Chapter 15: Chapter 13: Cards Also Have Quality Differences, Gathering Information
"Of course. You’re the one who said there’s a discount for buying in bulk. Why else would I get two boxes? Yes or no? If not, I’ll go ask someone else."
The fatty’s face turned beet red. Finally, he grit his teeth. "Deal. I’ve only got two boxes of antibiotics anyway. Might as well clear out my stock by trading them both to you. But I can only give you a discount of one bag. It’ll be nine bags of instant noodles in total."
"Fine," Chen Chong agreed. "But I don’t have that many instant noodles. Can I trade with other food instead?"
The fatty nodded. "Yeah, as long as it’s food."
"Alright." Chen Chong took the bag and pulled out a few food items...
Three cups of instant noodles, two sausage links, five small bags of bread rolls, and about ten kiwis.
The sausage links, bread rolls, and kiwis obviously weren’t enough to make up for six bags of instant noodles.
But Chen Chong was holding cups, and large, extra-portion ones at that.
Each cup contained two noodle bricks, making it equivalent to two regular bags of instant noodles.
That way, the remaining sausage links, bread rolls, and kiwis were more than enough, adding up to roughly the same value as nine bags of instant noodles.
Holding the pile of food, the fatty’s face, which had been grim from the haggling, instantly broke into a wide smile.
’If I ration this, I won’t have to starve for at least three days. I can live for another three days...’
Seeing that the bags in their hands seemed to still have more goods, he quickly tried to push his other medicines.
"Bro, I’ve still got all this cold medicine here, you want it? I’ll give you a discount on this too, much cheaper than the antibiotics."
"No thanks. You can sell it to someone else."
Chen Chong took the antibiotics and left. He wasn’t short on cold medicine; he still had four full boxes in his cabinet.
Although it was always good to have more, he didn’t have enough supplies to trade for it.
For now, he was only trading for things he was most likely to need...
After that, Chen Chong, Xu Jun, and Wang Biao continued to wander around the Central Square.
Along the way, they traded for a few more things.
One sausage link and three small bags of bread rolls were exchanged for a tube of erythromycin ointment.
The last ten kiwis were traded for a pair of size 45 sneakers for Wang Biao.
After all, Wang Biao was a big guy. He couldn’t fit into either Chen Chong’s or Xu Jun’s shoes and was still wearing slippers, his heels sticking out the back.
Getting him a proper pair of shoes was a necessity.
This gesture deeply moved Wang Biao once again, and his Loyalty rose by several points, approaching 90.
Chen Chong was now left with only two small bags of bread rolls, which probably wouldn’t get him much of anything.
But the three of them weren’t in a hurry to go back.
Instead, they continued to look around for a while.
It had to be said, although supplies at the school were scarce, you couldn’t beat the sheer number of students.
Even if most students didn’t bring much with them to school, there were always some who would hoard unexpected items.
For example, hot pot base, flour, vegetable oil, various seasonings, and toiletries.
Chen Chong wanted to get his hands on many of these things. Even if they weren’t necessities, they could improve their quality of life.
’Unfortunately, circumstances don’t permit it. I’ll have to come back and trade for them later, after I’ve hunted something and have plenty of food...’
The further they walked, the more people they saw selling things, and the items for sale ranged from useful to useless, and even to downright bizarre.
Some were even selling socks and underwear—probably used, too. Only a complete moron would buy them.
There were also many normal-looking items, but they came with a certain degree of risk.
For example, some girls were selling wild fruits. There seemed to be a lot of them, and they were large, but they were a mishmash of bright colors and bizarrely shaped. Nobody recognized them at all.
The "vendors" themselves probably didn’t even know if they were edible.
What surprised Chen Chong the most was seeing a stall selling Cards.
There was nothing at this stall except for a skinny-looking vendor holding a white Card, which had the image of a dagger etched onto it.
It looked very similar to the Refined Iron Dagger in his own hand.
The only difference was that one was a D-Class that glowed with a white light, while the other was a C-Class that glowed with a green light.
Getting closer, Chen Chong could see that the dagger on the Card looked very crude. It hadn’t been finely polished, and even the material didn’t seem to be very good...
"This is a D-Class Resource Card I stumbled upon today while I was out digging for wild vegetables. The item is a Crude Iron Dagger. It’s not as good as a modern knife, but it’s definitely fine for cutting meat and other things. You can also use it for self-defense. If I weren’t short on food, I wouldn’t be selling it."
As the skinny vendor described his Card, Chen Chong fell into deep thought.
’A Crude Iron Dagger and a Refined Iron Dagger... So my dagger is a higher-tier version of the item from this Card?’
’Does this also mean that Cards of different classes might produce the same item, but with differences in quality?’
’Besides, they’re both D-Class, but this Crude Iron Dagger seems completely inferior to a D-Class Farmland Card or Vacant Land Card. How can they be considered the same class?’
’Could it be that even within the same class, there’s a huge disparity between items? Like a lowest tier and a highest tier?’
Chen Chong had suspected this for a while.
After all, from any angle, the C-Class Recruitment Card that gave him Wang Biao was far more cost-effective than the C-Class Refined Iron Dagger.
He even felt that within the same class, there were good and bad versions of Building Cards, Recruitment Cards, Resource Cards, and so on.
For instance, Building Cards were rarer than Resource Cards.
And Recruitment Cards were even rarer than Building Cards.
’So, are there even rarer Cards than Recruitment Cards that haven’t appeared yet?’
’Cards aren’t just divided by Rating; there are also tiers of quality within the same class, just like the D+ and D- from the daily settlement.’
’The better your performance, the higher the Rating you receive, and the better the quality and rarity of the Cards you get...’
Chen Chong didn’t know the specifics, but he knew the answer would become clearer the longer he stayed here.
While he was thinking, the skinny youth’s dagger Card was traded to a girl with red-dyed hair.
It was exchanged for a self-heating hot pot and five bags of crispy noodles.
The crowd dispersed, and Chen Chong’s group of three continued on in another direction.
Just then, he noticed a peculiar stall.
A young man wearing black sunglasses was sitting on a stool. There was nothing in front of him but a piece of paper covered in writing.
"Information for sale. I know everything that happens in this school, top to bottom."
"Pay with food. Ask me anything. If I don’t know, you don’t pay."
’Interesting...’
Chen Chong was intrigued. It seemed this person planned to make a living with his wits.
’As it happens, I do have some things I want to ask about. I just wonder if he really has the goods.’
He took out his last two small bags of bread rolls.
"Two small bags of bread rolls. Can I ask something?"
Seeing the bread rolls dangling before him, the young man in sunglasses grinned and said excitedly, "Of course! Come on, big bro, have a seat. I promise I’ll tell you everything I know, holding nothing back!"
"Alright." Chen Chong sat down. After a moment of thought, he got straight to the point: "I want to know which groups have formed in the school, how many people are in them, and who they are..."
