Chapter 267: Chapter: 266 Dinner and sad story.[3]
"You see, we were from the Eastreach Continent, and our families belonged to the lower ranks of nobility."
Kavin let out a slow sigh as a nostalgic look appeared on his face. His gaze drifted toward the crimson moon hanging above the rooftop, as though he were staring across countless years into the past.
In truth, it had not even been that long ago. Sometimes it still felt as though he had been sitting inside his luxurious noble residence only yesterday, surrounded by servants and enjoying a comfortable life without a care in the world.
"Alas..."
A faint smile appeared on his face before disappearing just as quickly.
"My full name is Kavin Moonblade, and Jasmine’s full name is Jasmine Zagrose. She is descended from the ninety-ninth son of our ancestor, while I am descended from the one hundred and twenty-fifth daughter."
He gently swirled the wine inside his glass before continuing.
"You might not know our noble families. We were never particularly influential or competent compared to the greater branches. We possessed some status, but not enough for anyone important to pay attention to us."
Magnus and Salena listened attentively.
Even Jasmine found herself staring at him with admiration.
It was honestly astonishing.
Every word he said sounded genuine, every expression appeared natural.
When she acted, she usually relied on real memories. If she needed to appear sad, she would think about her mother’s death.
If she needed to feel anger, she would remember her father. Even then, she often felt awkward and forced.
Kavin, however, was different.
He did not merely pretend, he became the character.
The slight hesitation in his voice, the bitterness hidden behind his smile, the way his eyes occasionally lost focus as though he were recalling painful memories, everything appeared completely real.
Jasmine struggled to describe it. Even specialists who spent their lives studying deception could not possibly act this naturally.
If there truly existed a God of Acting somewhere in the heavens, then Kavin would undoubtedly be sitting upon that throne.
’I wish I was half as good as him.’ The thought appeared in her mind as she quietly listened.
"Our families were quite close," Kavin continued. "As a result, we became engaged when we were sixteen."
His expression slowly darkened. The change was subtle, so subtle that it appeared completely natural.
In reality, Kavin was carefully guiding the conversation toward the tragedy that would explain everything.
What made his story terrifyingly convincing was that it was not entirely fabricated.
He understood that pure lies were dangerous. If suspicion ever fell upon them in the future, lies could unravel under enough scrutiny.
Truth was, however, different.
Therefore, he mixed truth with fiction. The events had happened, the emotions were real. Only the names and identities had changed.
"One day, the young master of the Valor Family saw Jasmine." His grip tightened around the wine glass.
The muscles in his jaw visibly clenched.
A rush of anger appeared on his face so naturally that even Jasmine nearly believed he was reliving the event.
Across the table, Magnus and Salena remained silent. They knew exactly who the Valor Family was.
The rulers of Eastreach. The descendants of the Third Son of the Ancestor. A family whose influence spread across the entire continent.
Neither of them needed further explanation to understand what likely came next.
Still, they listened quietly.
"They demanded that Jasmine become his concubine."
Kavin’s voice grew heavier. "We refused."
His eyes lowered toward the table. "But the young master of the Valor Clan did not care about our answer."
The rooftop fell silent. Only the distant sound of water rippling across the pool could be heard.
"They slaughtered our families." A bitter smile appeared on his face. "My relatives. Her relatives. Everyone." His fingers slowly tightened around the stem of his wine glass.
"Only Jasmine, my father, and I survived."
For a brief moment his voice seemed to waver.
The effect was devastatingly convincing.
"Even then, we were not truly saved. My father sacrificed himself to send us here, to Heartreach. By the time we arrived, we had lost everything."
His gaze drifted toward Jasmine. "We were young. Alone. Homeless. We had no backing, no resources, and no one willing to help us."
A faint laugh escaped him, though there was no amusement behind it. "So we cultivated. We struggled. We survived however we could."
His expression became increasingly bitter.
"In the hope of obtaining revenge someday, we eventually created the Fearless Couple Union Bandit Group."
Magnus nearly choked on his drink.
"We finally began rebuilding our lives," Kavin continued. "Then even that was taken away from us."
Silence followed.
Magnus stared at the couple, Salena stared at them as well, neither knew what to say.
Especially Salena.
The more she listened, the heavier her heart became. She had originally intended to discuss recruitment and cooperation.
Now she felt ashamed for even thinking about it. These two had lost their families.
They had lost their home, they had crossed continents while still young. They had spent years struggling to survive.
Then, after finally finding happiness, they had even lost their child. The weight of such suffering was difficult to imagine.
Salena could not help wondering whether she would have broken long ago if she had experienced even half of what they endured.
A feeling of discomfort settled inside her chest. Whatever she had planned to ask suddenly felt inappropriate.
At least not now.
Magnus, however, reached a completely different conclusion. Unlike Salena, he saw something else hidden beneath the tragedy.
Revenge.
The desire for revenge was one of the strongest motivations a spell caster could possess.
If the couple truly wanted vengeance against the Valor Family, then there would never be a better opportunity to recruit them.
His expression gradually became serious.
"Kavin."
His voice suddenly broke the silence. Both Kavin and Jasmine looked toward him.
"I won’t beat around the bush."
Salena immediately smacked him across the back.
"Uncle, not now," she whispered urgently.
Magnus ignored her entirely.
"As a man, don’t you want to dig out the eyes of that bastard who dared to look at your woman?" he asked. "Don’t you want to burn the entire Valor Clan to the ground for what they did to your families?"
Kavin opened his mouth. For a moment no words came out.
His expression became extraordinarily complicated, as though grief, hatred, helplessness, and longing had all mixed together.
Inside, however, he was grinning from ear to ear.
’Bingo.’
Salena finally realized what Magnus was doing. After a brief hesitation, she took a deep breath.
Since the opportunity had already appeared, there was no point avoiding the topic any longer.
"I will compete for the position of Sun Family Patriarch," she said firmly.
Everyone turned toward her. The hesitation that had existed earlier was gone.
Only determination remained.
"If you support me," she continued, "then I promise that once I ascend to that position, I will help you obtain your revenge."
The rooftop became silent once more.
The crimson moon reflected across the swimming pool while a gentle breeze passed through the night air.
Kavin remained quiet, Jasmine, as always, remained silent as well.
Magnus patiently waited for an answer. Salena nervously watched the couple.
Several moments passed before Kavin finally leaned back in his chair.
A long sigh escaped his lips.
Then he lowered his gaze toward the wine inside his glass.
"Let me think about it."
