Chapter 114: A Bad Dream
—Viora’s POV—
The blue twilight eventually faded into a heavy, ink-black night. Inside the villa, the gentle hum of the kettle was the only sound breaking the silence.
Woo Jin stood over the stove, carefully stirring the violet liquid as the dark purple leaves dissolved completely. True to his word, he dropped three extra spoonfuls of sugar into the second mug before carrying the tray back out to the living room.
Viora was exactly where he had left her, curled up on the edge of the couch with her chin resting on her knees.
"Here," Woo Jin said, setting the tray down on the coffee table. He picked up the heavily sweetened mug and guided it gently into her hands. "Drink it while it’s hot. Your forehead felt like a furnace out on the pier."
Viora took the mug as her fingers wrapped around the warm ceramic. She took a slow sip and a small, satisfied hum escaped her throat when the burst of sweetness masked the bitter undertone of the magical herbs.
"You put a lot of sugar this time," she murmured and her lips curled into a soft smile.
"Because I didn’t want to hear you complain about the taste while you have a relapse," Woo Jin also sat down on the adjacent sofa and took a sip from his own bitter mug.
The warmth of the liquid instantly began to soothe the lingering soreness in his chest, calming the small coughs that had been bothering him all afternoon.
For a long while, neither of them spoke. They simply sat in the quiet room, letting the ambient warmth of the villa and the medicinal properties of the purple leaves stabilize their erratic body temperatures.
By the time the mugs were empty, the clock in the hallway struck 9:00 PM.
Then, suddenly, Viora’s head turned sharply toward the front door. A second later, a familiar, steady heartbeat echoed from the outer walkway, followed by the sound of the front door unlocking.
Click.
The door swung open, and the cold night breeze swept into the hallway.
"Woo Jin? Are you guys still awake?"
A mature, gentle voice echoed through the house. It was Elena. She walked into the living room, shaking the remaining droplets of rain from her umbrella before setting it aside in the corner.
Her face looked somewhat tired from long days of dealing with Hunter Association.
"You are back, Auntie," Woo Jin spoke up. "How was the work?"
"The usual mess," Elena sighed, running a hand over her tired eyes. "Ever since that S-Rank Gate in China got cleared by Jane and her brother, the Association has been scrambling to reassess the local danger ratings. Also, everyone is talking about some mysterious masked Hunters who practically rewrote the raid manual of a C-Rank Gate. All the higher-ups are losing their minds trying to track them down."
Beneath his calm expression, a faint smirk touched Woo Jin’s lips, but he kept his voice perfectly casual. "Is that so? Sounds like a headache."
"It really is," Elena chuckled, then her gaze drifted toward Viora, noticing the faint pink color still lingering on the tips of the girl’s ears. "Wait a minute... Viora, are you feeling alright? Your cheeks look a bit flushed."
"I am perfectly fine, Aunt Elena," Viora spoke up. "Woo Jin made me some warm herbal tea earlier. The cold air just made me a little tired."
"You two should really be careful. The rainy season flu is no joke this year," Elena said. "Go on up to bed and get some proper rest. Both of you look exhausted."
"Yeah, we were just about to head up," Woo Jin said.
.....
The world was a vast, shifting mixture of echoes, vibrations, and rhythmic thuds. To Viora, darkness was not an empty void; it was a crowded space filled with the tells of the living. She could map an entire room by the way a footstep compressed the wooden floorboards, or tell a person’s exact emotional state by the frantic or steady skipping of their pulse.
As she closed the door of her bedroom behind her, she let out a long breath.
She stripped off her outdoor clothes and slid beneath the heavy fabric of her blanket after wearing something more comfortable. The bed was comfortable, and the lingering warmth of the magical herbs had finally forced her burning throat to relax.
’Woo Jin.’
Her thoughts drifted back to the wooden pier, where the scent of the deep pond had mixed with the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. When he had gripped her hand and told her that she wasn’t his weakness, but his absolute resolve, her chest had tightened so fiercely it felt like something she had never felt before.
’He belongs to me,’ she thought to herself as her fingers closed tightly around the edge of the blanket. ’He said he would tear the world apart to keep me from bleeding. I won’t let anyone touch him. Not Black. Not the Association. No one.’
With his heartbeat echoing faintly through the solid walls of the room, Viora finally let her tense guard down. Her breathing synchronized with the distant thuds of his pulse, and she slowly drifted off into a deep, heavy slumber.
But the darkness of sleep did not bring peace.
Instead, the warmth of the room dissolved into a freezing, crushing weight.
In her dream, Viora found herself standing back inside the sapphire palace hall.
SPLASH!
A violent wave of water slammed into her chest, forcing her backward.
"Woo Jin!" she tried to scream, but the water rushed into her throat and made her unable to speak.
Through the fluid, she finally caught a single, erratic pulse. It was weak. Faltering. Bleeding. She forced her legs to move, lunging toward the sound as her hands clawed through the water desperately.
Then, a massive, dark silhouette manifested out of the shadows. It wasn’t Trion. It was a shifting, faceless entity radiating a heavy, crushing force that flattened the ground beneath her feet. The entity raised a sharp, black blade.
Right underneath the blade, strapped to a broken marble pillar, was Woo Jin.
His paper bag mask was torn into shreds, and his blue eyes were wide, staring directly at her. Blood—thick, crimson, and terrifyingly real—was erupting from his chest, clouding the blue water until everything turned red.
"Die knowing that your weakness killed you both," a deep, distorted voice roared.
The black blade came down.
NO!
Viora’s eyes snapped open.
"Hah... uh!"
She shot upright in her bed and her chest was heaving violently as she gasped for air. Her entire body was trembling, and cold sweat was pouring down her neck, soaking the collar of her pajamas.
Thump-thump!
Thump-thump!
Thump-thump!
The noise inside her own ears was deafening. She reached up with a shaking hand, pressing her palms against her temples to try and stop the spinning sensation in her head.
The nightmare had felt so incredibly real. The scent of blood, the crushing weight of the pressure, and worst of all—the sudden, terrifying silence when his heartbeat had stopped completely.
"Woo Jin..." she gasped out.
She needed to hear it. She needed to verify that he was still breathing, that the nightmare was just a trick of her feverish mind.
Slowly, she swung her legs over the edge of the bed. Her bare feet touched the cold floor, and the sudden temperature change made her dizzy head throb with a dull, agonizing pain.
Because she was completely blind, navigating a room in the middle of a panic attack was an exercise in pure willpower. Without her usual calm focus, the echoes of the house were distorted by the loud rushing of blood in her ears.
She extended her trembling right hand and tried to use her fingers to trace the edge of the nightstand.
Step.
She took a hesitant step forward. Her knee lightly brushed against the corner of a wooden chair, and she instantly recoiled, her breath catching in her throat. Her balance was entirely off. The lingering effects of the flu, combined with the raw terror of the dream, made the floor feel like it was shifting beneath her weight.
She slid her hand along the smooth, painted surface of the wall, moving inch by inch toward the doorway. Every small creak of the floorboards felt magnified a hundred times, echoing through her mind like explosions.
’Where is he? Why can’t I hear him?’
She paused, straining her ears, and forced her frantic mind to calm down for just a second.
...Thump... ...Thump...
There it was.
A wave of relief washed through her, but it wasn’t enough. The image of the black blade cutting through his chest was still burned into her mind. She needed to touch him. She needed to feel the physical warmth of his skin to completely erase the lingering horror of the nightmare.
Gently, her fingers wrapped around her doorknob. She turned it with absolute care, ensuring the metal latch didn’t make a single sound to alert Elena or Woo Jin.
The door creaked open a fraction of an inch, and Viora slipped out into the hallway.
After a few steps, her outstretched hand finally made contact with the cold brass handle of Woo Jin’s bedroom door.
Her heart skipped a beat as she pushed the door open, stepping silently into his room.
Then, Viora closed the door behind her, and guided her footsteps toward the side of the bed. Reaching there, her hand lightly swept across the fabric of the duvet until her fingers brushed against the sleeve of his shirt.
Woo Jin was sleeping on his side, his breathing slow and perfectly deep.
Without saying a word, and without a single shred of hesitation, Viora climbed onto the mattress. She slid beneath the blanket until she was pressed directly against his back.
She wrapped her left arm tightly around his waist, burying her face between his shoulder blades. The intense, burning heat radiating from his body instantly began to melt the freezing dread inside her heart.
Thump-thump.
Thump-thump.
Sitting this close, his heartbeat wasn’t an echo anymore. It was a physical vibration passing directly from his chest into her own body. It was loud, steady, and completely unbroken.
"You’re alive," she whispered so softly the words barely left her lips.
Woo Jin stirred slightly, the sudden weight and the familiar scent of flower perfume breaking through his deep sleep. His muscles tensed for a fraction of a second before relaxing completely as he recognized her touch.
"Viora?" his deep, groggy voice cut through the dark room. He started to turn his head over his shoulder to look at her. "What’s wrong? Is the fever back?"
"Don’t move," she murmured, her grip on his waist tightening even further as she pressed her forehead firmly against his back. "Just stay like this. Don’t turn around."
Woo Jin didn’t argue. He slowly reached down with his right hand, and wrapped his fingers over hers where they were clutched against his stomach.
"Bad dream?" he asked softly.
"A very stupid dream," she whispered back. "I don’t want to talk about it."
"Okay," Woo Jin responded and went quiet.
Inside his room, the ticking clock and the steady thudding of his heart merged into a perfect lullaby. Safe within his walls, and with her hand locked firmly in his, Viora finally closed her eyes, letting herself sink back into a peaceful, but dreamless sleep.
