Chapter 114: Fel’s Backstory
While Marie was busy informing the two teachers and their students about his words, Leon quickly located Fel and approached her.
As usual, the girl was out of sight, staying alone in her room.
When he found her, Leon hesitated for a moment before entering the room. After all, even if she was his subordinate, she was still a lady.
"Um, do you need something, boss?"
Leon’s gaze lingered on her outfit for a moment, and his confusion deepened. She was dressed in a purple crop top that exposed her midriff, and a pair of jeans that barely reached her knees, revealing her slender legs with no hair.
Apart from Cassie, Fel was the strangest existence he knew. She was a shy and timid person, he knew. However, she kept contradicting herself by wearing clothes that drew gazes to her.
Wouldn’t someone as shy as her prefer clothes that attracted less attention?
Quietly pondering in his heart, Leon said, "I came to speak with you. Sit."
The girl nodded and sat at the edge of her bed. Meanwhile, Leon pulled a chair in the room and sat opposite her.
"I’ve been meaning to ask, what about your family? You haven’t said a thing about them since I’ve known you."
After they all agreed to become his subordinates, Cassie had been the first to tell him about her family. Then, he learnt that Miguel was an orphan who only attended the university by scholarship. Marie’s situation was simpler, as they already found her daughter and he knew who her husband was. As for Richard, the guy still reminisced about his family with the hope of meeting them.
However, that was almost impossible for now since they were abroad when the apocalypse started.
This left Fel as the one he knew the least about. So, today, he finally decided to ask her.
Fel was visibly surprised by his question, then she lowered her head.
"I... I come from a family of four. My parents, my brother, and myself," She started. "My mom died when I was in high school, and my dad became a drunkard. Before then, he’d dote on us and even beat up anyone that caused us trouble. But after mom died, he collapsed. He began abusing the others in the neighborhood, and everyone hated him."
Leon’s eyes narrowed as he listened. At first, he suspected Fel’s timidity came from abuse from someone, but now, it seemed that wasn’t the case.
"He still treated my brother and me nicely, but he was making it harder for us to live in the neighborhood. Two months ago, he was arrested and sent to jail. That’s why I don’t bother looking for him."
Leon nodded in understanding, then asked, "What about your brother?"
Fel shook her head. "He ran off after dad got jailed. I don’t even know his whereabouts."
Leon leaned back in his chair, processing what she had just said. Her family was tragic, probably even more than his own. After all, unlike his father who abandoned them, Fel’s father got depressed and slowly worsened until he was arrested.
This proved that he deeply loved his wife to be devastated by her death and unable to recover.
Sighing, Leon returned his gaze to her, then asked after a moment of thought.
"Do you specifically like crop tops?"
He phrased it as a casual question, though it was his way of probing her personality. After all, with what he knew, a shy person wouldn’t casually wear clothes that exposed their body.
’Why am I getting fixated on this?’
Meanwhile, Fel smiled faintly and answered, "I like them. After all, they remind me of my mother."
Leon blinked in surprise, opened his mouth, then closed it. He had no words. He thought her reason for choosing such clothing was something mundane, but didn’t think it would be tied to sentimental memories.
"My dad noticed that I liked them a lot, so he bought a whole collection of them for me."
A fond smile graced her lips as she spoke, remembering her jailed father. It seemed even though everyone in her neighborhood hated the man, she still loved her father.
"I see," Leon nodded, but then a frown appeared on his face. "That means you wear them often, don’t you?"
She nodded, prompting him to move to his next question.
"Then didn’t you notice people paying attention to you?"
The girl nodded, her yellow eyes flashing with unknown thoughts.
"You’re right. But that must be because I’m black... I guess?"
Leon almost facepalmed. The way she spoke plainly proved that she didn’t really understand why people were looking at her.
Skin tone or background didn’t really matter. Fel was beautiful, capable of competing with someone like Marie and Gwen. Her face, a mask of shyness, and her attractive body, were enough to draw attention to her.
However, it seemed this girl was completely oblivious to her own attractiveness.
’That explains it,’ Leon thought inwardly. ’I was getting worried since she has been unintentionally attracting attention since we’ve started moving, and I wouldn’t want anything to happen to her.’
After all, this was a world with no laws, and humans could be very cruel to their own kind. Leon was sure that if someone like Marcus had seen Fel, then he would have forced her into being his woman.
’But I can’t just tell her to stop wearing those. After all, it’s tied to her mother. I guess I should just give a little hint.’
Nodding inwardly, he looked at her and said, "You’re attractive, Fel. So people will definitely look at you. Even more when you expose more of your skin. But it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It simply means people notice your beauty."
’She’s a reliable person, though a bit naive. If anything happens, then it’s my responsibility to protect her.’
Fel’s head dropped lower, unconsciously tightening her grip around her knees.
"I... I’m attractive...?" She mumbled in a low voice.
Chuckling, Leon answered, then stood up.
"Mn, definitely," He prepared to leave, but then remembered something. "Oh, right! I wanted to give you this."
He took out the Force Ring and handed it to her.
"A-A ring?!"
Fel’s heated face burned even hotter, while Leon deadpanned.
