Chapter 82: Mosquito Journey
Two weeks, it’s neither too long nor too short. With the thought that the mosquitoes might have also grown, Kain went on a small mission.
He didn’t bring anyone with him, nor did he say why he was leaving.
He went out for three days. When he came back, he disappeared again after entering the penthouse. All floor matters were left to Amelia. The sensitive ones noticed the change, but didn’t question it.
At most, the hunter team asked Jake and Veronica, who had the most interaction with them, for some information.
The only information they got was that they should find more time to meditate.
As for Marcus, he had chosen the hunting team.
When he joined, he realized the power he thought made him strong was not something unique to him. All the hunters could use it.
It was no surprise to him that Amelia and Kain were also Awakened.
He only breathed a sigh of relief when he learned that not everyone in the building is meditating.
After a week, Kain finally appeared.
"Finally, I thought you would never leave. You and the kids left me here all alone." She looked like she had suffered a great grievance.
"Don’t worry. You’re going in next." Kain gave her a cheeky grin. "The kids and I have been training."
He materialized a bone sword. The blade was nearly three feet long and slightly curved. The surface was off-white with thin veins faintly visible under the surface. The hilt was wrapped in a layered strip of leather. A piece of bone was shaped into a guard.
"You can use this for a while. When you start using the elements, you can channel it into the sword." Kain handed the sword to her reverently.
Amelia looked at the sword, completely at a loss for words. She only mentioned the mosquitoes might be a bit large, and he took it so seriously.
Her eyes welled up with unshed tears. She was truly moved.
She smiled and asked, "What about you?"
Another sword appeared in Kain’s hand. When Amelia saw it, she couldn’t help but gasp. She had expected a similar sword to hers.
Hers was like a katana. Kain’s was a broadsword.
The blade was wide, nearly a foot, tapering to a rounded point. The surface was rougher than the katana, and the veins were prominently shown. The blade was just as sharp as the katana, almost gleaming.
The hilt was built to handle the weight. It was fat. There was more leather wrapping on this hilt in contrast to the katana. The whole weapon was heavy.
It was a beautiful sword; there’s no denying it.
Amelis didn’t expect Kain to make a broadsword for himself. She had always pictured the kind of people who use a broadsword to be overly muscular, swinging and hacking at things.
Kain stood grinning with the broadsword in his hand. He had created the weapons especially for himself and Amelia. The children also had their share.
But the ones for them weren’t as equisitely made as they were still growing and would eventually outgrow such small weapons.
Other tools were made for those who may be fighting with them later.
As Kain admired the sword, he said, "I spent those few days tracking down a high-level mutant fish. It had almost started evolving, which is why the veins can channel Source Energy.
It took some time, but it was worth it."
He didn’t mention the fact that he was injured. She didn’t need to know that. She only needed to know that he came back safely.
As she listened, her eyes lit up. This was her man. The man who went out of his way to make her something he knew she would love.
More than anything, she thought he looked handsome holding the broadsword. Her body reacted before her brain could.
After a week apart, the couple rekindled their relationship.
As for the mosquitoes, the couple was getting ready to fight. They were moving at a leisurely pace.
Amelia had been correct; the mosquitoes had indeed grown. From their tiny bodies, they have now grown into massive avengers.
The body is approximately three feet long from head to tail. The body is long, low, and flattened. The exoskeleton is translucent in certain areas.
Through the shell, the internal structure is visible. The legs are too long for the body. At a section, they are bent backwards like a spider, making them scuttle.
The skull is flattened and widened into a hammerhead shape. The eyes are the size of golf balls. The wings are large but incredibly thin.
The tail is hook-like. In its mouth, there is a paralytic agent that makes its prey immobile for five minutes, so the large needle-like structure can enter the body to take the blood it needs.
Currently, the lazy mosquitoes are quite some distance away.
They are enjoying a nice morning meal. The sounds of buzzing can be heard.
"I like this one," one mosquito said. "It’s rich and creamy."
The mosquito was holding a young woman. Her eyes were wide open in terror. She wanted to scream but couldn’t.
The mosquito nearby decided to have a taste.
"Yes, definitely rich and creamy. Let’s finish this one. See if we can find another like it."
The rich and creamy woman was, in fact, an Awakener.
There were other human beings in the vicinity. They were watching in horror as the mosquitoes took lives. These were the few safe ones.
The others had all fallen prey to the mosquitoes’ thirst for the rich and creamy blood.
In an inconspicuous building, a man crouched, waiting for the mosquitoes to leave. The moment he was sure the massive things had gone, he sent out a broadcast.
He wasn’t sure how far the signal would go, but at least he wanted to let others know that the mosquitoes have mutated. Sharing his story would ensure that others might be able to avoid it.
The message of the mosquitoes spread through the airways, finally reaching Kain and the others almost a week after Kain had shown Amelia the swords.
