Chapter 238: Chapter 123: The Homecoming’s Figurehead (Part 2)
On the stage, Director Nifa didn’t stop them. Once she finished speaking, she turned and ascended the altar, placed the box she was holding on the table, and bowed slightly.
WHOOSH!
Everyone below the stage followed her lead, bowing in unison toward Ales’s relics.
"Legacy of Gunfire, the Spirits of Heroes Endure!"
"Legacy of Gunfire, the Spirits of Heroes Endure!"
"..."
Wei’en watched everything with a calm expression. ’Hall of Heroic Spirits...’
’He didn’t want to end up like Director Ales, silently dedicating his life to the Caster City State only for his glory to be consigned to the Hall of Heroic Spirits.’
’Some legacy, some spirits of heroes enduring—that wasn’t what he wanted!’
Finally, with a wave from Director Nifa, the box containing Ales’s relics, along with the three other items on the table, rose into the air.
They floated up to join the five boxes at the highest point, and behind them, a red candle quietly ignited, its wick flickering unsteadily.
"Let’s go."
After this was done, the crowd left the Hall of Heroic Spirits in an orderly fashion.
After the members of Investigation Department One returned to their office, Lisi left for a meeting. Before going, Lisi told them to wait, as there would likely be an announcement after it was over.
"Marco, why does Director Nifa wear a veil?" Lydia asked curiously.
"I think it’s because she was injured a long time ago," Marco replied casually.
Since returning from the Hall of Heroic Spirits, he had been lounging in his high-backed chair. He seemed to have recovered quite a bit and no longer looked so grief-stricken.
"Injured? Was she disfigured?"
"I’m not sure either. I just heard Old Jack mention it once when I first joined the Secret Investigation Department..."
Lydia murmured an "oh." Seeing that he still didn’t seem inclined to talk, she turned and sidled up to Kali to discuss the faith of the Dawn Church.
Ever since hearing about the system of faith at the Gladiatorial Arena, Lydia had become almost possessed, developing an immense interest in the Dawn faith. She had even gone out of her way to borrow a book of scripture from Kali.
Wei’en sat at his desk, listening to their conversation while silently refining the deduction sketch he had drawn earlier.
’A forbidden item...’ After a moment’s thought, he added the ship’s figurehead to the center of the sketch, marking the location of the Secret Investigation Department nearby.
He didn’t dare write the full name, worried it would further increase his connection to the figurehead. Instead, he drew a very ugly battering ram to represent it, adding a question mark to show it still needed to be confirmed.
Wei’en looked at the sketch of the Caster City State on the parchment, along with the various points of interest and several places that were yet to be confirmed.
’Almost there. As long as I can figure out a few more key points, I’ll be able to uncover the secret hidden behind this series of events.’
’When the time comes!’
’What I’ll need to do is try my best to avoid the core area, hide somewhere I’m unlikely to be found, and wait for the crisis to pass.’
’Of course, I need to get ready before then. I should learn a few more life-saving Magic spells and prepare some potions.’
’At the very least, I have to be able to save my own skin, right?’
Wei’en knew very well that in such a dangerous and strange world, rashly leaving the Caster City State was not the best choice.
Whether heading west to sea or east, the pollution of the red moon, aberrations, and the corrupting influence of various cults were all problems that needed to be solved.
’So...’
Wei’en looked at Tina beside him, and at the Demon Clown in her hands.
’Hmm, if I can get these two to come with me, then there shouldn’t be a problem.’
...
...
As Wei’en plotted how to save his own skin, events were in motion deep beneath the Basil District to the west.
Several tall, scantily clad, dark-skinned people dressed as sailors walked into the tunnel that was still being excavated.
"Sir, thank you for coming to help us this time."
A smile appeared on Black Jack’s rugged face. "Princess Nicolas, we’re all crewmates on the Black Pearl. No need to be so formal."
"Even so,"
Compared to Black Jack’s large frame, Nicole’s figure seemed much more petite, but she stood bolt upright, carrying herself with an air that was not inferior to Black Jack’s. She shook her head and said, "This is, after all, a private matter for our Vazquez Race..."
"Private matter? You received the last letter, I presume?"
"Yes," a flicker of imperceptible gloom crossed Nicole’s face. "We will strictly adhere to Captain Isabella’s will. We, the Vasquez People, will do everything in our power to assist you, Sir, in completing the captain’s mission and obtaining that forbidden item."
"Good."
Black Jack glanced at the busy sailors and asked casually, "What’s our progress?"
"We’re more than halfway there. We’ve just tunneled to the middle of the Natali District. According to the plan arranged with that old man, he will let us use Nocturnal City as a temporary base."
"Mm."
Seeing he had nothing to say, Nicole continued, "The operation is set for the night after tomorrow. In terms of timing, it should..."
"Wait!"
Black Jack raised a hand, cutting her off. He frowned and looked at a sailor not far away. "You, get over here!"
"Hm?"
Hearing his words, all the sailors stopped and turned to look at him.
Nicole also looked at the sailor in confusion, wondering what Black Jack had noticed.
"Me?"
The sailor was covered in sweat. Seeing Black Jack pointing at him, he wiped his face and jogged over.
"First Officer, sir, what are your orders?"
Black Jack studied him carefully. His skin was rough, his beard was scruffy, and his sailor’s uniform was dirty and messy, but something about this man felt very strange.
"Why do you smell like a woman?"
"A woman?" The sailor’s eyes went wide. "Sir, I... I’m a man."
"Of course I know you’re a man. I’m asking if you’re carrying any women’s belongings."
