Chapter 784: A New Duo
A smirk curled at the corner of his lips. "So, if this works, we’ll be walking out of here with a lot more than our freedom."
As Orion finished outlining the rewards, a soft rustling sound drew the group’s attention. A sleek, muscular leopard padded silently into view, its golden eyes locked onto Findir. The creature moved with predatory grace, its spotted coat gleaming faintly in the dim light as it began to circle him. Its tail flicked rhythmically, muscles rippling beneath its fur as it kept its gaze fixed on Findir.
Not far behind, the elf from the night before approached, his movements as smooth and deliberate as his companion’s. His long black hair hung loosely around his sharp features, and his piercing red eyes glinted with something between curiosity and malice. He didn’t say a word, his intense gaze never leaving Findir as he came to a stop a few paces away, watching the leopard complete its quiet circuit.
The elf’s presence alone was enough to send a chill through the air, though Findir remained still, meeting the elf’s stare with his own steady resolve. The rest of the group tensed slightly, instinctively aware of the unspoken tension between the elf and Findir. The elf’s hand rested casually at his side, but the way his fingers flexed slightly made it clear he wasn’t here for idle conversation.
"Take my partner with you," The elf suggested.
The group exchanged puzzled glances as the elf’s serious suggestion hung in the air. Findir looked particularly wary, his previous confidence momentarily shaken by the unexpected offer. The elf’s expression was grave, his red eyes gleaming with a mix of determination and something more inscrutable.
"Take my partner with you," the elf repeated, his tone brooking no argument.
Orion raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical. "Why should we take your leopard?"
The elf continued, his gaze fixed intently on Findir. "This leopard is not just any beast. It can remain in your shadow without hindering your escape in the slightest. It has a unique ability—slight mind control. It can influence other beings depending on their strength."
He paused, allowing the gravity of his words to sink in. "In fact, it’s estimated that my leopard could influence the Orc King to some degree, giving you a better chance of convincing him or swaying the outcome in your favor."
Orion’s expression remained cautious. "Can you prove it?"
The elf gave a curt nod, his eyes flickering with resolve. He turned to his leopard, which was now sitting patiently at his side, and gestured for it to demonstrate its abilities. The leopard rose gracefully, its sleek form moving with silent purpose as it approached one of the frail prisoners huddled in the corner of the cell. The prisoner, a scrawny elf with a haunted look in his eyes, glanced up with a mixture of fear and curiosity.
The leopard’s golden gaze locked onto the prisoner, and an almost imperceptible shift occurred in the air. The prisoner’s posture stiffened unnaturally, and his eyes glazed over with an eerie, vacant expression. Slowly, he rose to his feet, his movements robotic and devoid of any real control. The rest of the group watched in awe and a hint of apprehension as the prisoner spun around in slow, disoriented circles, his face a mask of confusion.
After a few disoriented turns, the prisoner’s body slumped to the ground, the mind control’s grip releasing him. He lay there, dazed and disoriented, struggling to process the sudden return of his own will. His earlier fear was now replaced by a bewildered confusion as he looked around, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
The elf turned back to Orion, his expression a mix of satisfaction and challenge. "As you can see, my leopard’s mind control is quite effective, even on the weakest of beings. The influence it exerts on the Orc King, though less absolute, could still sway his decisions or actions significantly."
Orion’s eyes narrowed as he considered the elf’s demonstration. The display had effectively proven the leopard’s capabilities, but the implications were complex. If the leopard could indeed exert influence over powerful beings like the Orc King, it could tilt the balance in their favor. However, Orion was cautious. The elf’s motivations and the full extent of the leopard’s powers were still uncertain.
"Alright," Orion finally said, his tone measured. "We’ll take your leopard with us. But remember, we’re all in this together. Don’t think for a second that we’ll tolerate any betrayal."
The elf inclined his head slightly, acknowledging the agreement. "Understood. My leopard and I have no intention of betraying you. We have our own reasons for assisting you, and our goals align for now."
With that, the elf gestured for his leopard to follow, the animal moving silently and gracefully back to Findir’s side. The tension in the air eased slightly as the group prepared to set their plan into motion, each member of the team aware of the new dynamic and the potential that the leopard’s abilities could bring to their escape and their ultimate goal.
Orion’s gaze remained fixed on the elf, his suspicion still evident. "Alright, you’ve demonstrated your leopard’s abilities, but I still need to know why you’re willing to help us. What’s in it for you?"
The elf’s piercing red eyes met Orion’s with a glimmer of something akin to sorrow. He took a deep breath as if summoning the strength to share a painful memory. "You want to know why I’m helping you? Very well." His voice was steady, but there was an undercurrent of deep emotion.
"My village—my home—was destroyed by the trolls," he began, his tone heavy with the weight of his past. "It was a beautiful place, nestled in the heart of the elven forests. We lived in peace, away from the conflicts that plagued the outside world. But one day, the trolls came. They swept through our village with a brutality that left nothing but ashes and ruins. I was away on a journey at the time, and when I returned, all I found was devastation."
He paused, his eyes darkening with the recollection. "I lost everything that day—my family, my friends, my entire way of life. I’ve been searching for a way to avenge them ever since. If I can strike back at the trolls, if I can contribute in any way to their downfall, I will."
The elf’s voice grew firmer, a steely resolve replacing the sadness. "Helping you is not just a chance to get revenge; it’s an opportunity to do something meaningful with my life. If I can aid in your escape and help you in your mission, it brings me one step closer to achieving that long-sought justice."
Orion’s expression softened slightly as he absorbed the elf’s story. The depth of the elf’s pain and his motivations were now clearer. It was not just a matter of convenience or mere alliance; there was a deep-seated vendetta driving the elf’s actions.
"I see," Orion said, nodding slowly. "Your reasons are personal, and I understand the drive for vengeance. We’ll take your help and work together, but remember, we’re a team now. Once again I’ll say, betrayal won’t be tolerated."
The elf nodded in agreement, his expression resolute. "Understood. I have no intention of betraying you. Our goals align, and my commitment to this cause is as strong as my desire for revenge."
With that, the elf’s demeanor became more focused, the personal vendetta that had driven him now channeled into a shared purpose. Orion, now aware of the elf’s deeper motivations, could see the potential value of their alliance and the strength of their combined resolve.
Findir turned to face the group, his expression a mixture of resolve and awkwardness. The time had come for him to leave, and he was determined to carry out his part in the plan. He took a deep breath, glancing at each member of the group with a final nod.
"Goodbye, everyone," Findir said, his voice steady despite the tinge of nervousness in his tone. "I’ll see you soon."
When he reached Orion, Findir’s composure faltered just a bit. The transformation he had undergone had left him with a new, unexpected physique. His once-masculine chest was now replaced by a pair of pronounced, feminine curves. As he stood before Orion, he couldn’t help but shift uncomfortably, trying to adjust his stance to compensate for the change.
Orion, noticing Findir’s discomfort, offered a reassuring smile. He stepped forward and pulled Findir into a warm, supportive hug. "Good luck out there. Remember, you’re not alone in this."
Findir’s cheeks flushed slightly at the close contact, and he gave a sheepish grin as he stepped back. "Thanks, Orion. I’ll make sure to get the job done."
With a final nod, Findir turned to leave. The leopard, ever loyal, leaped gracefully into Findir’s shadow, disappearing seamlessly into the darkness. Findir closed his eyes, focusing on the wind magic that would carry him away.
In a swift, fluid motion, Findir’s form began to blur and dissolve. The wind howled gently around him, and within moments, he had transformed into a gust of wind, his silhouette vanishing into the air. The leopard, now a shadowy presence, melded perfectly with Findir’s form as they both slipped away, disappearing into the night.
Orion watched as Findir and the leopard faded from sight, a mixture of admiration and concern in his gaze. The plan was in motion, and now, all they could do was wait and hope that their gambit would pay off.
