Chapter 118: Chapter 118
The man’s voice was deep—he always possessed a rich, magnetic baritone. If a voice like that were used to whisper sweet nothings, it could easily coax any woman into a state of sheer bliss.
Unfortunately, that voice belonged to Dylan.
And it was destined to be entirely wasted.
Looking at Dylan, noting the absolute certainty and confidence shining in his eyes, Elise suddenly couldn’t help but ask herself: Why on earth was I so stubbornly obsessed with loving this man in the past?
In truth, he wasn’t even all that extraordinary.
Once the lens of love was stripped away, Elise realized she could finally face Dylan without a trace of sorrow or anger. The turbulent emotions in her heart seemed to vanish completely into thin air in an instant.
She looked at Dylan and smiled, though the warmth never reached her eyes.
"Dylan, you’ve said so much, but what exactly are you trying to prove here?"
Dylan froze.
"If you’re trying to prove your charm, there’s really no need to fixate solely on me. I admit, you are very charming. Your wonderful sister-in-law, Quinn, and countless other women in North City are all perfectly willing to be yours."
"Elise!" Dylan barked coldly. "I am your husband. Do you think it’s appropriate for you to say something like that?"
Elise arched a delicate brow. "A soon-to-be ex-husband on a divorce countdown, you mean."
Dylan’s jaw tightened rigidly, his gaze boring into Elise as if he wanted to swallow her alive. "Elise, provoking me right now will do you no good."
"Oh, whatever you say," Elise replied indifferently, looking completely unbothered. "Anyway, I can’t get through to you. Talking to you is a complete waste of breath."
Dylan stared at her, momentarily at a loss.
Compared to her fighting back, Elise’s dismissive, indifferent attitude left Dylan completely unable to cope. He would have preferred it if she had thrown a massive tantrum. Yet, as if she had suddenly seen right through his thoughts, Elise deliberately chose to do the exact opposite just to spite him.
"Elise, don’t think that just because you’re pregnant, I have no way of dealing with you."
To his surprise, Elise turned her head and looked him dead in the eye upon hearing this. "What? Are you planning to use force against a pregnant woman?"
Dylan gritted his teeth, the veins on his forehead bulging. "Elise, is that really the kind of person I am in your eyes?"
Elise let out a cold scoff. "Then I must have misunderstood you. Since that’s not your intention, could you please let go of me now? You’re a soon-to-be father for the second time, so you should know that a pregnant woman’s sleep schedule is very important. I am exhausted right now. If you don’t let me go to bed, it counts as pregnancy mistreatment."
Dylan pressed his thin lips into a tight line, his eyes locked furiously onto Elise.
Elise raised a hand to cover her mouth, letting out a yawn with an impatient expression. "Dylan, can you just be decisive for once? If we’re not doing anything, let me go. I’m really sleepy."
She was clearly baiting him on purpose!
Yet, to his utter frustration, Dylan realized he had absolutely no leverage against this version of Elise. After a tense moment, he finally backed down and released his grip.
The moment he let go, Elise immediately distanced herself from him. "I’m going to sleep, and please do not disturb me again."
She walked to the side of the bed, pulled back the covers, and nimbly climbed in. Slipping on her earplugs and eye mask, she lay down on her side. After adjusting the duvet, she settled into a comfortable position and fell completely still.
Dylan stood rooted to the spot, watching her in silence.
He didn’t believe it. He refused to believe that Elise could actually fall asleep right after they had just had an argument! How could she truly not care at all?
However, Dylan was swiftly proven wrong.
In the quiet room, the faint, steady sound of Elise’s even breathing could soon be heard. She had actually fallen asleep. The main lights in the room hadn’t even been turned off yet, but Elise had truly drifted off just like that!
Dylan felt as though a clump of cotton was stuffed in his chest, making it difficult to breathe. In the past, whenever they argued, Elise was always the one to actively initiate communication. How did things end up like this...
Looking at Elise, who was now fast asleep on the bed, Dylan felt a wave of confusion regarding their relationship and their future for the very first time.
Time ticked away, minute by minute. Dylan couldn’t remember how long he had been standing there. It wasn’t until a wave of stiffness and numbness washed over his legs that he snapped out of his daze.
The fast-asleep Elise rolled over, turning her back to Dylan. The blanket slipped down slightly with her movement.
Dylan parted his lips, ultimately letting out a heavy sigh. He stepped forward, bent down, and gently pulled the duvet back up, tucking her in. Elise slept very peacefully. Dylan looked at her sleeping face, his eyes filled with a complex swirl of emotions.
. . .
In the middle of the night, Elise was woken up by the urge to use the restroom.
When she pulled off her eye mask, she noticed that the main lights in the room had already been turned off, leaving only a dim nightlight glowing by the bedside. The room was deathly quiet, and Dylan was no longer there.
She threw back the covers and got out of bed, supporting her slightly aching lower back as she walked to the bathroom. Five minutes later, she climbed back into bed, pulled up the covers, closed her eyes, and drifted straight back to sleep.
By the time she woke up again, it was already ten o’clock the next morning.
Elise checked the time, sat up in bed for a moment to clear her head, and then threw off the covers to wash up.
When Elise came downstairs, the first floor was surprisingly quiet.
Noticing her, Mrs. Lander immediately hurried over. "You’re awake, Madam! Shall I bring out your breakfast now?"
"Yes, please." Elise offered her a small smile and walked over to the dining room.
She sat down at the table, and Mrs. Lander emerged from the kitchen, placing the bird’s nest soup in front of her.
"Mrs. Lander, did everyone go out?"
"Well..." the woman hesitated for a moment before answering truthfully. "When Robin woke up this morning and couldn’t find the eldest young mistress, he started crying and throwing a tantrum, throwing a fit to see his mom. The master took Robin out; they probably went over to the Orchard Villa."
Elise nodded, then asked, "What time did Fleur leave?"
"I’m not quite sure. When I got up at six this morning, she was already gone."
Hearing this, Elise raised a brow. Everyone was gone, leaving her with some peace and quiet. This wasn’t bad at all.
As for Fleur, Elise could roughly guess that she was probably plotting some new, underhanded scheme. However, she didn’t particularly care. Fleur’s methods were entirely too cheap and beneath her; getting entangled in them would only make herself look foolish.
As Mrs. Lander went to the kitchen to fetch fresh bread, Elise sat alone at the dining table, sipping her bird’s nest soup. Perhaps because it was quiet enough, she actually found the soup tasted much better today than usual.
Just as she was thoroughly enjoying her breakfast, the sound of a car arrived from outside. Elise paused mid-movement. In the next second, heavy footsteps echoed from the entrance, approaching rapidly.
Elise set her spoon down and turned her head to look at the newcomer.
Dylan’s face was terrifyingly cold, his long legs moving like a whirlwind as he strode straight toward her. Elise remained perfectly calm, watching his approach.
Dylan stared down at her, his face red with anger. "What exactly did you say to my sister-in-law last night?"
Seeing Dylan’s grim countenance, Elise instantly deduced that Fleur must have pulled off another one of her stunts.
"What did your precious sister-in-law tell you this time?"
"My sister-in-law left in the middle of the night. Mrs. Walsh said that the moment she got back to the Orchard Villa, she locked herself in her room and wouldn’t stop crying. You clearly know she suffers from depression, so why did you have to deliberately trigger her?"
Elise’s lips curved into a chilling, sarcastic smile. "She was the one dressed so provocatively, yet she blames me for taking photos that triggered her?"
"Elise!" Dylan lunged forward, grabbing her wrist in a vice grip.
Elise felt a sharp flash of pain in her wrist. Before she could even begin to struggle, Dylan’s furious voice thundered through the room,
"Fleur attempted suicide!"
