Chapter 43: Chapter 41: A Good Deed is Rewarded, News of Other Crops
’Did I see that wrong?’
’This is a school. Where would sweet potatoes come from?’
’Could some student have bought sweet potatoes to sneak into their dorm and eat?’
’And eaten them raw, of all things?’
’It just doesn’t make sense...’
Chen Chong doubted his eyes more than once. To confirm his suspicions, he quickly walked over with Wang Biao.
He took a closer look.
They really were sweet potatoes!
There on the concrete ground before him were five misshapen sweet potatoes, none of them even half the size of his palm.
Before he transmigrated, sweet potatoes of this quality wouldn’t just be ignored by customers; they were the kind of thing even pigs would turn their noses up at.
But after the transmigration, it was a different story.
As one of the classic crops that was easy to grow, had a high yield, and was very filling, the importance of sweet potatoes needed no explanation. History had already provided the answer—they were an absolute top-tier resource!
Besides staple crops like rice and wheat, among the countless other crops, only potatoes could compete with them.
’If I can find a patch of land to plant these and cultivate them properly, I’ll have sweet potatoes to eat in the future!’
Chen Chong was secretly relieved.
Thankfully, this stall was tucked away in a corner, remote enough that there weren’t many people around compared to other spots.
The stall owner also seemed to have just arrived. He hadn’t seen her before, and then she had appeared in the blink of an eye.
If he hadn’t spotted them in time, this batch of sweet potatoes would have undoubtedly been traded away within ten minutes.
Whether someone wanted them to eat, or had the same idea to plant them as he did.
Sweet potatoes were an absolutely hot commodity.
’I have to get them.’
’I must get them!’
"Hey, how are you selling these sweet potatoes?"
Chen Chong crouched down directly and looked at the stall owner.
The owner was a petite girl wearing a dress.
She had long, dark hair with bangs, and her small face featured lively, big eyes and a cherry-like mouth, giving her a playful and cute appearance.
However, her complexion didn’t look good. Her already delicate appearance was tinged with a hint of weakness—no doubt from hunger...
"I... I don’t know how to sell them."
The girl looked up at Chen Chong, her gaze evasive. She seemed to have severe social anxiety.
"What did you say?"
Chen Chong frowned slightly. Her voice was so quiet he could barely hear it, as if she were mumbling to herself.
"I... I said, I don’t know how to sell them," the girl said, mustering her courage and speaking up.
This time, Chen Chong heard her clearly, but his frown deepened.
’What does that mean?’
’She doesn’t know how to sell them?’
"Do you mean you don’t know what you want to trade them for?"
"I want to trade for food..." The girl’s voice was still quiet, but Chen Chong could just about make it out.
"Well, isn’t that simple? How much food are you looking to trade for?"
"I don’t know..."
"Huh?"
Chen Chong was dumbfounded. For a moment, he couldn’t figure her out at all.
’Is she some pampered little princess from a wealthy family who doesn’t know the first thing about the real world, or has she been starved into a stupor?’
"I don’t know how much stuff I should trade the sweet potatoes for. I only have a few, so I probably can’t get much food for them. But if I trade for too little, it won’t be enough for me to eat. If I ask for too much, the other person will be at a disadvantage. But I’m so hungry..."
The girl mumbled with her head down, a hint of grievance in her voice.
Chen Chong listened quietly. His expression remained calm, but inwardly, he understood.
’Yep, definitely a little princess from a rich family.’
’A kind, naive, and sheltered little princess who even considers things from the other person’s perspective.’
’Before the transmigration, that might have been a rare and precious virtue. But after, it’s actually a disadvantage.’
’This isn’t conducive to survival.’
’Especially when everyone around you has become selfish, cunning, and ruthless in the struggle for resources and survival.’
’A person this naive and kind is just a fat sheep or cannon fodder in everyone else’s eyes...’
"What’s your name?" Chen Chong asked.
"Shen Xinrou. I’m an art major. I just started school not long ago..."
"I see some dirt sticking to these. Did you try to plant them?"
Chen Chong picked up a sweet potato and observed it carefully, noticing some moist soil on its surface.
Shen Xinrou nodded slightly. "I thought that sweet potatoes were a high-yield crop. I planted them for four days, but there was no reaction, and a few of them even went bad. That’s why I dug them up to trade for some food."
"I know sweet potatoes can be planted, so they should be worth more food than just these five. It’s just that I don’t know how to grow them..."
Chen Chong glanced at her. "You’re not a complete idiot, at least. You know that planting sweet potatoes is more valuable than just eating them."
"But you have almost zero common sense about growing crops. If you don’t sprout sweet potatoes first, they won’t easily grow and are prone to rotting. Besides, this ’draining the pond to get all the fish’ approach only solves your immediate problem. What will you do after that?"
Shen Xinrou looked at him, her large, watery eyes filled with a deep sense of grievance.
"I don’t know either, but I’m really hungry right now..."
"Sigh..."
Chen Chong sighed, feeling that this was going to be difficult.
Honestly, compared to a kind, naive girl like Shen Xinrou, he’d much rather deal with the trio in yellow he met on the first day picking raspberries, or the group of four with weapons who were wary of him while picking mushrooms.
He wouldn’t feel a thing no matter how those kinds of people courted death. In fact, he’d even be tempted to screw them over completely.
On the other hand, someone like Shen Xinrou looked so pitiful that even if he just left her alone, he’d feel a pang of guilt...
’Thinking of that,’ Chen Chong wondered, ’what happened to those four people who were picking mushrooms?’
’Were those colorful mushrooms poisonous or not? Did they get poisoned to death?’
’If they weren’t poisoned, and the mushrooms are edible, I’d like to go pick some myself.’
’I should have asked for their info back then. I could have used them as guinea pigs for an experiment.’
’What a miscalculation...’
Just then, a young man with a backpack wandered over to the stall. His eyes lit up the moment he saw the five sweet potatoes on the ground.
"I’ll trade you three packs of instant noodles for them. Deal?"
Shen Xinrou looked at him, her expression dazed and hesitant.
"Get lost!" Chen Chong barked coldly.
The young man with the backpack froze. He looked at Chen Chong, then at Wang Biao standing beside him, and finally left without another word.
’Three packs of instant noodles for five sweet potatoes that could, in theory, appreciate in value infinitely?’
’That’s just too damn ruthless, isn’t it?’
’I was originally planning to offer ten packs, and this guy is even more vicious than me!’
"Forget it, I’ll trade with you." Chen Chong decided to help her out.
"Out of these five sweet potatoes, I’ll trade for four of them. For each one, I’ll give you a pound of cured venison, so four pounds total, plus some organs and bones with meat on them. If you’re frugal, it’ll be enough to last you at least ten days, maybe even half a month."
"As for the last sweet potato, I’ll teach you how to plant it. Also, those few bad ones you have at your place—you can’t eat them, but if you haven’t thrown them out, you can try planting them using the method I’ll teach you. They might still grow."
"If you have any questions about planting, or if you run out of food and get desperately hungry, you can come find me again. I can help you out a bit, until the sweet potatoes you plant have taken root, sprouted, and are ready for harvest."
’People as kind as Shen Xinrou are too rare. If for no other reason than this precious quality of hers, I’ll just consider this a good deed.’
’Besides, trading four pounds of venison plus organs and bones for four plantable sweet potatoes is, theoretically, still a net gain for me.’
’After all, the value of sweet potatoes is immense, especially here at the school where crops are scarce.’
’All I’m giving up is some knowledge about planting and a bit of occasional aid later on.’
’As long as the sweet potatoes are planted and cultivated properly, she’ll be able to get her first harvest very soon.’
’It’ll be tough and tiring at the beginning, but as long as she sticks with it, supporting herself shouldn’t be a major problem...’
Shen Xinrou stared at Chen Chong, not speaking for a long time, making it impossible to know what she was thinking.
After a long while, her eyes grew moist, and her voice trembled slightly.
"Thank you. You’re a good person. Looking at you... it’s like seeing my father."
"..."
Chen Chong was speechless. He’d just been given the "good guy" card. Plus, ’why does that sentence feel so weird?’
"Don’t mention it. Once my companion gets here, I’ll give you the meat."
"Mm-hmm~"
Shen Xinrou wiped her eyes and nodded obediently.
The two of them stood in silence, the atmosphere a little awkward.
Just then, Shen Xinrou spoke up again. "Are you planning to plant the sweet potatoes?"
"Of course."
"If there were other crops, would you be interested?"
"You have some?"
"Mmm, I do..."
Chen Chong looked at her, a hint of pleasant surprise in his eyes.
’I wandered around the entire trading market and didn’t find a single thing that could be planted.’
’I can’t believe that not only did I get sweet potatoes from Shen Xinrou, but it looks like I might be able to get other crops too.’
’Helping her wasn’t a mistake after all!’
’It’s true that kind people are rewarded.’
’That goes for her, and for me as well...’
