Chapter 785: Chapter 784: Looking at Each Other in Bewilderment
"Three!"
"Two!"
"Get the hell out of here!"
Hearing Liu Zheng’s words, Li Hong and his two subordinates looked at each other, then slunk away from the villa.
"Phew!"
Watching Li Hong and the others leave, Liu Zheng took a deep breath of relief.
The battle from the past few minutes had consumed too much of his energy, and he felt somewhat exhausted.
Liu Zheng rubbed his temples and walked slowly back into the villa.
"Liu Zheng?"
"Is that you?"
Just then, Li Mengxue’s voice suddenly rang out.
Looking towards the source of the voice, Liu Zheng saw Li Mengxue, dressed in a white dress, and was momentarily stunned.
"Mengxue?!"
Liu Zheng gazed into Li Mengxue’s eyes and, for a moment, was utterly captivated.
Li Mengxue also paused briefly.
She never dreamed that Liu Zheng would actually show up at her home.
At that moment, Liu Zheng looked like a prince, his handsome face complemented by his sharp features, making him look even more dashing.
Li Mengxue stared at Liu Zheng blankly, momentarily losing her composure.
"Mengxue, are you alright?"
Coming back to his senses, Liu Zheng cleared his throat and asked with concern.
"I, I’m fine," Li Mengxue shook her head and replied.
Liu Zheng took a couple of steps forward and touched Li Mengxue’s head: "Mengxue, thank you for what you did today."
"It’s nothing," Li Mengxue blushed and responded.
"Alright, let’s sit down and have a chat," Liu Zheng nodded.
"Hmm!" Li Mengxue nodded lightly.
"Mengxue, how did you find me? Weren’t you in Hong Kong?" Liu Zheng asked, puzzled.
He remembered that Li Mengxue had said she was attending the archaeology department, but now, how had she come back to Yanjing City?
"I just came back last night," Li Mengxue sighed and said, "You know about last night’s incident, right?"
"Yeah! I’m aware!" Liu Zheng nodded.
"Actually, it was all the doing of that guy named Li Hao; he wanted to kidnap you to force me to marry him!" Li Mengxue said angrily.
"Why would he do that? Just because he admires me?" Liu Zheng was puzzled and asked, not understanding.
"Of course not!" Li Mengxue shook her head and said, "He likes you, so I became his pawn!"
Hearing Li Mengxue’s words, Liu Zheng was somewhat surprised.
"He likes me? What gives him the right to like me?" Liu Zheng asked in astonishment.
"That I don’t know," Li Mengxue replied with a bitter smile.
"Sigh!"
Liu Zheng exhaled hopelessly and asked: "Mengxue, why did you help me then?"
"Because I didn’t want you to get hurt," Li Mengxue looked into Liu Zheng’s eyes and said earnestly, "Because you are very important to me."
At her words, Liu Zheng felt touched.
Though Li Mengxue had simply expressed her feelings, Liu Zheng knew he was completely captivated.
"Mengxue, don’t worry, I won’t get into trouble," Liu Zheng said solemnly, "I will take good care of myself."
Li Mengxue nodded: "I believe in you!"
"Mengxue, I really owe you thanks for today. If not for you, I might have been in danger," Liu Zheng said gratefully.
"You don’t need to thank me; you’ve helped me so many times before. Consider this my way of repaying the favour," Li Mengxue shook her head and replied.
Liu Zheng nodded; he did not demur further, for he understood Li Mengxue’s feelings for him.
"Then, from now on, we’re friends!" Li Mengxue said cheerfully.
"Yes! From now on, we’re friends," Liu Zheng emphatically nodded.
Liu Zheng didn’t think much further, for such things didn’t matter to him at all.
"Alright then, I’ll just call you Liu Zheng for the time being!" Li Mengxue said with a smile, "Liu Zheng, if I ever have any trouble in the future, you better not ignore me."
Liu Zheng laughed heartily: "Don’t worry, Mengxue, just say the word, and I’ll definitely help you!"
"That’s what you said, you can’t go back on your word!"
"Once a word is spoken, it cannot be taken back like a wagon drawn by horses!"
Li Mengxue revealed a brilliant smile, "Liu Zheng, are you going to stay the night here tonight?"
"Uh... that’s actually a pretty good suggestion," Liu Zheng scratched his head, chuckling sheepishly.
"Liu Zheng! You jerk! You actually dare to flirt with me!"
"Hmph!"
"You... you..."
Li Mengxue pointed at Liu Zheng, her pretty face flushed red, momentarily at a loss for words.
"Hey, don’t be mad! I was just joking, just joking!" Liu Zheng touched his nose awkwardly, quickly apologizing, "Look, we know each other so well, you don’t mind, so forgive me this time, okay?"
"Who knows you so well!"
"Hehe!"
"Hmph!"
Li Mengxue snorted coldly and turned to walk into the villa.
"Come on, just think of it as doing me a favor, that’s okay, right?" Liu Zheng said with a smile.
"Fine!" Li Mengxue hesitated for a moment, then said through gritted teeth.
Seeing her reaction, Liu Zheng hurriedly scurried after Li Mengxue like an obedient child.
Li Mengxue couldn’t help but let out a snicker at Liu Zheng’s behavior.
"As long as you’re laughing, that’s good, that’s good!" Liu Zheng breathed a sigh of relief.
...
Liu Zheng and Li Mengxue sat on the couch, chatting idly.
The two had been desk mates since high school, and their relationship was very close.
After a long conversation, Liu Zheng realized that Li Mengxue was already twenty-six this year, yet she still acted like a child, lively and adorable.
This made Liu Zheng feel as if he had returned to those youthful days of junior high.
However, he quickly pulled himself back to the present, as he was no longer that naive young teenager.
Liu Zheng looked at Li Mengxue and asked, "Mengxue, I want to ask you something, and you must tell me the truth."
Li Mengxue was taken aback, then nodded her head.
Liu Zheng took a deep breath and asked, "So tell me, when you were kidnapped, how did you manage to escape?"
"The day you left, I was actually planning to call the police, but then I thought you would worry about me, so I didn’t make the call. I came up with an idea."
"Go on," urged Liu Zheng.
"It was nothing much really, I just sneakily took the phone and hid it under a chair.
Then I took the chance to run down the stairs when the kidnappers were away, hiding at the stairwell waiting for them to come back."
Liu Zheng suddenly understood, then asked again, "How did you know the kidnappers would come back?"
"Because once they came back, they would notice that my room had been turned upside down."
"But how could you be sure it was your doing?" Liu Zheng asked, puzzled.
Li Mengxue said with a smile, "Have you forgotten that I studied Taekwondo? Even though I’m only so-so at it, I still know how to gauge someone’s strength, speed, reactions, jumping ability, and so on."
"You’re really amazing!"
Liu Zheng exclaimed sincerely.
"Of course! I’m a top student, you know!" Li Mengxue said proudly.
Liu Zheng admired the confident Li Mengxue and couldn’t help but feel awed.
It seemed like Li Mengxue hadn’t slacked off in these past few years! Not only had she learned Taekwondo, but she had also greatly improved her skills.
Liu Zheng thought to himself, "Looks like I can’t fall behind either. I must work harder, or how can I keep up with Mengxue’s pace in the future?"
"By the way, Mengxue, didn’t you say that you encountered kidnappers? What happened to the kidnappers now? Are you okay?" Liu Zheng asked with concern.
"I beat the kidnappers down," Li Mengxue said playfully, sticking out her tongue, "but they haven’t left yet."
"What?"
Hearing Li Mengxue’s words, Liu Zheng couldn’t help but frown.
He never imagined that Li Mengxue would dare to fight the kidnappers!
"Liu Zheng, I’m fine,"
Seeing Liu Zheng’s worried expression, Li Mengxue’s face turned red as she explained, "They were just some thugs, I’m not afraid of them at all."
"Mengxue, you’re being too reckless. Do you think you’re some heroine from a martial arts novel? You could get in real trouble!" Liu Zheng scolded sternly, "You’re a girl, you can’t be so careless!"
"Liu Zheng, stop lecturing me," Li Mengxue pouted, "What about you? Why did you come here?"
"Ah... well...," Liu Zheng coughed awkwardly, not knowing how to respond.
He indeed didn’t want to tell Li Mengxue the truth.
