Chapter 144: The Grandfather’s Last Wish: A Terrifying Resolve
Dorrent frowned deeply, his silver eyes clouding with genuine confusion. He looked at her frantic state, unable to comprehend what had just broken her spirit so completely. "What the hell are you talking about, Jannah? I don’t understand a single word coming out of your mouth right now. What did the old man write?"
"How can you stand there and act like you don’t understand?!" Jannah shouted at the top of her lungs, her voice echoing off the walls. "You’re the ones who planned this entire marriage shit from the start! You trapped him!"
Taken aback by her explosive reaction, Dorrent didn’t waste any more time arguing. He leaned down, his fingers easily scooping the piece of paper off the floor. He brought it to his face, his eyes quickly tracking the messy, ink-smudged lines written in Duro’s hand.
To my little bird,
I begin by apologizing with what I’m about to ask from you in this letter. Maybe the time you will read this letter I’ll have breathed my last, but please my sweetheart, I love you so much, and my last wish is for you to get married to Dorrent Grefo.
You need someone as strong as him by your side and I can assure you he will protect you. Your life is in danger, please don’t waste more time being single. If you truly love me, please get married to him, and once again I’m so sorry for pushing you into this.
I love you. Bye, see you again in paradise.
Duro
The moment Dorrent finished reading the final syllable of the signature, the heavy weight of Jannah’s grief completely vanished from his mind. The anxiety that had been plaguing his chest since they entered the slums evaporated.
A smile cut across his handsome features, his silver eyes flaring with a sudden, brilliant flash of triumph. The old man had literally handed him the golden key to her submission.
SMACK!
Before Dorrent could even savor the victory, Jannah’s heavy boot swung upward, kicking him across his jaw with a sharp, resounding crack. The force of the strike tilted his head to the side, leaving a faint red mark on his perfect skin.
"You evil, disgusting man!" Jannah shrieked, her voice cracking with agony as she stared at his smiling face. "Are you happy now?! Is this funny to you?! Are you happy with what has just happened to my family?! Are you happy that I have literally been sold to you by my dead grandfather?!"
She stumbled to her feet, her left hand clutching her bandaged ribs as tears poured down her cheeks. "I am standing here mourning the only father I have ever known, and you are standing over his corpse smiling like a psycho! You are so incredibly ruthless and heartless!"
Dorrent’s expression darkened slightly, but the triumphant smirk never left his eyes. He lunged forward with lightning speed, his hand clamping around her waist and pulling her flushing body tightly against his chest, locking her arms to her sides.
"I’m sorry, little physician," Dorrent murmured as he leaned down, his hot breath brushing against her wet cheek. "I truly am sorry for your loss... but I just couldn’t help myself from reading the good news. Your grandfather was a very wise man."
"You’re a psychopath!" Jannah shrieked, twisting her torso as she raised her left hand, slamming her fist against his shoulder. "If you think that by forcing this marriage you have won anything, you are completely wrong! Now that I have nothing left to live for, no one left to protect... I will make your life a living hell! Do you hear me, Dorrent?! I will live for the sole purpose of destroying your peace! You will regret the very day you made me your wife!"
She leaned in closer, her eyes burning with a terrifying resolve. "I am willing to die with you. I will drag us both into hell before I let you have a single day of happiness. You better change your mind about marrying me right now if you want to live a long life!"
Dorrent looked down at her wild, beautiful face, his eyes flashing with a terrifying obsession that knew no boundaries.
"I won’t change my mind, Jannah," Dorrent replied, his voice dropping into a low whisper that sent a cold shiver straight down her spine. "And as for dying together... that won’t be a problem at all. If hell is where you want to drag me, I’ll gladly burn right next to you."
Before she could hurl another curse, Dorrent leaned down, stopping her ranting by slamming his lips over hers.
Jannah gasped, her eyes widening in fury as she tried to twist her head away to refuse the kiss. But Dorrent’s hand shot upward, his long fingers clamping around the back of her neck with an iron grip, locking her head in place. He used his thumb to slightly pinch her chin, forcing her jaw to drop open, and instantly invaded her mouth with his tongue.
The kiss was punishing, deep, and consuming. Dorrent explored every single corner of her mouth with a starved, predatory hunger, his tongue sweeping against hers as if he wanted to literally drink her.
He held the kiss for a long, suffocating minute, ignoring the way her left hand dug into his chest. He kissed her in until her lungs were devoid of air and her knees went soft against his frame.
When he finally disconnected the intense, bruising kiss, Jannah slumped against his chest, breathless, her swollen lips trembling as she gasped for oxygen.
Dorrent raised his thumb, slowly and deliberately wiping away the saliva and blood from her mouth. A smile touched his lips. "I missed the taste of your mouth very much, little enemy," he murmured.
Gathering the last ounce of her fading strength, Jannah’s jaw snapped forward. She bit down forcefully on his thumb, her sharp teeth sinking deep into his flesh until the taste of his blood flooded her tongue.
"Ugh—!"
Dorrent winced, a sharp hiss escaping his teeth as he jerked his hand off her face, staring at the puncture marks on his skin. An amused chuckle rolled past his chest as he looked down at her stubborn glare.
"You truly are a fierce little rabid dog, aren’t you?" Dorrent whispered, his voice dripping with affection.
Without waiting for her response, he wrapped his arms around her fragile frame again, pulling her into a tight hug that completely enveloped her body against the cold night air. He buried his face into her hair, his voice vibrating against her ear.
"I’m sorry about everything, Jannah..." Dorrent whispered. "But I am here for you now. And you will never be alone."
