely silent at the same time.
My fingers slipped away from Viora’s grip. The last thing I felt was the freezing cold air hitting my face, and then...
Everything went completely dark.
