Chapter 404: Chapter 404: The God-Gifted One

The scene was silent, everyone staring at the gun in Reid’s hand, but ultimately the muzzle remained motionless, as if there were no bullets in the chamber at all.

"Empty gun?" someone murmured softly.

"How is that possible..." others immediately refuted, "This isn’t some roulette game; I watched him fill the cylinder!"

Fermi squinted, "I’m an official agent of the Mechanism, what you said is nonsense. Is it a barefaced threat?"

"Of course not a threat, it’s my most genuine thought." Reid smiled coldly, "Precisely because it’s so accurate, the gun wouldn’t fire."

"Give me the gun," Abigail said.

She took the gun, pointed it at herself, and pulled the trigger, "I would approve of his method."

The gun still didn’t fire.

"Now, it’s your turn to prove yourself." Abigail handed the gun over.

"What an absurd farce..." Fermi shook his head in disbelief, as the head of the intelligence team, he certainly understood what the other’s "care" meant.

"Whether it’s a farce depends on your result." She said faintly.

No matter what the other party was saying, the hostility never dissipated.

"I’m really fed up, let’s end this quickly." Fermi grabbed the gun, "I’ll say it again, I am absolutely not a member of the Evangelical Association; I have no connection with them whatsoever!"

He viciously pulled the trigger.

The gun did not fire.

Fermi was slightly stunned, then glared angrily at Abigail, "How about that! Now you full—"

"Bang!"

The flame erupted from the muzzle interrupted his impassioned speech. The crowd was shocked to see that the handgun, clearly set aside, suddenly discharged, and the angle, logically, couldn’t have hit Fermi. But in this impossibility, the intelligence team leader’s left temple had a noticeable bullet wound — the bullet entered from the right side and exited from the left, the massive force knocking Fermi off the stage, blood and brain matter even splattered onto the people in the first row.

All agents were dumbfounded.

Really... dead?

An old veteran who had served the organization for so many years just died like this, without any trial, in the division’s large conference hall?

Head Captain Randa stared complexly at Abigail, his fists repeatedly loosening and tightening... He had imagined many possibilities, but never imagined she would dare to kill someone right in front of him, especially the head of a department.

Even if Fermi really was a mole, he shouldn’t be dealt with so rashly!

Moreover, they couldn’t produce any evidence.

Despite Reid emphasizing his capability being recognized by headquarters, who knows if headquarters does indeed shelter their own? If an agent sent by them can decide to kill a division leader without showing any evidence, who can guarantee they aren’t the next sacrifice?

This feeling of unease quickly spread, the hall not filled with any relief of finding the mole, but rather doubts and suspicions about the disciplinary team.

The tense emotions were like a bowstring, now drawn to the limit, only needing a slight nudge for the grudges between the division and headquarters to explode into a furious confrontation.

Abigail was well aware of the situation at this moment. Of course, she knew Reid’s ability couldn’t discern truth from falsehood, but even if her deputy could, how many would understand this practice?

They would only feel fear.

As for the competition between the Evangelical Association and the Dimensional Limit Mechanism, whether the Mechanism could overcome future enemies... these major issues become insignificant in the face of personal fear.

Therefore, finding the breakthrough target is just the first step.

Abigail stretched out her hands, calmly removed her blindfold.

The crowd collectively gasped, this action looked like battle preparation from every angle.

"Calm down!" The head captain shouted, "Abigail, what are you doing——"

His words were cut short, as the astonishing scene unfolded in front of him!

The blood and brain matter splattered on the clothes and floor floated upward, flying into the air! At the same time, the intelligence team leader lying on the ground re-standing, the bullet wound on the head right in the path of the blood’s return, as if the two deliberately converged there!

"Time reverted!?" A disbelieving whisper arose from the crowd.

Others only now came to their senses; wasn’t the scene before them just like a movie rewind?

When all the splattered materials entered Fermi’s head, the dark gun wound was also precisely filled, reverting him to his pre-shot state.

Fermi Naren swayed twice, eyes blankly staring at the stage below, as if just waking from a long dream.

Everyone clearly saw, without anyone’s aid, he stood on the stage relying entirely on his own legs.

"You... aren’t dead?" Randa approached, tentatively patting him.

The latter had little response to the greeting.

"He cannot speak now, soulless syndrome will last a long time, up to a month." Abigail explained, "But during that time, his remaining life will be spent in the headquarters jail, there’s no need to worry how long he’ll be soulless."

"Soul... soulless syndrome?"

"This is the cost of resurrection, but it’s better than dying, isn’t it?" She smiled.

The scene erupted in noise.

Fermi indeed remained alive, which was the result everyone saw. He was breathing, had a heartbeat, could stand, his eyes moved around... Aside from his gaze being a bit vacant, he was almost indistinguishable from a living person.

Such miraculous ability; they had never heard of it before!

"God-given... Abigail?" Randa murmured in a voice only he could hear; he now understood the weight behind this title.

"Now is the time to gather evidence of his crimes." Abigail said loudly, ensuring her voice reached everyone’s ears, "I demand that you conduct a thorough investigation of Fermi Naren, his computer, phone, residence, safes... Anything suspicious must be immediately reported. To prevent any accomplices, the Execution Team, Logistics Team, and Intelligence Team should conduct joint operations, specific arrangements handled by Chief Captain Randa."

She turned to Randa, "Any issues?"

"Yes... yes." He nodded as if awakening from a dream, "Rest assured, I know what to do."

The resistant icy blue faded away.

It hadn’t completely vanished, but compared to the initial icy blue sea, the emotions in the hall had undoubtedly warmed much more—the warm orange represented acknowledgment and submission.

This is the human heart.

In a brief moment, people can move from one extreme to another. They acknowledged not killing Fermi, submitting to the power of resurrection.

It’s a pity they didn’t know, there’s no such thing as resurrection.

Abigail put back on her blindfold to prevent those below from detecting her fatigue.

She didn’t refuse to revive the person, but truly couldn’t do it. She could make a flying bullet turn back, make a shattered vase reassemble, or realize some more whimsical things, like turning sky into earth, making balloons heavier than stones.

Humans are also precisely restored—in terms of restoration, the body isn’t much different from a vase, no observational methods, no matter how minute, could detect any damage traces on these restored objects.

But restored people won’t wake up.

They seem as if something is missing.

Soulless syndrome is a term Abigail made up, very fitting, yet hides a truth: its recovery period isn’t a month but never recovering. What stands on stage is merely an empty shell named Fermi.

But what does that matter?

Since he chose to betray the Mechanism, aiding the Evangelical Association in wreaking havoc, he must have anticipated this result.

When he pulled the trigger, he accepted the reality of death, so when finding the gun quiet, he momentarily paused, thinking he had passed the test. But the moment people are closest to success, is often when they are most relaxed, post-disaster joy covering fear’s tremble, but capability wouldn’t miss this emotion’s ripple.

Abigail knew she pointed out the right person.

Now is the time for harvest.
