Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Cannot Soberly Watch Oneself Fall
By the time she emerged from the bathroom, more than an hour had passed.
And she was the only one who had been kicked out; who knew how much longer Quentin Blackwood would be in there.
Based on their last two encounters, one round was definitely not enough for him.
He had once again proven with his performance that he was not only far from old, but also had stamina in spades.
The ordeal had been torture for Ivy Sherwood. Not only were her knees nearly numb from kneeling, but her lips were swollen, and the man still had the nerve to criticize her performance, telling her to get more practice.
’What did he mean by "get more practice"? I can’t exactly practice by myself, so is my fiancé’s uncle planning to see me often from now on?’
’I wouldn’t mind seeing him, but this whole "fiancé of Silas Blackwood" title... doesn’t that need to go?’
Ivy Sherwood planned to find a chance to talk to Quentin Blackwood about it. If Quentin was willing to say something, Caleb Blackwood certainly wouldn’t make things difficult.
’A man is probably most agreeable in bed. I should have threatened him back in the bathroom. If he didn’t agree, I would’ve just bitten it off and made sure he could never be a man again!’
But alas, she had missed her chance. She would just have to wait for him to come out to discuss it.
But she waited until she was about to fall asleep, and Quentin Blackwood still hadn’t emerged.
In her drowsy state, Ivy Sherwood felt someone move the covers as an ice-cold body lay down beside her.
Quentin Blackwood had clearly taken a cold shower.
It was incredibly late, however, and her eyelids were too heavy to lift. She simply snuggled closer to Quentin Blackwood, wanting to warm him up.
Wide awake, Quentin Blackwood felt her move closer, but he couldn’t stand by and watch himself sink deeper.
’Ivy Sherwood is Silas Blackwood’s fiancée, my nephew’s future wife, the daughter of my enemy.’
’There won’t be a next time!’
...
When Ivy Sherwood woke up the next day, it was Quentin Blackwood who was gone this time.
Ivy Sherwood went into the bathroom and discovered her lips were indeed swollen!
After washing up, she came out to see that breakfast was already on the table, along with a cup of brown sugar water.
Ivy Sherwood sat down, cradling the cup of brown sugar water in her hands.
As she was leaving the hotel, she wanted to say goodbye to Quentin Blackwood, only to realize she didn’t even have his contact information!
’Next time I see him, I have to get his number!’
Ivy Sherwood bought a face mask and put it on before heading to work at the company.
On the way, Ivy Sherwood received a call from Nina Scott. "Ivy!"
"You have to tell me how last night went! If you don’t, I’m going to ambush you at your company. Was it intense? Was he any good? Was it one of the rich young masters from the banquet last night? Do I know him? Was it the guy who gave you the water?"
"I can’t say, and besides, nothing happened last night."
"Why not?"
"Because I got my period."
As a fellow woman, Nina Scott understood immediately, her face full of disappointment. "So you still haven’t given away your first time."
Ivy Sherwood touched the bridge of her nose but didn’t say anything.
"Oh, right, Ivy, Silas Blackwood has been blowing up my phone since this morning, demanding to know who the beautiful woman from last night was. He said it was love at first sight and that he’s already fallen head over heels for you. Can you imagine if he finds out the woman he’s so obsessed with is the person he hates the most? You think he’d want to slap himself a couple of times?"
"You can’t take anything he says seriously. Who knows how many women he’s said that to. He’s still going on about how much he likes Anna Nash every day." Ivy Sherwood didn’t give Silas Blackwood’s words a second thought.
"True. But what is the Blackwood Family thinking, insisting that Silas Blackwood marry you? Ivy, are you secretly of royal blood? Is there some hidden treasure that only you can unlock? Is that why Caleb Blackwood is so determined to make you the matriarch of the Blackwood family?"
"Or maybe you were born under a lucky star, with a birth chart so ridiculously perfect you’re guaranteed to bring your husband good fortune? Perhaps the Blackwood Family is destined for a great disaster that only you can prevent, so Caleb Blackwood wants you to save them?"
Ivy Sherwood put a hand to her forehead, not even having the energy to roast her friend.
"You’ve been watching too much TV. What is all this nonsense? With an imagination that wild, you should be a screenwriter."
"I just can’t think of any other reason, so I have to resort to mystical explanations."
Why did it have to be her? Ivy Sherwood wanted to know the answer to that question, too.
It was something she couldn’t figure out at all.
"I have to go, Nina. I’m almost at the office."
"Okay, okay, work hard. My brother said he’d treat us both to dinner in a couple of days."
The only person in the Scott Family that Nina Scott got along with was her older brother, Seth Scott.
The car pulled up in front of the Sherwood Company building. After so many years of development, Sherwood Company had grown to a considerable size. The corporate headquarters alone, not counting factory workers, had over five thousand employees, classifying it as a large enterprise.
Ivy Sherwood got out of the car, but unexpectedly, someone was waiting for her at the company entrance.
It was still ten minutes before the nine o’clock start time, and this was the first time Ivy Sherwood had ever seen Thea Sherwood at the company so early.
Next to Thea Sherwood was the head of the HR department. She sat at the main entrance, and everyone passing by stared at the little princess.
The little princess ignored everyone else, but the moment she saw Ivy Sherwood, Thea Sherwood shouted, "Stop!"
Who knew who Thea Sherwood was yelling at? Ivy Sherwood walked right past her.
"I told you to stop! Are you deaf?!" Thea Sherwood roared.
"Talking to me?" Ivy Sherwood paused and turned back to look at Thea Sherwood. "I was wondering which dog was barking so early in the morning. Turns out, it was you."
"You dare call me a dog!" Thea Sherwood was so angry she could spit blood.
’What does this Ivy Sherwood have to be so arrogant about!’
"Did I call you a dog? Which of your ears heard me say your name?"
Thea Sherwood could never win an argument with Ivy Sherwood, but that didn’t stop her from causing trouble every time. "Ivy Sherwood, you’re late! You’re fired!"
"The company’s official start time is nine o’clock. It’s still eight minutes until nine. Also, may I ask who you are now?"
Thea Sherwood finally felt like she’d regained the upper hand. She sat back smugly, then flicked her fingers, signaling for the HR person to inform Ivy Sherwood.
The head of HR didn’t dare offend the chairman’s precious daughter, so they had no choice but to say, "Miss Thea Sherwood is now a Director at our company, managing several of your departments. She is now your superior. Director Sherwood has just changed the start time to eight o’clock, so you are late!"
Ivy Sherwood was stunned for a moment. ’Thea Sherwood is a director?’
She had always believed that higher positions in the company should be held by people with corresponding abilities. When Thea Sherwood had just joined the company and was parachuted into a manager role, that was one thing—a position that many people could never hope to achieve in their lifetime.
But now, all she had to do was act cute and she could get a director position.
Some people were born at a finish line others could never reach. But did Thea Sherwood truly deserve to sit in such a position?
It wasn’t that Ivy Sherwood felt it was unfair to her personally. Rather, she believed that Thea Sherwood’s actions trampled on the hard work of many, making those who had been striving for so long feel increasingly hopeless.
"Did you hear that, Ivy Sherwood? I’m your superior now. You have to listen to everything I say!" Thea Sherwood gloated, enjoying the expression on Ivy’s face.
She loved seeing that look on Ivy—the one that said she wanted to take her down but couldn’t.
But then, Ivy Sherwood spoke. Her words made Thea Sherwood’s eyes widen in shock.
She said...
