Chapter 160: Chapter 148: She Doesn’t Believe Alex Would Treat Her as a Mimic Mixed Species
Gu Ning followed Kloer out of the building, with Seth and a small pack of wolves trailing behind them.
Jite had injured his leg and stayed behind. If anything happened, Seth and the others could just howl to send a message, and Jite could help handle the situation.
Jite had been against Kloer taking Gu Ning out of the room in the first place. Alex’s order was to watch over the little Mixed Breed and not let any outsiders near it.
But seeing how frantic Gu Ning was to see Alex, he had no choice but to let it go out with Kloer.
They had been with it for so long but had almost never seen it in such an agitated state.
If Alex hadn’t specifically ordered them not to use any drugs on it without reason, they would have considered giving it a shot of Inhibitor.
Now, whether Gu Ning was a Dwarf hybrid or a Mimic Mixed Species, all they could do was placate it and prevent it from losing control of its emotions.
It was six in the morning. The sky outside was still dark, but the surrounding area was brightly lit.
After the power came back on, the lights at the construction site had not been turned off. Every lamp that could be lit was on. However, Gu Ning noticed there were far fewer Beastmen on patrol; she wasn’t sure if they had gone to rest.
Gu Ning walked to the edge of the steps at the building’s entrance and stopped, raising her wrist to check her terminal. Barto hadn’t replied to her.
When the power was restored, she had sent Barto numerous messages, but he hadn’t replied. The calls she made to him and Cook also failed to connect. Alex was unreachable as well.
Gu Ning closed her terminal, her heart heavy with worry.
The network was back, but it wasn’t very stable. Maybe they just hadn’t received her messages.
Gu Ning comforted herself this way, not daring to imagine what Cook and the others might be going through right now.
Kloer looked down at Gu Ning, leaning slightly toward her and sniffing the scent on her.
It was all the familiar scents of various wolf pups and puppies, but none of its own scent.
He remembered when he first met Gu Ning, it liked to spray all sorts of random Beast Smell Agents on itself. Later, after it moved in with Alex, it always smelled like Alex.
At that thought, realization dawned on him. ’So the first signs of Little Gu Ning’s identity were apparent even back then.’
At first, he hadn’t paid much attention to the little Mixed Breed. After they got to know it better, he’d made a few wild guesses, but Alex never said anything explicit. Plus, he was so busy he barely had time to sleep, so he didn’t give its identity any more thought and just assumed it was a member of Alex’s wolf pack.
’To think that it’s...’
Kloer’s thoughts were a tangled mess. While he silently observed the little Mixed Breed’s behavior, unwilling to believe it was a Mimic Mixed Species, a part of him thought, ’High-level Mimic Mixed Species are this terrifying? They can fool us completely without even showing their faces.’
The idea surfaced in his mind for a moment before he immediately smacked his head to stop his wild thoughts. ’Little Gu Ning isn’t necessarily the Mimic Mixed Species Lanuo mentioned. I have to ask Alex first.’
Gu Ning caught a glimpse of Kloer sniffing at her, and his undisguised expression made her scoff inwardly.
Although Kloer didn’t show any disgust or distance toward her, she keenly sensed the subtle change in how he and Jite treated her after concluding she was a Mimic Mixed Species.
Most Beastmen were emotionally transparent, wearing their feelings on their faces. The only exception was someone like Barto, who had a complete fox-like face; when he wasn’t speaking, it was hard to read his expression.
She could only pretend she didn’t know anything. Everything would have to wait until she found Cook and Barto.
"The snow is too deep. I’ll carry you."
Kloer said, reaching to pick up Gu Ning, but Seth came over and nudged him aside.
Seth lay down in front of Gu Ning and nudged her with his snout, gesturing for her to climb onto his back.
Gu Ning sized Seth up. Seeing that he was treating her the same as always, she calmed herself, grabbed his fur, and climbed onto his back.
"Let’s go, let’s go." Kloer scanned the area. Seeing that the Military Department’s wolves weren’t around, he hopped onto one of the other wolves and urged Seth and the pack onward.
Seth sniffed the air for Alex’s scent and took off in that direction.
As he ran, Seth sighed to himself. ’The boss is probably going to chew me out for this.’
’The boss said to watch the little boss and not let it leave the room, but here we are, taking it to find him.’
Despite this thought, he ran extremely fast. He wanted Gu Ning to see Alex as soon as possible so it could finally be at ease.
Gu Ning gripped the fur on Seth’s back with one hand and held on tightly to her wind-whipped shawl with the other.
Heavy snow had started falling again outside. The cold wind whipped snowflakes down her neck, scattering her body heat and chilling her skin, but it also managed to calm Gu Ning’s frantic and anxious heart.
She had to ask Alex herself what was going on. She refused to believe that Alex would mistake her for a Mimic Mixed Species.
Just like during the day, Seth and the others started running up the simple staircase along the side of the high wall. They had only climbed about a third of the way up when they were stopped by a squad of Beastmen.
The staircase along the wall wasn’t very wide, only able to fit two beast-form wolves side-by-side at most. The squad of Beastmen had more than a dozen beast-form wolves behind them, so Seth couldn’t get past and had to skid to a halt.
He bared his teeth slightly and backed away as two of his companions swapped places with him, moving to block the front.
"What unit are you with?" the lead Beastman asked, his expression grim as he sized up Seth’s group.
When Gu Ning saw them being blocked, she immediately dropped down and buried herself in Seth’s thick fur, trying to hide.
Kloer spoke up, "We’re with Alex. Please let us through."
Hearing the name "Alex," the lead Beastman frowned. "Don’t you know the order came down from above? No one is allowed on or off the wall. Didn’t Alex inform you?"
Kloer and the wolf next to him exchanged a look. They really hadn’t known.
"Alex’s men have no discipline whatsoever. I don’t know how he usually manages his pack," a Beastman sneered.
"Running wild during the day is one thing, but to keep running around after an order has been issued... I don’t think Alex should even be a pack leader if he can’t even control a few of his wolves."
"And he wants to join the Military Department? He should be sent to the military district to repair our electric fences."
Hearing the taunts and sarcasm from this wolf pack, Seth and his companions let out displeased growls.
Gu Ning peeked forward. The bright floodlights on the wall illuminated the Beastmen and the wolf pack behind them completely. She looked up along the winding staircase; the flights above were also packed with unfamiliar wolves. Forcing their way through was practically impossible.
Seeing the situation, Kloer and the others also had the thought of retreating.
The main issue was that they had the little Mixed Breed with them. It wasn’t a good idea to start a conflict here; a fight wouldn’t get them anywhere.
Gu Ning clenched her fists tightly. Her thoughts raced for a few moments, and she decided she had to find another way. She couldn’t let Seth and the others fight with this group of Beastmen.
She reached out and patted Seth’s head, signaling for him to leave.
Seth hesitated for a moment, but unwilling to disappoint Gu Ning, he chose to— "AWOOO..."
He threw his head back and howled for Alex.
’If I get yelled at, so be it. It’s better than fighting the Military Department’s pack or just being stuck here.’
As soon as he howled, his other companions started howling too.
Hearing their reckless calls, the expressions of the Wolf Clan Beastmen blocking them turned even uglier.
"Shut up! What are you howling for!"
"We’re on a mission! Shut up and get lost!"
They roared, as the wolf packs behind and above them also bared their teeth and growled warnings. For a moment, the wall was filled with a cacophony of noise.
Seth: "AWOO! AWOO! AWOO!" *Let us pass!*
The lead Beastman was getting a massive headache. Just as he was thinking about using force to drive them down, he sensed his own leader approaching from behind. His expression froze, and he and his companions stepped aside to make way.
"Who told you to come here?"
