Chapter 116: A Plan (2)

’There he is.’

Out from the darkness walked Black.

After stopping five paces away from us, his gaze swept across our matching paper bags.

He didn’t speak for some time. Then, slowly, Black raised his right hand toward his forehead and let out a deeply exhausted sigh.

"Are you seriously doing this right now?" Black’s deep voice carried a mix of absolute disbelief and raw irritation. "Matching masks? I am standing here ready to evaluate whether I need to bury you in a Gate, and you show up looking like a couple of budget supermarket mascots."

Hearing him, I stepped forward and offered him a swift hand gesture. "It’s called professional consistency, Black. Now, are we going to stand here analyzing fashion choices, or are we going to shake hands like proper business partners?"

Black stared at my outstretched hand for three seconds before letting out a short grunt. Then he also stepped forward and gripped my hand. The moment our palms made contact, a heavy pressure settled on my shoulders, but I held my ground with a steady, unflinching grin beneath my brown paper bag.

"You have a lot of confidence for a guy standing in an isolation zone," Black whispered, his grip tightening slightly before he released my hand. "Let’s see how long that confidence lasts once the Gate boundaries lock behind us."

Ring. Ring.

The sudden, loud chime of my phone’s ringtone cut through the dramatic tension like a blunt instrument, which made Black freeze and Viora tilt her head.

I reached into my zippered pants pocket, pulled out the vibrating device, and pressed it to the side of my paper bag mask. "Yeah, hold on a second," I spoke into the receiver, turning away from Black. "Yep. That’s the place. The big rusted warehouse with the broken crane. Just walk straight into the center courtyard. We’re waiting."

I clicked the phone shut and slid it back into my pocket, turning my face back toward him.

"What did you do?" Black’s voice dropped into a chilling, murderous tone. The gravity field around him expanded violently, cracking the concrete tiles beneath his boots. "If you brought the Association here, Woo Jin, I will—"

"Relax, Adrian," I said, using his real name deliberately to snap his composure. "I didn’t call the Association. I just thought that it would be much safer if we had a bit of company. It’s basic raid safety."

Before he could process my words, a series of heavy, distinct footsteps echoed from the darkened alleyway leading into the courtyard.

Out from the shadows stepped four individuals, their mana signatures radiating an immense, suffocating density that immediately began to clash with Black’s gravity field.

These weren’t regular Association rookies. These were veteran anomalies—high-ranked independent Hunters from the older generation whom Viora had known during her prime. I had spent the last day asking her about them, selecting a few powerful, eccentric individuals who were more than happy to show up for a mysterious independent Gate raid after I offered them an unimaginable amount of money.

The first man, a towering figure with a massive scarred face and a heavy broadsword strapped to his back, stepped into the light and looked around the courtyard with a booming laugh. "Well, well! The coordinates were real! I haven’t felt spatial pressure this thick since the old raids!"

Beside him, a slender woman with long silver hair and a set of intricate magical rings humming on her fingers gave a polite, elegant nod. "It seems we aren’t the only ones invited to this little gathering."

Black’s faceless black mask turned toward the group. His entire frame went completely rigid, and his hands clenched into tight fists.

He had wanted a private, isolated corner to execute me, but now he was standing in the middle of a literal roundtable of A- and B-Rank Hunters. He couldn’t drop a single gravity blade without triggering a massive, multi-directional clash.

"You... you absolute lunatic," Black hissed toward me, his voice trembling with a mixture of shock and pure rage. "You pulled these names out of the past? How do you even know who they are?"

"I have an excellent research department," I replied smoothly, gesturing toward Viora, who gave a cheerful, mock wave with her right hand.

But I wasn’t done yet.

"Oh, look," I murmured, pointing a finger toward the main entrance gate. "The final guest has finally arrived. He was a bit hesitant when I first called him, but it seems he just couldn’t resist paying his debt back."

A heavy, deliberate splash echoed from the entrance.

Walking slowly through the puddles was a young man in his early twenties. As he walked, he adjusted his glasses behind the cutouts of his mask, but it wasn’t a standard paper bag.

It was a brightly colored, insulated plastic lunch bag with a cartoon character printed on the front, looking incredibly out of place.

In his right hand, he firmly gripped a brilliant blue spear that was completely devoid of aura but radiated a heavy, dense physical force.

It was Seok.

Even though I had rejected his official follow-up requests after the raid, he had still saved his personal number in my phone.

And when I called him yesterday, mentioning that a certain Gate near the Northern Fractures required a standard safety audit from a qualified supervisor, his analytical mind had immediately picked up on the hidden implication.

Seok stopped at the edge of the courtyard, his blue spear resting lightly against his shoulder as his eyes locked onto Black’s dark gray coat, then over to my torn paper bag.

"Am I late for the raid, Brian?" Seok asked, his voice completely calm and steady as he adjusted the weight of his spear.

Black looked like his brain had completely short-circuited. He stood there at the center of the courtyard, surrounded by four elite high-ranking veterans, a spear-wielding Hunter in a lunch bag, and Viora and me.

Slowly, he raised his left hand, pressing his palm flat against his forehead beneath his black mask as if a sudden, massive migraine had just erupted behind his eyes.

"Another lunch bag," Black muttered, his voice sounding drained of its terrifying momentum as he stared at Seok’s head. "I cannot believe this is my life right now."

I stepped right beside him, leaning closer until my brown paper bag was practically touching his shoulder, and let out a soft, smug chuckle that only he could hear.

"The board is balanced, Adrian," I whispered into the cold wind. "Now, shall we go clear a Gate together like the good friends your daughter thinks we are?"
