Chapter 125: Chapter 125

Elise hesitated for a moment before finally answering the phone.

"Hello?"

There was no response from the other end.

Elise knitted her brows. "Hello?"

Still, the person on the line remained silent.

Wrong number?

Just as she hesitated, about to hang up, a deep voice suddenly broke the silence. "It’s me."

Hearing that voice, Elise froze.

Dylan.

Her expression instantly turned cold. Without a single word, she hung up.

But Dylan refused to give up and called right back. Naturally, Elise didn’t answer. She went straight ahead and blocked the number.

Dylan, however, had clearly anticipated this reaction. A few minutes later, a text message arrived from another unfamiliar number:

’I saw on the news that a typhoon is coming. Go hide out in another city for now. I’ve already arranged for someone to come pick you up.’

Elise blocked that number too.

She wanted nothing to do with Dylan, but she wasn’t about to risk her own safety just out of spite. Even without his warning, she had already planned to leave for another city in the next couple of days to escape the storm.

Yet, Dylan’s little stunt served as a reminder. His people were likely nearby.

Elise narrowed her eyes. So, Dylan has been having me watched all these days?

The realization that her relaxing, peaceful week had actually been spent under his surveillance caused her good mood to vanish instantly.

Just then, Rina called, too.

Elise answered right away. "Hi, Sis."

"Elise, I saw the news," Rina said, her voice grave. "You’re right on the coast, and you’re pregnant. For safety’s sake, don’t you think you should head to another city to avoid the storm for a few days?"

"Yeah, that’s what I was planning," Elise replied, pausing slightly before adding, "I just haven’t decided where to go yet."

On the other end, Rina took a moment to think. "How about this? I have an acquaintance in Rivergate City. Why don’t you stay there for a few days? The scenery is quite nice, and I can have someone show you around."

"Won’t that be too much trouble for your friend?"

"Not at all! She’s a local college student—young, enthusiastic, and perfect for the job."

Elise was left speechless.

"Then it’s settled," Rina continued. "I’ll have someone book your ticket right away. You need to leave as soon as possible. If you wait any longer, I’m afraid all the tourists will try to flee before the typhoon hits, and flights will be impossible to get."

Elise figured that going to Rivergate City was better than staying here under the constant surveillance of Dylan’s men. Accepting Rina’s arrangements, she hung up the phone, packed a light bag, and went downstairs.

Miss Shaw, the guesthouse owner, personally drove Elise to the airport. It was a one-hour drive from the town to the coast.

"Your town is beautiful, Miss Shaw," Elise noted, looking over at her. "But you must take quite a hit every typhoon season, right?"

Steering the car, the woman offered a helpless smile. "Well, that’s life on the coast—there’s no avoiding it. The locals are used to it by now. When I first moved here, I used to be terrified every time a typhoon warning went out. There are losses, sure, but the local government provides support. It’s a bit of a hassle, but over time you just get used to it. Think of it as a way to build mental resilience."

"Have you ever thought about moving to another city?"

"Never," Miss Shaw smiled. "Because I truly love this city. Everything has its pros and cons, after all."

Miss Shaw was originally from North City but had lived in Rainport for five years now.

"If you love the vastness of the ocean, you have to learn to accept its waves. If you love snow, you have to learn to accept the cold it brings. Nothing in this world is truly perfect. Perfection is just a beautiful figment of human imagination—it’s an illusion. Imperfection is the actual baseline of life."

Imperfection is the actual baseline of life.

Elise turned Miss Shaw’s words over in her mind. After a moment, her lips curled into a smile. "Well said, Miss Shaw. I should learn from you."

"We win some, we lose some in this life. Just keep a level head!" the woman glanced at Elise and smiled. "You know, Miss Harper, you strike me as someone with a real story."

Elise raised an eyebrow. "You can tell just by looking?"

"Haven’t you heard?" Miss Shaw laughed. "They say those of us who run guesthouses have an eye for spotting a good story."

Elise gave a slight smirk. "That’s a first for me."

"Of course it is," the woman said with a mischievous grin. "Because I just made it up!"

Elise blinked in surprise, then burst out laughing.

All the way to the airport, Miss Shaw kept the conversation flowing, chatting about anything and everything under the sun. The atmosphere was light and easy. Elise found her incredibly engaging, possessing a maturity and serenity that seemed well beyond her years.

At the airport, Miss Shaw parked the car in the underground garage and insisted on helping Elise with the check-in process. Elise hadn’t wanted to trouble her, but the woman was simply too hospitable to refuse. Once her boarding pass was sorted, Elise said her goodbyes at the security checkpoint.

Miss Shaw watched her pass through security before finally turning to leave.

The direct flight from Rainport to Rivergate International Airport took two hours. Probably due to the impending typhoon, the airport was exceptionally crowded today. Elise’s flight was completely full, though there were still a few empty seats in first class.

Finding her seat, Elise sat down. The seat next to hers was empty. She pulled out her phone to send quick messages to Miss Shaw and Rina. Once they were sent, she switched her phone to airplane mode, asked the flight attendant for a blanket, put on her eye mask, and went to sleep.

Elise slept through most of the two-hour flight. Midway through, she was jolted awake by a bout of turbulence. In her dazed state, she felt as though someone had gently pulled her blanket up a bit higher. She couldn’t be entirely sure—it might have just been a dream.

As the turbulence passed, exhaustion washed over her again. She yawned, adjusted her posture to face the window, and drifted back to sleep.

By the time she woke up, the plane was already descending. Elise pulled off her eye mask and sat up. The seat beside her was still empty.

Was it just my imagination?

Ultimately, she didn’t dwell on the minor interlude. The plane touched down smoothly.

The moment Elise stepped off the plane, her phone rang. It was Rina.

"Sis?"

"The girl has already arrived at the airport. She has a baby face and isn’t very tall. I sent her your photo beforehand, so keep an eye out."

"Got it," Elise replied.

After hanging up, she retrieved her luggage. Walking out of the arrivals exit, her eyes immediately locked onto an obnoxiously loud pickup sign bearing her name. It featured a bright red background with neon yellow lettering.

Elise stood frozen. Talk about high profile.

She instinctively pulled the brim of her bucket hat down a little lower, then traced her gaze down from the sign.

The girl holding it was wearing a face mask and a baseball cap.

A baby face? Wrapped up like that, how am I supposed to spot a baby face?

Then again, ’Baby Face’ had clearly anticipated this, which was exactly why she had prepared such an unmistakable sign. It was... pretty clever, actually.

Elise let out a quiet laugh and walked over to her.

Seeing her approach, the girl’s eyes lit up. "Hello! Are you Miss Harper?"

Elise smiled. "Hello. I’m Elise Harper."

"Hi, Elise! It’s so great to meet you!" The girl quickly lowered the sign and enthusiastically extended her hand.

"Let me introduce myself—I’m Kaia Lawrence. Your sister filled me in on everything. Don’t you worry, Elise, I’ll be showing you around Rivergate these next few days. I guarantee you’ll have a wonderful time!"
