Chapter 172: Tears Of The Dead
The pale dawn crept slowly through the frosted arched windows of the Imperial bedchamber.
Kai stood by the thick glass, looking down at the sprawling, silent metropolis of Helios.
The heavy snow continued to fall, burying the ancient golden spires under a pristine, unyielding blanket of white.
Yena slept peacefully, tangled in the luxurious silk sheets, her dark hair fanned out across the pillows.
A translucent blue system prompt blinked patiently in the far corner of his vision.

[Warning: Continental Leylines detect severe foreign spatial breaches]
Kai dismissed the glowing text with a lazy flick of his cold fingers.
Foreign spatial breaches meant visitors from beyond the mortal sky.
He turned away from the massive window, pulling his dark silk robe smoothly over his scarred shoulders.
Yena stirred on the mattress, stretching her toned arms and slowly opening her amber eyes.
"You never seem to sleep anymore," Yena murmured, her voice husky and warm from the night before.
"I have a broken empire to organize," Kai replied, offering her a soft, genuine smile.
He walked over to the bed, leaning down to press a lingering kiss against her bare shoulder.
"Put your armor on, Chief Enforcer."
"The surviving Imperial court is currently waiting in the grand hall."
They descended the winding central stairs together an hour later, the ambient air growing noticeably colder with every single step Kai took.
The ruined throne room had been thoroughly cleared of the shattered solar debris and the frozen chunks of the dead Emperor.
Zara the Unbroken stood near the high dais, her most loyal desert lieutenants flanking her.
She offered a sharp, highly respectful nod as Kai took his seat upon a newly conjured throne of solid, jagged blue ice.
Lieutenant Elian stood nearby, holding a thick, leather-bound ledger of heavy parchment.
"Report," Kai commanded, his deep voice echoing through the vast, freezing hall.
"The Imperial Treasury is highly secure, my King," Zara purred, stepping forward with a proud smirk.
"We found enough refined sun-gold and pristine mana crystals to fund a continent-spanning army for a decade."
"And the outer city defenses?" Kai asked, resting his chin on his cold knuckles.
"My Sand Wyrms hold the main gates," Zara answered.
"The Dawnguard survivors are disarmed and locked securely in the lower barracks."
Yena stood at Kai’s right hand, resting her long ice spear against the frosted floor tiles.
"The high priests of the Sun Temple and the remaining noble patriarchs are waiting outside the brass doors," Yena stated, her tone dripping with seasoned disdain.
"They are actively begging for a royal audience."
"Bring them in," Kai ordered.
The heavy brass doors swung open, revealing a dozen shivering, pale-faced men wearing lavish golden robes.
They walked hesitantly into the freezing throne room, their frantic breath pluming into thick white mist.
The High Priest fell to his knees the moment he saw the Winter King sitting on the frozen throne.
"Mercy, Winter King," the old man wept, pressing his wrinkled forehead against the cold marble.
"We yield the city to your rule."
"We yield the sacred temples to your sovereign frost."
Kai leaned forward, his glowing starlight eyes sweeping over the kneeling, pathetic men.
"You preached to your terrified followers that I was a void-born heretic," Kai noted mildly.
"You told your loyal congregations my frozen soul would melt on the Thousand Golden Steps."
"We were blind," a wealthy, overweight noble stammered, his teeth chattering violently in the freezing air.
"The Sun Emperor deceived us all."
"Meriel is dead," Kai stated smoothly, letting a sharp pulse of zero-degree mana roll across the floor.
"Your false, burning sun has fallen."
"You will strip your lavish temples of all gold and distribute the wealth to the lower civilian rings."
"You will open your massive private granaries to feed my desert soldiers."
"Fail to feed my loyal army, and I will freeze the blood inside your veins before sunset."
The terrified men nodded frantically, offering desperate, shivering oaths of fealty before Kai’s guards dragged them out of the hall.
"They break so easily without their golden god to hide behind," Zara sneered, watching the heavy doors close.
"They are pragmatic survivors," Kai replied, standing up from his icy throne.
"Lieutenant Elian, take me to the Imperial World-Vault."
Elian blinked, his young face paling slightly at the sudden command.
"The World-Vault, my King?" Elian asked nervously, gripping his iron spear tight.
"It is located deep beneath the mountain bedrock, far below the city dungeons."
"Only Emperor Meriel held the divine keys to those ancient, forbidden catacombs."
"I do not need a key," Kai said, touching the hilt of the Void-Star Fang resting at his hip.
He walked past the stunned lieutenant, leading his two fierce commanders deep into the dark bowels of the Sun Spire.
The steep descent took nearly an hour, winding down endless spiral staircases carved from dark, jagged volcanic rock.
The air grew unnaturally heavy, thick with a strange, pulsing energy that felt nothing like standard solar magic.
It felt incredibly old.
It felt like the vast, freezing empty void between the distant stars.
They finally reached a massive, circular iron door covered in complex, glowing red runic seals.
"The Emperor explicitly forbade anyone from approaching this deep sector," Elian whispered, staying several cautious paces back.
"He claimed a great, unspeakable evil slumbered behind this ancient iron."
Kai placed his bare left hand against the cold metal surface.
His freezing mana surged forward, infecting the ancient warning runes and shattering their magical framework in a mere fraction of a second.
The heavy iron door groaned loudly in protest and swung open, revealing a vast, cavernous underground chamber.
In the dead center of the dark room floated a massive, jagged tear in the fabric of reality itself.
It looked like a bleeding, terrible wound in the air, leaking dark purple smoke and projecting a terrifying, crushing gravity field.
"What in the world is that?" Yena breathed out, stepping incredibly close to Kai’s side, her ice spear raised instinctively.
"An Astral Rift," Kai answered softly, his starlight eyes narrowing at the foul magic.
Zara stepped into the cavernous chamber, her amber eyes wide with genuine awe and primal fear.
"The air around it feels terribly heavy," the warlordess muttered, keeping her hand firmly on her curved scimitar.
"It feels like being crushed alive at the bottom of the deep ocean."
"Meriel was actively drawing raw power from this tear," Kai deduced, stepping cautiously closer to the bleeding spatial anomaly.
"He used the continental leylines to siphon volatile energy from the Void to fuel his divine solar constructs."
"He played with dark fire he could not possibly understand."
A sudden, agonizing screech echoed from the foul depths of the purple rift.
The spatial wound rippled violently, stretching much wider as two massive, skeletal hands covered in dark, shifting scales gripped the bleeding edges of the tear.
A horrifying, nightmarish creature began pulling itself forcefully through the rift.
It possessed no real face, only a smooth, featureless plate of dense obsidian bone reflecting the ambient blue light of Kai’s domain.
"Void-Stalker," Kai identified, his deep voice dropping to a highly dangerous rumble.
"Spears up!" Yena roared fiercely, moving quickly to interpose herself between the rift and her sovereign king.
"Stand down," Kai commanded sharply, drawing the Void-Star Fang.
The Mythic dagger hummed with savage, eager anticipation, easily recognizing the foul, delicious energy leaking from the beast.
The Void-Stalker ripped its upper torso through the spatial tear, letting out a high-pitched, vibrating shriek that threatened to violently shatter the eardrums of everyone in the stone room.
It launched itself forward, moving with blinding, unnatural speed directly toward Kai’s chest.
Kai did not flinch or attempt to dodge.
He stepped smoothly into the monster’s chaotic, violent trajectory.
He swung the purple glass blade in a precise, devastating upward arc.
The Void-Star Fang sliced straight through the creature’s dense obsidian armor like thin parchment, cleaving the massive beast cleanly in two.
Thick, black, freezing ichor sprayed wildly across the cavern floor.
The two severed halves of the monster crashed onto the volcanic rock, dissolving rapidly into foul, dissipating purple smoke.

Kai wiped the glass blade clean, staring intently into the rippling spatial tear.
The rift pulsed aggressively, a clear, undeniable sign that more terrifying horrors waited just beyond the thin veil.
"The Emperor broke the ancient seal to fuel his own pathetic vanity," Kai explained coldly, turning back to his stunned, silent commanders.
"Now the Void-Lords know this fragile world is ripe for the taking."
Yena lowered her spear slowly, her amber eyes filled with seasoned, heavy military calculation.
"Can you use your magic to freeze the tear shut?" Yena asked, looking at the purple wound.
"No," Kai answered honestly, tracing the sharp purple edge of his dagger.
"Spatial magic operates on a fundamentally different frequency."
"If I freeze the outer edges, the internal pressure will build until the entire mountain shatters from the inside out."
Zara walked up to stand right beside him, looking bravely into the dark, swirling abyss.
"Then what do we do, Winter King?" Zara asked, her husky voice tight with genuine concern.
"We prepare for a much bigger, much bloodier war," Kai stated, sheathing his glowing weapon.
"Meriel was just a stubborn, arrogant warlord holding a small piece of land."
"The things waiting patiently on the other side of that rift want to consume the world."
Kai turned his back on the bleeding anomaly, walking deliberately toward the iron doors.
"Elian, seal this lower sector immediately."
"Place a permanent, elite guard of fifty Sand Wyrms at the very top of these stairs."
"Yes, my King," the young lieutenant answered sharply, rushing to obey the vital command.
Kai looked at Yena and Zara, his cold, handsome expression promising endless violence and unyielding resistance.
"Draft every able-bodied man from the civilian rings by nightfall."
"Melt down their golden statues and forge heavy iron weapons."
"We are going to turn this shining, decadent capital into an unyielding fortress of ice and steel."
The Winter King had successfully claimed his throne, but the real fight for survival was just beginning.
