Chapter 226: Chapter 226: Calling Quentin Blackwood

Ivy Sherwood finally submitted her perfume sample before the registration deadline, which felt like getting a major task out of the way.

For the past few days, the Blackwood Family had been pressuring her about the share transfer. Since Ivy Sherwood was no expert in such matters, she naturally handed it over to a professional.

Quentin Blackwood had told her to just leave the matter to Zane Linton, so Ivy Sherwood had entrusted it to Secretary Linton.

It was now past midnight, and Ivy Sherwood was just about to wash up and go to bed. She planned to visit her mother tomorrow.

She hadn’t seen her mother in a long time and wanted to tell her how she’d been doing recently to put her mind at ease.

Just then, she received a call from Caleb Blackwood. "Ivy Sherwood, I’ve already issued the engagement cancellation announcement just as you requested. Why haven’t the shares you’re holding been transferred back yet?"

’It has been some time. Haven’t they been transferred yet?’

Ivy Sherwood remembered that Zane Linton had processed the last share transfer quite quickly. She didn’t want the Blackwood Family’s shares, nor did she care when they found their way back to Caleb Blackwood. If it was taking this long, Zane Linton must have his reasons for the delay.

Ivy Sherwood said, "Don’t worry, Uncle Blackwood. I’ll look into it and give you an answer very soon."

Caleb Blackwood had already lost his patience. "Just hurry up. Or better yet, hand it over to me and let my people handle the transfer. Ivy Sherwood, don’t try to pull any tricks!"

"Don’t worry. As long as your Blackwood Family stops bothering me, I will return the shares in full. But Silas Blackwood has been harassing me every single day. If he continues tomorrow, I might have to reconsider returning the shares at all."

Ivy Sherwood’s voice dripped with disgust at the mention of Silas Blackwood.

’What in the world has gotten into Silas Blackwood? He keeps sending me things every day.’

Caleb Blackwood’s voice was laced with menace. "Ivy Sherwood, I know you’re smart, but don’t play games with me. I’m coming to find you tomorrow. We need to settle this matter with the shares once and for all!"

Ivy Sherwood had initially wondered if Caleb Blackwood had arranged the recent car accident. But since Silas Blackwood was the one injured, and Caleb seemed completely unaware of the incident, she concluded it probably wasn’t him.

As for the shares, while Ivy Sherwood had handed them over to Zane Linton, he wasn’t personally processing the transfer. Thus, Caleb Blackwood had no idea that Quentin Blackwood had a hand in it.

If Caleb Blackwood was going to come looking for her tomorrow, she really should check on the progress of the transfer.

After hanging up, Ivy Sherwood tried calling Zane Linton, but it didn’t connect.

She saw the contact saved as "Death Exemption Token" and debated whether to call him. They hadn’t been in contact much since he’d visited her home after their encounter at the hospital.

’It’s so late. Surely Quentin Blackwood isn’t busy now. I wonder if he’s asleep.’

As Ivy Sherwood mulled it over, her finger tapped the screen, and the call went through.

Despite the late hour, Quentin Blackwood was not resting. He was in the middle of an international video conference.

DG Group was one of the leading corporations in the country, and its international growth was also considerable.

In the world of business, Quentin Blackwood was an ambitious man, with countless overseas branches.

Because of the time difference, it was daytime overseas. Quentin Blackwood hadn’t been able to sleep anyway, and now he didn’t feel the slightest bit drowsy.

When his phone vibrated, Quentin Blackwood noticed it immediately. He almost never took calls or answered messages during a meeting, but upon seeing Ivy Sherwood’s name on the caller ID, he raised his hand, signaling for a pause.

He answered the call. "Ivy Sherwood?"

He spoke as he walked out of the study.

Hearing the deep voice on the other end, Ivy Sherwood’s heart clenched, and her fingers curled together involuntarily.

"Am I disturbing you?"

"No, I’m still working."

"Still working this late?"

"I’ll sleep when I’m finished," Quentin Blackwood said. But finishing his work would likely take several more hours. He probably wouldn’t get even two hours of sleep before daybreak.

"Okay."

"Calling me this late, is something the matter?"

Ivy Sherwood explained, "It’s not a big deal. I was actually trying to call Secretary Linton, but he didn’t answer. It’s about the Blackwood Family pressing me on the share transfer. Caleb Blackwood seems very anxious and said he wants to come talk to me in person about it tomorrow."

A cold chuckle came through the phone. "What are your plans for tomorrow?"

He had reminded Ivy Sherwood before to go see her mother.

Ivy Sherwood replied, "I plan on visiting my mother tomorrow. I haven’t been to see her in a long time."

"In that case, arrange to meet with Caleb Blackwood after you’ve visited your mother."

If Ivy could discover something there, she would be the one seeking out Caleb Blackwood, not the other way around.

The stalled share transfer was, in a way, a card he had left for Ivy Sherwood to play.

How she finalized the breakup and how she chose to use these assets—Quentin Blackwood wasn’t going to interfere. That was all up to Ivy Sherwood’s own abilities.

"I was planning on going first thing in the morning anyway," Ivy Sherwood said.

"Have your injuries healed?"

"They were just scrapes. Nothing serious to begin with." Ivy Sherwood hadn’t made a big deal out of it; she wasn’t a porcelain doll.

"By the way, Quentin Blackwood, if you’re not in a hurry to get to sleep, I have a few finance-related questions I’d like to ask you."

"Go ahead."

And so, Quentin Blackwood and Ivy Sherwood began to chat, and time passed without them realizing it.

The people on the other end of the video conference assumed President Blackwood had just stepped away to take a call and would be back in a couple of minutes.

Two minutes passed with no sign of him. They figured he’d be back in ten minutes, but ten minutes went by, and he still hadn’t returned.

President Blackwood had never taken such a long break in the middle of a meeting before. ’Half an hour,’ they thought, ’he has to be back after half an hour!’

However, it was more than a full hour before Quentin Blackwood’s figure reappeared in front of the camera.

His expression was as impassive as ever, but his voice was no longer as cold as it had been. "Let’s resume the meeting."

...

Early the next morning, Ivy Sherwood bought a bouquet of white roses and went to the cemetery.

The cemetery was quiet and desolate, with few people there to pay their respects.

Ivy Sherwood found her mother’s grave and laid the roses down before it.

"Mom, I’ve come to see you."

"I’m so sorry I’ve been so busy. I couldn’t visit until now. I miss you so much, Mom."

Roses were her mother’s favorite flower, but it was a shame that Timothy Sherwood had never once given her any.

Her mother was buried here, yet Timothy Sherwood almost never came to visit. In fact, it had probably been five years since he last came.

’Why did Mom choose Timothy Sherwood back then?’ Ivy Sherwood wondered. ’He’s probably long forgotten her. Was marrying him really worth it? Did you ever regret it, Mom?’

It seemed her mother had never had any family. Ivy Sherwood knew nothing about her maternal grandparents’ side of the family; her mother had never once mentioned them. When Ivy was little, she would often see her mother staring into space, holding half a Jade Pendant, seemingly lost in thought.

But as soon as her mother saw her, she would hide the Jade Pendant. Ivy had asked if she was homesick, but her mother had only shaken her head.

Later, when her mother passed away, her maternal grandparents never appeared.

As for that Jade Pendant, she didn’t know when it happened, but at some point, she stopped seeing her mother with it.

After her mother passed away, that half of the Jade Pendant was nowhere to be found among her belongings.
