Chapter 122: Vampire League

Soon, after walking for more than half an hour, we were able to reach the doors of the castle standing atop the hill. Surprisingly, all the other vampires didn’t even try to get closer to us, perhaps, it was all thanks to Carmilla.

"So, this is the place where the final boss is?" Grog scoffed as he lifted his broadsword from his shoulder and placed its tip on the ground.

"No. It isn’t." After catching a glimpse of what he said, I replied.

"This isn’t?" Hana and Jisu let out at the same time.

’Yeah, this isn’t,’ I thought.

Theoretically speaking, this was the place where the Vampire Lord was, but at the same time, this was also the place where he wasn’t.

It is kind of confusing. When I had first read this part in the novel, I also couldn’t understand a thing, to the point that I had to reread this whole arc over and over again about fifteen times.

I had knowledge from the story, but it wasn’t completely omniscient since I only remembered parts of it. That was why I had read the articles about vampires to understand them more deeply.

The only thing I remember clearly is that there was an anomaly. But what kind? I don’t remember.

That is why I have to be cautious about everything and make sure that Vera isn’t in extreme danger.

I walked forward and slowly tapped my hand against the surface of the massive gate. However, before opening it, I glanced back at the silent Carmilla.

I just hope the anomaly won’t be that big of a deal. Otherwise, some of us may even lose our lives.

"Let’s go," I said, and using all the strength in my body, I pushed open the gate.

Creak~

Since it was such a massive gate, I only opened it just enough for us to pass through and step inside.

"This is..." Hana muttered under her breath as her gaze swept through the surroundings.

In front of us wasn’t anything like the scenes we had left behind. This place was dark, yes, but there was something that was completely out of place for a Vampire Kingdom.

A dark human clad in shining silver armor was kneeling on the ground, his hand resting on the sword planted in front of him.

He had an arrow embedded in his leg, and a sword was driven through his chest. Moreover, one of his arms had been severed from his body and was lying on the ground.

’No... it couldn’t be.

The Silver Knight.

The protagonist of another story?

He wasn’t supposed to be here.’

We slowly walked past him. However, my gaze lingered on his face for a while longer because he wasn’t just any victim; he was a man who had his own story to tell.

Step.

Step.

Step.

We kept walking, walking, and walking. But we were never able to reach the other side of the castle.

"How long do we have to walk? There seems to be no end to it," Grog said. He looked really tired—not physically, but mentally.

Hana and Jisu were just like him. But Black, Seok, and Carmilla kept walking without a word or any hesitation in their steps.

The farther we went, the darker the place became. So, to help us see, Hana raised her staff and lit its orb with a blue light that brightened the surroundings.

After all that walking, we were finally able to reach a place where fires attached to the pillars illuminated the area.

And in the middle of it was a figure lying on a structure made of stone.

"Stop." I raised my hand, gesturing for everyone to stop.

I don’t know if they had faith in me or what, but all of them stopped instantly, including Black and Carmilla.

"W-what is it?" Hana stammered.

"I think this is the place," I said.

"The place where the final boss is?" Grog asked, and I nodded slightly without looking back.

My gaze was fixed on the dark statues of different vampires placed all around the man lying on the stone platform.

There has to be some variable. I can’t be wrong. But what is it? Is it those statues? The lying Vampire Lord? Or the burning fires atop the pillars? What is it?

Everyone was looking at me while I was trying to analyze the variable that I knew was there but couldn’t actually remember.

They were slowly losing their patience and began to speak up.

"If it is that man lying on the stone bed, then why are we waiting?" Jisu asked as she clenched her fist, and her red ring began to transform into red-colored armor.

"Yeah, shouldn’t we just go and do what we came here to do?" Grog added as he also raised his weapon.

They were about to take a step forward and do what they thought was the best option, but both were stopped by Black and Seok.

"If I were you, I wouldn’t dare move before that guy says so," Black began to speak up. "That guy’s fashion sense may be a disaster, but he always has his reasons for doing this kind of stuff. I suggest you don’t go ahead and make a mistake which will cost us our lives."

"Yeah, he’s right. Wait for Brian to analyze the place first," Seok also added and raised his hand in front of the two hasty Hunters.

While they were having their conversation, I was thinking about every possible variable that could appear here. But no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t pinpoint what it exactly was.

"We’re going to move," I said. "But remember, one step at a time. I don’t want to wake the Vampire Lord."

I began moving forward toward the stone bed, very slowly and cautiously.

I can’t afford to wake him up. It wouldn’t even take him a single breath to wipe us all out. He is just way too damn strong. I just hope he is dead and gone.

But even though I was being so cautious, the stone figures surrounding the Lord noticed us and slowly turned their heads toward us.

One...

Two...

Then every statue inside the hall moved at once.

CRACK!

Stone dust rained onto the floor as dozens of ancient vampire guardians stepped down from their pedestals.

"...Shit."
