Chapter 27: Chapter 25: Massive Casualties, a Massacre
HIIISSSS~
"Hm? That sound again?"
The sound was louder this time, and the student who had turned around earlier looked even more confused.
A few others nearby heard it too and began looking around.
But in the dense jungle, there was nothing besides thick trees, tangled weeds, and overgrown shrubs—and them, the students. There was nothing else to be seen.
Many suspected it was just some insect and didn’t pay it much mind.
But as one girl happened to pull her gaze back, her eyes drifted slightly upward...
She turned her head away, then froze. In the corner of her eye just now... ’Did I see a flash of red?’
’What was that?’
Curious, she turned her head back and looked up.
She would have been better off not looking. The moment she did, she was utterly dumbfounded...
"AHHH!!!"
The girl shrieked and fell to the ground, her face instantly turning deathly pale.
She wanted to run, but her body wouldn’t obey. A rush of adrenaline from the terror sent uncontrollable tremors through her limbs.
"What are you screaming about? You’re going to attract the Giant Eagle!"
The boy next to her was annoyed, but seeing the terror on her face, he grew puzzled. Following her gaze, he too froze.
A few seconds of stunned silence...
"Ah—ah—fuck, a snake!"
He screamed even louder than the girl, scrambled to his feet, and bolted.
His cry sent everyone into a commotion, and they all began searching wildly around them.
The young man who had repeatedly looked back and seen nothing finally reacted, glancing upward...
A massive, dark maw was already lunging for his head.
In an instant, the upper half of the young man’s body was swallowed whole. He didn’t even have time to struggle; after a few twitches, he was sucked in completely.
Tragically, even in his final moments, he never saw what the creature that made the sound looked like—only two incredibly long, blood-red fangs.
Now, everyone finally saw it.
A terrifyingly long, giant python was coiled around a tree trunk, having appeared there at some unknown time.
Even coiled, its long body covered at least half the tree’s trunk.
It was incredibly thick, like an oversized iron barrel, its entire body covered in dark red patterns.
Its head was covered in small, jagged spines, like a crown of horns, and its emerald eyes held not a trace of emotion—only the pure indifference characteristic of a cold-blooded animal.
Swallowing a person made no difference to its size, as if it had merely eaten a small dessert.
Having tasted the delicacy of human flesh, its gaze now fell upon the others present...
"Whoa! That snake is huge!"
"Fuck, that thing’s gotta be at least twenty meters long, right?"
"A-Anaconda?"
"Run... run...!"
The group of students, who had been frozen in terror for several seconds, finally snapped out of it and began running for their lives.
However, the Blood Python’s position blocked their path back to the school. It was no longer coiled in the tree but had slithered down to the ground.
Its long body completely cut off the way back, and none of the students dared to run in the direction of the school.
Driven by the instinct to survive, more than half of them fled the jungle, running toward the open area by the river.
The smaller portion who could still think clearly knew that being trapped between the two threats was a dead end; their only hope for survival lay deeper in the jungle, off to the side...
"Huh? Why are the people from inside running out? Are they here to rescue us?"
At that moment, the people lying on the riverbank and in the water had no idea what had happened in the jungle and were completely bewildered.
"No, wait. It looks like they ran into some kind of monster, too. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be running even faster than before."
"There are monsters in the jungle, too? Doesn’t that mean we were right to hide in the water?"
"Fuck, what the hell kind of world is this? There’s a Giant Catfish in the water, a Giant Eagle in the sky, and now monsters in the jungle. This is a fucking deathtrap...!"
Seeing the students run out, the Stone Claw Eagle, which had been circling the sky for a long time without a target, finally made its move.
Its massive body dove down once more.
With lightning speed, it snatched up two students, one in each claw, and soared back into the sky, repeating its previous hunt.
It was as if catching people wasn’t about food for the eagle, but simply about enjoying the thrill of the hunt.
Or perhaps, it was cleaning out the strange humans who didn’t belong in this world...
"The eagle! The Giant Eagle is still here! Hide!" a boy shouted frantically.
"Hide my ass! The Blood Python is chasing us from behind! If we hide on the ground, we’re just waiting to die! Run!"
Everyone was running, though none of them seemed to have a clear destination.
But their survival instincts drove them to run ahead of everyone else; all that mattered was not being the last one.
With the Blood Python eating people from behind and the Giant Eagle snatching them from above, despite the two monsters and the hundreds of students present, not a single one thought they would be the unlucky one.
At least, that’s what they thought before they were caught...
CRASH! CRASH! CRASH!
Several trees were violently knocked aside. Having devoured the people who had collapsed to the ground, the Blood Python’s enormous body burst out of the jungle in pursuit of the crowd.
The pupils of those hiding in the water and the grass contracted. They finally understood why the students had fled the jungle.
’A python that big?’
It was even more shocking than the Giant Eagle and the Giant Catfish.
Among all animals, far more people have a natural fear of snakes than any other creature.
Never mind a python of this size; even a regular-sized, common snake could make people jump out of their skin.
As for this Blood Python, it was a miracle they hadn’t fainted on the spot...
The Stone Claw Eagle was still snatching people, picking its prey before diving down to strike.
The Blood Python was incredibly fast. Its massive body left deep gouges in the earth, and with a single coil, it could sweep up at least four or five people.
Then, with a gulp, it would swallow them all in a matter of seconds.
Again and again...
The scene had become a veritable slaughter.
Just then, a student hiding in the water seemed to notice something. Were those waves coming from behind?
’Is that... a fish?’
He looked back...
A Giant Catfish had appeared behind them at some point and was now floating silently on the surface, watching their group.
The single horn on its head stood tall, but most terrifying was its massive, tusk-filled mouth, which opened and closed as if practicing the motion of devouring a person.
"Club President, I..."
Before he could finish, he fainted and collapsed into the water.
Seeing this, the few young men beside him panicked and quickly held him up. At the same time, they caught sight of what was behind them.
They saw the exact same thing the other man had.
A Giant Catfish the size of a small hill had appeared in the deep water fifty meters away. Heaven knows how long it had been watching them.
All thirty-some of them instantly froze, not daring to move.
"When... when did it get here?"
"I-I don’t know."
"This is the shallow area. It shouldn’t be able to attack us, right?"
"Probably not. It’s too big. It can’t swim up here... can it?"
The Giant Catfish was indeed too large to reach its prey in the shallows. But they forgot one thing: while it couldn’t go to them, it could make them come to it.
The Giant Catfish suddenly dove into the water, then quickly resurfaced, its tail thrashing behind it.
Waves began to form, one after another, growing in strength as they crashed toward the shore.
By the time the people hiding in the water realized what was happening, it was too late.
A massive wave slammed into them, sweeping several unsteady students off their feet and pulling them toward the deep. They tried to grab onto something, but they were already a dozen meters from the bank.
As the waves rolled in, one after another, the students were like duckweed on the water, helpless as they were carried further and further into the deep...
