Chapter 281: The Collector

The figure did not flee, and it did not attack.

It rose from its crouch slowly, deliberately, the same unhurried quality Kǎn had carried in the proving ground, and Lin Yi understood that whatever this thing was, it did not regard sudden movement as a useful tool the way most hostile entities did.

Up close, it resolved into something the Observer’s reading still struggled to fully categorize. Roughly humanoid, though the proportions were subtly wrong in a way that took a moment to identify — the limbs slightly too long, the joints positioned at angles that suggested a different structural logic than human anatomy used. Its surface carried the Middle Domain’s self-luminous quality, but muted, as though it deliberately dimmed itself rather than emitting at the ambient rate everything else in the realm produced.

In its hand, held with the same careful attention it had been giving the ground a moment before, was an object.

Lin Yi recognized it immediately.

Small, irregular in shape, carrying the unmistakable signature the Observer had flagged at the seal and the chamber — the Emperor’s origin, unambiguous and clear even at this distance.

A fifth fragment. Already recovered.

"That belongs to the Emperor’s inheritance," Lin Yi said.

The figure tilted its head, the gesture more curious than defensive. When it spoke, the voice carried a quality that did not map cleanly onto any single register he had heard before, layered, as though several voices were speaking in close unison rather than one.

"You know what this is," it said.

"I do," Lin Yi said. "I’ve recovered four others. The seal. The sword. The chamber." He kept the Thunder Surge Blade low but ready. "I’m the one it was left for."

The figure was quiet for a long moment, studying him with an attention that felt less like threat assessment and more like genuine reconsideration.

"That would explain why the markers responded to you," it said, finally. "I have been collecting these for some time. I did not understand why several of the locations I searched were already disturbed by something with intent rather than by natural decay. I assumed a rival collector." It paused. "I did not assume the intended recipient."

"You’re not the intended recipient," Lin Yi said.

"No," the figure agreed, without apparent offense. "I am not. I was not built for that purpose."

"Then why are you collecting them?"

The figure looked down at the fragment in its hand, turning it slightly, the small irregular object catching the Middle Domain’s ambient light.

"I was made by something that came apart at the same time the Celestial Domain came apart," it said. "Whatever made me had purposes of its own, oriented around the same collapse that scattered your Emperor’s inheritance across these realms. When it was destroyed, what remained of its purpose passed to me, incomplete and without full context. I have spent a long duration retrieving fragments of things that were dispersed during that event, without always understanding what they were for or who they belonged to."

Lin Yi held the Thunder Surge Blade steady.

"You’re not collecting the Emperor’s inheritance specifically," he said. "You’re collecting everything that scattered when the Celestial Domain fell."

"Yes," the figure said. "The inheritance items are part of a much larger dispersal. The Domain’s fall was not a single event with a single set of consequences. Many things came apart at once. I retrieve what falls within the scope of what I was made to retrieve, regardless of whose name is on it."

Lin Yi thought about this carefully.

"Then we may not be in conflict," he said. "If your purpose is broader than mine, and mine is specifically the Emperor’s inheritance, there may be no reason for us to contest each other over the same objects."

"There may not be," the figure agreed. "But I do not relinquish what I have already collected without understanding clearly why I should."

"Because it isn’t yours to keep," Lin Yi said. "It was left for someone specific. You’ve confirmed that yourself. Holding it serves no purpose of your own that I can see — you said you collect without always understanding what the items are for. I understand exactly what this one is for. The Emperor designated me to receive it."

The figure was silent for a long moment, the unmoving stillness of something processing through a framework Lin Yi could not fully read.

"That is a reasonable claim," it said eventually. "I do not have a mechanism for verifying it independently. But the markers’ response to you, and the chamber’s access condition, which I encountered and could not pass, both suggest the claim is accurate."

It held the fragment out, not thrown, not offered carelessly, but extended with the same deliberate care it had used to examine the ground before Lin Yi arrived.

Lin Yi stepped forward and took it.

The contact produced the now-familiar resonance with the Emperor’s Pouch, the tattoo on his wrist warming, and a notification arrived before he had fully processed the exchange.

[Inheritance Fragment Recovered]

[Item: Withered Branch — Pre-classification origin]

[Status: Fragment of the Celestial Emperor’s dispersed inheritance]

[Sequence completion: 5 of unknown total]

[Xu Ling notification: Inheritance recovery event registered]

He placed it into the Pouch and looked back at the figure.

"Thank you," he said.

"It was not generosity," the figure said, echoing, without apparent awareness, the same phrase Kǎn had used in the proving ground. "It is simply correct. I retrieve what is scattered. I do not contest ownership once ownership is established."

It turned back toward whatever it had been examining in the ground before Lin Yi’s arrival, the conversation apparently concluded from its perspective.

"Will our paths cross again?" Lin Yi asked.

"Possibly," the figure said, without looking up. "I will continue retrieving what was scattered. If I find more of what belongs to your Emperor, I will hold it until you arrive, rather than collecting it into my own purpose. That seems the correct adjustment, given what I now understand."

Lin Yi looked at the figure a moment longer, the strange humanoid shape crouched again over the ground, methodical and patient and entirely without malice, simply doing what the remnant of its own broken purpose still asked of it.

"What should I call you?" he said.

The figure paused.

"I do not have a name in the sense you mean," it said. "What made me did not give me one before it was destroyed."

Lin Yi considered this.

"Then I’ll call you something," he said. "If we’re going to keep crossing paths."

The figure looked up again, the curious tilt of its head returning.

"That would be acceptable," it said.

Lin Yi thought about the methodical patience, the careful retrieval, the way it had simply handed over what it understood to no longer be rightfully its own the moment the claim was clear.

"Keeper," he said.

The figure considered this for a long moment.

"Acceptable," it said again, and returned to its search.

Lin Yi stood in the clearing a while longer, the Thunder Surge Blade sheathed now, the fifth fragment settled in the Emperor’s Pouch alongside the others, and thought about how the Middle Domain kept producing exactly the kind of unresolved, half-explained, genuinely strange encounter that made the realm feel less like a destination and more like the true beginning of something considerably larger than level 250 had ever suggested it would be.

He turned from the clearing and continued walking.
