Chapter 276: The Proving Ground
The figure crossed the arena floor without any of the spatial transitions Lin Yi had grown used to. No Heaven Step equivalent, no Buddha Step-style instant relocation. Just walking, deliberate and unhurried, the contest’s Law apparently valuing the honest closing of distance as much as it valued the honest comparison that would follow.
Lin Yi let him close it.
He used the time to read what the Observer could give him. The figure’s Law of contest was unfamiliar in its specifics but the organizing principle was clear enough: every engagement under this Law was structured to be revealing rather than concealing, the contest itself designed to strip away anything that wasn’t genuine depth. A cultivator could not bluff here. Whatever was real would be the only thing that mattered.
That suited him.
He had nothing to hide and nothing performed. What he carried was what the gates had confirmed and the chamber had deepened.
The figure stopped at a respectful engagement distance and inclined his head slightly. "Your Law is Slaughter," he said. "I read it the moment you stepped through the door. Developed depth, recently stabilized. You’ve been worked on."
"A chamber," Lin Yi said. "Not far from here."
"I know the one." The figure’s eyes carried something that might have been respect or might have been simple professional interest, the distinction not obvious from outside his Law’s framework. "Few who find it stay long enough to cross a full stage. Most don’t understand what they’ve found until they’ve already left."
"I understood," Lin Yi said.
"Clearly." The figure settled into a stance that was not aggressive, simply prepared. "I am Kǎn. I have held the Law of contest long enough that the proving ground recognizes me as its keeper rather than as a visitor. I do not fight to win. I fight to show you exactly where your edge currently sits, so that you carry that knowledge forward instead of an illusion."
"That’s generous," Lin Yi said.
"It isn’t generosity," Kǎn said. "It’s the Law. I cannot conceal anything from you any more than you can conceal anything from me. The contest will be honest regardless of what either of us intends."
Lin Yi held the Thunder Surge Blade at a low ready position.
"Begin when you’re prepared," Kǎn said.
Lin Yi did not wait long. Waiting would have been its own kind of dishonesty, the performance of caution rather than the genuine assessment that had already concluded. He moved.
Phantom Void Step carried him across the gap, and Resonant Strike followed immediately behind the spatial transition, the technique that had been a tool in the Lower Domain now an expression that flowed through the integrated framework the chamber had produced. The strike landed at a precise angle the Observer’s reading had identified during the approach.
Kǎn met it without retreating.
Not with a weapon. With his bare hand, the contact between Lin Yi’s blade and Kǎn’s palm producing no blood, no visible wound, simply a sustained pressure that absorbed the Resonant Strike’s secondary burst the way the Mountain Vanguard’s chest plate had absorbed the early exchanges on Tianyuan Star, except cleaner, more total, the absorption not a defensive mechanic but a direct demonstration of depth.
"Good structure," Kǎn said, as though commenting on a piece of art rather than responding to an attack that would have ended most Lower Domain engagements in a single exchange. "The Law expresses cleanly through the strike. No hesitation in the identification, no wasted motion in the delivery."
He did not counter.
Lin Yi pressed again, Void Severance layered behind a second Resonant Strike, the spatial penetration component aimed at bypassing whatever mechanism Kǎn had used to absorb the first contact.
It bypassed nothing. Kǎn’s palm received it the same way, the contest’s Law apparently extending some quality of total honesty to his own defense as well, no concealed weak point for Lin Yi to find because Kǎn was not hiding one.
"You are reading for a flaw," Kǎn said. "There isn’t one to find here. Not because I am flawless. Because you are at developed depth and I am several stages beyond it. The gap is not a flaw in my structure. It is simply the gap."
Lin Yi absorbed this without slowing his pace.
He activated Attribute Surge and Dragon Sovereign together, the combined temporary multipliers pushing his output toward its peak, and drove Final Cut through the five-second charge with full commitment, the technique assembling every available offensive channel into a single delivery the way it had against Cang Yutian and the Mountain Vanguard and the deep zone’s Mirror Construct.
Kǎn watched the charge build without interrupting it.
"You could have stopped that," Lin Yi said, mid-charge, the words costing him nothing the technique required.
"I could have," Kǎn agreed. "But the contest is honest in both directions. If I interrupted every technique before its completion, you would never see what your full output actually produces against someone at my depth. That information is the entire point."
The Final Cut released.
It struck Kǎn directly, the assembled output landing without deflection or absorption trickery, simply received and held against, the contact producing a visible strain in the contest’s Law-keeper for the first time since the exchange began, a flicker of effort crossing his expression that had not been present before.
Then it passed, and Kǎn was unmoved.
"That," Kǎn said, "is closer to what developed depth’s penetration property should produce. You felt the difference."
"Yes," Lin Yi said.
He had felt it. Final Cut against Kǎn had cost something it had not cost against any opponent below the Middle Domain, and had produced something — a flicker, a strain, a half-second of genuine effort — that nothing in the Lower Domain had required of an opponent at this kind of gap.
"What does that tell you?" Kǎn asked.
Lin Yi considered the honest answer rather than reaching for something that sounded complete.
"That developed depth is real," he said. "And that it is still not enough to close a gap of several stages."
"Correct," Kǎn said. "And?"
Lin Yi looked at him. The contest’s Law was still operating, still stripping away anything performed, and he understood that Kǎn was not asking idly. The contest revealed. It did not just reveal to the loser. It revealed to whoever was paying attention.
"And the gap is closeable," Lin Yi said. "Through the same process that got me from foundational to developed. Not faster than that allows. Not by anything I could force."
Kǎn’s expression shifted into something that, on a face built around the Law of contest, was as close to approval as the framework permitted.
"You understand the proving ground’s actual purpose," he said. "Most who come through that door are looking for a victory. You came looking for an honest reading. That is rarer, and it is the only thing this place was ever built to give."
He stepped back, the engagement distance widening of his own accord.
"I will not press you further today," Kǎn said. "You have what you came for. The door will let you return when you’ve deepened further, if you wish to measure the distance again."
Lin Yi lowered the Thunder Surge Blade.
"Thank you," he said.
"Don’t thank me," Kǎn said. "Thank the honesty. I am only its keeper."
He turned and walked back across the arena floor, the same unhurried pace as his approach, and Lin Yi stood alone in the contained shimmer of the proving ground’s boundary with the clear, unflattering, and genuinely useful knowledge of exactly how far developed depth had taken him and exactly how far it had not.
He looked toward the door he had entered through.
He had a great deal more walking ahead of him.
He went back through.
