Chapter 205: Sixth Day of Quest; Little Nao and the Engine Room
"Why do we have to wake up so early? OOOOH ~ ~ ~ " Magen complained beside me while yawning.
It is already the sixth day of the mission and we all woke up early to welcome Professor Rudelle.
Since yesterday, when I wrote her a letter to confirm the discovery and mark the location of both caves, Professor Rudelle replied that she would be here first thing the following morning — that is, today.
The letter from the Imperial City of the Human Kingdom also arrived without difficulty.
And the letter from the director of the Royal Academy, Professor Roselle, also replied to the letter with enthusiasm, full of praise and congratulations.
But I could almost read between the lines that Professor Roselle had not expected us to actually find the ancient runes, much less in so few days. We did not even take a full week to complete the mission.
I did not know whether to feel happily proud or sadly underestimated.
"The elder sister Rudelle will come to confirm and secure the mission objective of this Quest." Xifia, on my other side, explained to Magen, who was obviously not paying attention.
" ~ Vremya smells great in the mornings ~~~ uhnmm ~~~ sniff ~ sniff ~ "
"What elder sister! She is just an old witch ~ besides, she probably drank until very late last night and has not even gotten up by now..." Magen stretches, placing her arms behind her head and gripping her elbows.
"sniff ~ sniff ~"
"Maybe you are right..." Xifia could not argue against Magen’s point.
Kara is sitting nearby on the old captain’s tomb reading a book — the book is codex-style and not the scroll type. Or rather, it looks more like a notebook.
Tikshna and Destan are standing at our sides. Of course, everyone is now ignoring the person behind me who has her arms wrapped around my waist and is smelling my neck.
"Sniff ~ sniff ~ deep inhale "
"Dian! Stop doing that already, it is hot too, move away!"
"But Vremya smells so good in the mornings ~~ and she is so soft ~ ~ ~ "
"I..."
" ’ OO AAA Captain! Nao has moved in! ’ "
I was about to scold Dianeira but the voice of a small girl entered my mind, interrupting my thoughts.
After a full night, just how much information must have been backed up into that mysterious giant bracelet.
Mentally responding to Nao, I decided to leave the girls here. I took Dianeira’s hands that were pressing against my stomach to pull them away and break her embrace.
"It is getting late. Dian, you and Tikshna prepare breakfast."
Slipping out of Dianeira’s arms, I asked both her and Tikshna to make something to eat while Professor Rudelle made her way to the cave.
"Where are you going?"
"I am going to the engine room to check that shield-generating artifact and see if the energy generator still works..."
Professor Rudelle has been given the coordinates of both caves in a letter. Although Xuexue’s previous cave is blocked off and is not a priority right now.
Outside, at the entrance of the large cave, my shadow guardian Tama is waiting for Professor Rudelle at my request.
Instead of wasting time here waiting for Professor Rudelle, I can take the opportunity to go to the engine room and disassemble that protective-field generator artifact.
Speaking of shield-generating artifacts — while I was resting in the -Reminiscence Room- I tried to communicate with that black egg, but even though I can sense a faint feeling, it seems the thing inside is not completely formed yet.
The one thing I am certain of is that it is not a -child- of that alien queen spider, but rather a kind of appendage detached from its body that it wants to use as a means of communication.
Is it not easier to just hand me her -Letters Name- contact?
Ah! Right, there are no phones in this world. But there is a -Letters Name- network.
Ahh but, she must have an -antenna- set up somewhere that is connected to the -Letters Name- network...
I suppose handing me an extra-corporeal appendage is not such a bad idea...
Only — what will come out of the black egg? A small black alien spider with a human torso? If that is the case, I will most likely end up arrested for alien conspiracy if anyone sees me with her.
It is not like in that game -World of Warcraft- where you can walk through -Stormwind- with a tiny -Deathwing- at your side as a pet...
" ’ OO AAA Captain! She is close! I can feel it, just pick me up and place me on your wrist... ’ "
"It is far too large to be on my wrist... Can you not see me and only feel me?"
" ’ OO AAA! Ever since I moved completely into the Captain’s bracelet I have lost my full connection with the ship, so I can no longer see the Captain! ’ "
"Does the ship have cameras?" I raised my head and tried to look for security cameras in the ship’s control room.
" ’ OO AAA! What is cameras? ’ "
"I will show you what a camera is later..." I looked at the large gray-white bracelet that was now blinking with a soft pink light.
My hands are already occupied with their own bracelets on each wrist, and around my neck there is already a necklace and a choker. This bracelet — I know it must have its own technology or magic. Its size can adapt to my body, or at least that is what Nao transmits to me, so it can go on any part of my body.
I even considered putting it on my ankle, but I think Nao would not want that.
Let us use Nao’s bracelet on my left wrist, alongside the slave bracelet with the fairy dust speck.
Reaching out with both hands, I picked up the bracelet and to my surprise I felt no resistance or great weight this time.
The bracelet glowed with a soft pink and white light, then it seemed to read my thoughts and began shrinking around my left wrist.
When the bracelet settled on my left wrist, my mind seemed to open up to a new special space. The entire interior of the ship seemed to lay itself out in my mind.
I closed my eyes to look at the ship from a new perspective and the vision in my mind was very different from my spatial perception. It was more like seeing materialized light whose signal went straight to my brain.
The ship gave me two contradictory feelings — one was that it was -dead-, but the other feeling was that it still held a vitality being born. But this vitality no longer belongs to the ship itself; it comes from the wood with which the ship was built. I can perceive this feeling through my fairy blood — it is the same feeling a tree or a forest gives me.
Then, at my side I could sense a presence. Lowering my gaze to my left, standing there was a small girl covered from head to toe in a light blue cloak, a wide smile on her lips, looking up at me with eyes so clear and pure, filled with innocent happiness.
The girl appeared to be around four years old. She also seemed to float in the air and yet her feet were on the ground; the cloak covering her seemed to ripple and sway like ocean waves.
The small girl’s little feet are bare and her tiny toes — like little white pearls — wiggle with the restlessness of a small child who cannot stay still.
I opened my eyes and to my surprise I could still see the small girl.
"Nao?"
" ’ OO AAA Captain? ’ " the small girl tilted her head and placed the index finger of her left hand in her mouth without taking her eyes off me.
"Never mind... Nao, let us go to the engine room. There is work to be done!"
" ’ OO AAA Yes! Captain! ’ " the small girl raised both hands toward the sky and gave a couple of small excited jumps.
Though I have no idea why she would get so excited just about going to a ship’s engine room...
But as we walked and moved through hallways, rooms, down staircases and through locked doors — thanks to my spatial magic that lets me become intangible on the material plane — I could see that little Nao gets excited about everything...
OO AAA over here, peering through a porthole or window on the ship; OO AAA over there, pushing with her small and delicate hands at broken and fragmented objects.
And one big OO AAA when we finally arrived at the engine room, with Nao spinning on her own axis with her arms stretched wide open.
I do not know whether Nao is a soul born to be an engineer or whether her excitement runs deep in her very being as the AI of a star-sailing ship.
Or perhaps a combination of both.
But looking as far as my eyes can reach across this enormous room, with those massive machines everywhere, with pipes that seem forged from iron and steel — it makes the blood of a man boil with excitement.
I can fully understand the feelings of excitement and wonder that Nao so easily shows when we enter the engine room.
