Chapter 302: Four Little Words
As they walked, Valerie gave them each a pair of Source Remnants from her shadow, so that they could get some last minute powering up. It was the one time that her slow pace thanks to her cane was actually useful, because it meant more time to power level.
They didn’t even have to focus all that much on where they were going. The Monument might not have been as big as the mega towers, but it was tall enough that it peaked over most buildings. Plus, there were plenty of other people heading towards it, like Moths to a flame, so they simply let themselves be carried by the current of people.
"So how much do you think we will be changed when the time comes?" Lucy asked as they walked, although most of her attention was on the Shadow Demon in her arms. She was giving him constant face and head rubs that were causing a constant, chainsaw-like purring noise to come from the adorable demon.
"My aura is a little weak because I’ve been avoiding eating those ’Essence of Sin’s until I am a real demon. I think that’s when I can be sure they are safe."
"That’s a good idea," Valerie agreed, glaring at the fluffy little traitor for a few seconds, before looking forwards and losing herself in thought.
"I don’t think you will become exactly like your character. I am similar to Belladonna, but not exactly. I have a hunger she doesn’t, and it doesn’t look like I have access to my transformations either. But the regeneration is definitely in play."
"So I won’t grow big and strong, but I will grow horns?" Lucy pouted, looking strangely disappointed.
"If I had to guess. Oh, you might change colour too." Valerie added, before glancing at Jason. She leaned close to Lucy as she whispered,
"I bet he will get the ears and tail. He’ll be so fluffy."
The two girls glanced at him at the same time, simultaneously imagining a pair of fluffy white ears sprouting from the top of Jason’s head. They immediately broke out into laughter, whispering to each other how much they think he will change, whilst Jason simply walked alongside them with a content smile on his face.
He was already thinking about the same thing, and he was already looking forward to it.
Eventually, after some idle conversation and a long wait in the line, they arrived at the Monument of Power and headed inside.
Jason headed over to the reception desk that was specifically for those who had made appointments before hand, something that many of the excitable and eager forwent in order to get here faster and wait in a long line, which left the girls to check out the lists etched into the wall.
In reality the walls the lists existed on were formed by nanobots. Small machines that could be programmed into certain shapes or structures.
That meant that, although the list looked like it was permanently etched into the wall, it could constantly change and shift at the will of the bots.
The individual rankings were still rapidly changing, except for the top five, which had the names of certain Beta testers permanently etched into place. For now.
Valerie smirked as she looked away from Revenant’s name and over to the guild rankings. That one was a little more stable, partly because most people were not in guilds, and partly because the fact it took averages, landing most people off of the list.
A small smile brushed across her lips as she stared up at the name ’Golden Princes’ etched into the number one position, followed up by a few of the other more popular guilds that were ran by the same Beta testers topping the rankings.
Prince of Stars might have been the runner up when it came to the individual rankings, which caused a stir in many of his fans, but that guild spot was undoubtedly always going to be his. Until Valerie got involved.
Still, it was a shame that he couldn’t join them and had to stay with his own people instead.
Valerie couldn’t help but let out a wistful sigh, which immediately caught the attention of Lucy. She whipped her head to the side so fast she nearly snapped it, and coiled her arm around Valerie’s like a python, locking them together.
"So, got the hots for the Prince, hmm?" She asked with a sly smile and a wriggle of her eyebrows.
"What?! N-No! I... I just... No! W-what?! Where did you get that idea?" Valerie stuttered, her voice catching in her throat as she choked on it. God, why did it suddenly get so hot in here?
"Ah, you totally do~" Lucy teased with a giggle, poking Valerie’s side a few times while loving the particular shade of scarlet that Valerie’s face was turning. It was a colour that was only beaten by the intense crimson that her ears had shifted to.
It seemed that Vampires really could blush.
"N-no I... Don-" Valerie’s words caught in her throat again, but not for the same reason as before. Before it was panic. She was desperate to find the right words and decided to just spit them all out at once and hope for the best, which got them stuck in a lump.
But this time, she knew exactly what she wanted to say. ’I don’t like Percy.’
It was a simple phrase. Four little words, it was all she needed to say. But she just couldn’t bring herself to say them.
Four little words was all she needed to say, yet no matter how much she tried, they just refused to come out. So she tried four others, which slipped out with such ease that it actually felt good for them to be out.
"Yes, I like Percy." Valerie admitted with a bashful smile, her eyes focused on a particular point on the ground.
"In fact... " She added nervously, brushing her hair out of her face and looking up at Lucy, who was leaning even closer with eyes sparkling with anticipation, "When we last saw each other. We might have... kissed. Just a little bit."
Lucy let out a high pitched squee of joy as she bounced excitedly, clinging to Valerie’s arm tighter, before breaking out into a crazed giggle of barely restrained happiness. She was trying desperately to keep the creepy, overly happy smile from her face, but she didn’t do too good of a job.
"You are so going to tell me all about it!"
"Tell you all about what?" Jason asked as he approached with a confused frown, glancing between the two girls who were acting incredibly strange and suspiciously.
"Nothing that concerns you. Girl stuff, that is all." Lucy replied with a smug smile, turning her nose up at her fiance. She took one of the tokens from Jason’s hand, which allowed them to go off to the examination, before walking off ahead and exchanging hushed whispers and giggles with Valerie as they walked arm and arm.
Jason pouted slightly, watching their backs with confused and sad eyes, when he heard a soft meow from beside him.
When he looked down, he couldn’t help but smile as Beans sat in front of him, a paw pressed against his leg in expectation.
"Aww, Well at least you still care about me." He cooed with a smile, crouching down to pat Beans on the head. However the cat immediately leaned forwards, plucking Valerie’s token from his hand, before turning and strutting off. Leaving Jason crouched down, his hand still extended to pat the fluffy head that was no longer there.
At least he was in the perfect position to pick the pieces of his shattered heart up from the floor.
