Chapter 167: The Weeping Bog

The march continued relentlessly across the frozen stone viaduct.

The massive, floating sky-galleons eventually faded into the gray, snowy distance behind them.

Their burning solar beams remained trapped endlessly within Kai’s floating blue atmospheric singularity.

The thick, suffocating stench of burning sulfur was soon replaced by the heavy, rotting smell of stagnant water.

They had finally reached the treacherous edge of the Weeping Bog.

"This terrible stench is incredibly foul," Zara muttered, wrinkling her sun-bronzed nose in deep disgust.

"It smells like a massive grave left out in the blazing summer heat," Yena agreed, tightening her grip on her spear.

"It is a mass grave," the young Dawnguard lieutenant spoke up from his position in the front ranks.

"Lieutenant Elian, my King," the young man introduced himself quickly, bowing his head respectfully toward Kai.

"Tell me everything about this swamp, Elian," Kai ordered smoothly, his glowing starlight eyes scanning the thick fog.

"The Northern Sun-Priests use this massive bog to silently dispose of heretics and failed legionnaires," Elian explained nervously.

"The thick mud is highly toxic, heavily saturated with dark, decaying solar mana."

"If a man falls into the black water, his flesh melts straight off his bones in mere seconds."

"Then we make sure nobody goes swimming today," Kai replied mildly.

He pushed a steady, pulsing wave of freezing mana directly down into the stone viaduct.

The creeping blue frost expanded aggressively outward from the raised road, turning the bubbling black mud into solid, stable permafrost.

The heavy Southern cavalry moved forward with cautious, highly measured steps across the new ice bridge.

The thick gray fog rolling off the bog limited their visual range to less than fifty yards.

"Something is moving beneath the ice," Yena warned sharply, lowering her ice-tipped spear toward the frozen mud.

"I feel the heavy vibrations right through my horse’s legs," Zara added, instantly drawing both of her curved scimitars.

"Sun-Drowned," Elian whispered, his young voice shaking with genuine, unfiltered terror.

"The dark priests animate the dead, rotting flesh using stagnant solar cores."

"They are mindless, highly aggressive creatures, and they do not feel any physical pain."

A massive, jagged crack violently split the frozen mud on their left flank.

Dozens of decaying, mud-soaked figures erupted forcefully from the frozen bog.

They wore rusted, shattered pieces of old Imperial golden armor.

Their hollow eyes glowed with a sickly, corrupted orange light that pierced the thick fog.

"Form a heavy shield wall!" Yena roared, spinning her ice spear in a wide, highly lethal arc.

The Southern rebel infantry slammed their heavy iron shields together, bracing their boots on the ice for the sudden impact.

The Sun-Drowned crashed into the tight infantry formation with terrifying, unnatural physical strength.

"Do not let their teeth break your skin!" Elian shouted, driving his iron spear straight through a charging ghoul’s chest.

"Their rotting blood burns like volatile acid!"

Zara laughed, a wild, thrilling sound that cut beautifully through the dreary fog.

"Sand Wyrms, ride these corpses down!" Zara commanded her riders.

Her heavy desert cavalry charged off the raised stone viaduct, their iron-shod hooves mercilessly crushing the undead skulls into the frozen mud.

Zara swung her twin scimitars in a beautiful, highly lethal dance, effortlessly severing rotting limbs and decapitating the screaming ghouls.

Kai watched the chaotic, bloody skirmish from atop his black stallion, his expression mildly bored.

"You are holding your power back, my King," Yena noted, impaling two screeching ghouls with a single, powerful thrust of her spear.

"I am patiently waiting for the real threat to finally show itself," Kai answered smoothly.

"These walking corpses are just mindless, pathetic bait."

Suddenly, the dead center of the bog bulged upward with terrifying force.

A colossal, horrifying monstrosity violently breached the surface of the frozen black water.

It was a massive hydra forged purely from rotting human flesh, twisted swamp roots, and heavy, toxic mud.

Three massive, serpentine heads snapped aggressively toward the marching column, dripping highly corrosive black acid from their wooden teeth.

"Abomination," Elian gasped out, stumbling backward onto the slick frost in pure shock.

"The priests sent a legendary Bog-Hydra to break our defensive lines!"

"It is just a very large, terribly ugly weed," Kai smirked darkly.

"Keep the smaller ghouls off my exposed flanks," Kai ordered Zara and Yena without raising his voice.

"I will handle the oversized garden snake."

Kai casually dismounted his warhorse, letting his boots hit the frozen ground.

He walked out onto the cracking, frosted mud of the Weeping Bog with slow, predatory grace.

The central head of the massive Hydra lunged forward, opening a maw filled with jagged, rotting wooden stakes.

Kai did not bother to dodge the massive strike.

He raised his left hand, forming a thick, highly compressed wall of blue ice in a fraction of a second.

The Hydra’s heavy jaws slammed violently into the unyielding ice wall, shattering its wooden teeth upon impact with a sickening crunch.

"Your breath is genuinely terrible," Kai noted, slowly drawing the Void-Star Fang from his hip.

The second head swept around blindly from the right side, aiming to crush him into the thick permafrost.

Kai ducked low, gracefully letting the massive mass of roots and mud sail harmlessly over his dark hair.

He drove his glowing purple dagger directly upward, slicing a deep, highly freezing gash across the beast’s lower jaw.

The gaping wound did not bleed a single drop of acid.

It simply froze solid, the dark solar magic inside the mud decaying rapidly under the supernatural cold of the Mythic blade.

"It regenerates far too fast!" Zara shouted over the din of battle, watching the Hydra’s severed roots rapidly weave back together.

"It only heals if you leave it enough residual warmth to function," Kai replied softly.

He triggered his newly acquired class perk, Glacial Resonance.

He slammed both of his bare hands firmly against the frozen surface of the toxic bog.

"Freeze straight to the bedrock," Kai commanded the ancient swamp.

A blinding, catastrophic shockwave of zero-degree mana ripped violently through the Weeping Bog.

The dark, toxic water underneath the permafrost instantly turned solid.

The massive, twisting roots forming the Hydra’s lower body were forcefully encased in an unyielding, unbreakable block of deep winter ice.

The colossal beast roared in genuine agony as the freezing cold rapidly climbed up its three serpentine necks.

The corrupted orange light in its multiple eyes flickered wildly, desperately fighting against the invading, suffocating frost.

"Shatter," Kai whispered, snapping his cold fingers.

The frozen Bog-Hydra exploded in a deafening, spectacular blast.

Thousands of heavy, frozen mud chunks and shattered, brittle roots rained down across the white battlefield like heavy hail.

The remaining Sun-Drowned ghouls collapsed instantly, the dark magic sustaining their rotting flesh violently severed by the sudden death of the master beast.

Dead silence slowly returned to the cold, foggy swamp.

Kai smoothly sheathed his Mythic dagger, casually brushing a stray speck of frozen mud from his pristine silk sleeve.

"Is everyone still breathing over there?" Kai asked, turning back toward his stunned, silent army.

Yena pulled her spear free from a dead ghoul’s chest, nodding sharply as she checked her squad.

"We lost twelve brave infantrymen to the acid blood," Yena reported, her jaw tight with seasoned military grief.

"Zara’s heavy cavalry suffered no major casualties."

"Twelve men died for my throne today," Kai stated, his glowing eyes scanning the fallen rebels resting on the ice.

"Ensure their grieving families in Sunfall Oasis receive a full royal pension when this brutal war is over."

"Yes, my King," Yena bowed her head respectfully, touched by his pragmatic yet genuine care for his soldiers.

Lieutenant Elian stared at the shattered, icy remains of the colossal Hydra, his young face pale with profound awe.

"You killed a mythic-tier swamp beast in less than two minutes," Elian muttered under his breath.

"You did not even break a sweat doing it."

"I prefer to keep my expensive robes clean," Kai smirked, walking back to his waiting black stallion.

"Mount up, Lieutenant."

"We still have a very long walk ahead of us before we rest."

The heavy military column resumed its highly disciplined march across the newly frozen, stable bog.

The thick, dreary fog eventually began to lift as they reached the far northern edge of the massive swamp.

The gray, snowy horizon finally broke open, revealing the sprawling, majestic heart of the Sun Realm.

The Imperial Capital of Helios sat nestled securely between two towering, snow-capped mountain peaks.

It was a breathtaking, colossal metropolis forged from pure white marble and shining, polished sun-gold.

Massive, hundred-foot walls surrounded the outer civilian districts, heavily fortified with burning solar siege weapons and towering guard spires.

At the very center of the city rose the Sun Spire, a towering, magnificent palace that pierced the low clouds like a golden needle.

"It is unimaginably massive," Zara breathed out, reining her tired horse to a halt on the high ridge.

"My desert warbands have never laid siege to defensive walls that high."

"We do not need to lay a traditional, boring siege," Kai promised her, staring intensely at the distant, shining capital.

"We are not going to wait out there in the freezing snow until they slowly starve to death."

"We are going to walk right through their highly decorated front door."

Yena rode up directly beside him, her amber eyes reflecting the distant, burning lights of the sprawling enemy city.

"Meriel definitely knows we are here now," Yena warned softly, gesturing toward the heavy smoke rising from the capital’s forges.

"He will have the entire Royal Dawnguard waiting on those high walls to greet us."

"I am heavily counting on it," Kai smiled, a cold, ruthless expression that promised true devastation.

A glowing blue system prompt materialized directly in front of his face in the cold air.

[System: Campaign Phase Three Initiated]

[Final Target: The Imperial Capital of Helios]

[Objective: Slay the Sun Emperor Meriel]

[Warning: The target possesses Divine-Tier solar shielding]

[Siege Event: The Frozen Crown begins now]

Kai dismissed the prompt with a lazy, uncaring flick of his cold fingers.

He looked at Yena, then over at the eager, hungry face of the desert warlordess standing ready for battle.

"Make our camp right here on the high ridge," Kai ordered his two primary commanders.

"Let the men rest their feet, eat the captured provincial grain, and sharpen their steel for tomorrow."

"Tonight, we sleep in the freezing snow like wolves."

"Tomorrow, we sleep comfortably in the Emperor’s warm bed."

Yena and Zara both offered him fierce, vicious smiles, turning their mounts in unison to begin shouting strict orders to the tired ranks.

Kai remained at the edge of the high snowy ridge, staring intensely down at the golden city glowing in the dark valley.

The little desert rogue had finally returned to the place of his birth.

And he brought a merciless winter hell with him.
