Chapter 1: Rebate System
"I want a divorce," said Rebecca, Sean’s childhood lover and now wife. They were married last year in January.
The news came as a shock to Sean. He stood frozen in the doorway of their bedroom, staring at the divorce papers she held out like a weapon. He hadn’t done anything wrong that would warrant this sudden divorce letter being shoved right in front of him by the person he loved dearly with his heart.
"What do you mean by you wanting us to divorce? I have always done right by you. I always made sure you got everything you need. I have always been by your side for as long as I have remembered—" said Sean, but was cut short by Rebecca.
"Hey, stop all these your explaining. It won’t change my mind. That’s the problem with you. You are always too good. That’s the problem. I don’t want a all goody two shoes. You are too boring, immature. Damn, I wasted my childhood being with you. Now sign this divorce letter," said Rebecca.
Sean felt something inside him crack. The words hit harder than any physical blow could. He couldn’t believe this was the same woman he had loved with all his heart. The same Rebecca who used to smile when he brought her flowers. The same Rebecca who cried happy tears on their wedding day.
"Sign the letter this very moment," said Rebecca, shoving the letter right in front of Sean while she put a pen in his hands and directed his hands to where he should sign.
"Rebecca, I beg you. Please don’t leave," said Sean. His voice broke on the last word.
"Sign this fucking paper, Sean. Stop wasting my time," said Rebecca, annoyance showing on her face. Her eyes were cold. Empty. Like she was looking at a stranger instead of her husband.
Sean saw that look and knew he was wasting his time begging Rebecca. This was the face of someone that had made up her mind for the divorce. His hands shook as he picked up the pen.
Sean signed the divorce letter with tears flowing from his eyes. Then the next thing that Rebecca did hit him like he wanted to end it all.
"Thank you, and take this. You are invited to me and Anthony’s wedding which is happening next month," said Rebecca with a smile shown on her face. She pulled out a white envelope from her purse.
"Whatttt!!!!!!!!!!" shouted Sean.
The reason Sean shouted in shock was because Anthony was Sean’s best friend. He had met him since their high school days. They played basketball together. Shared secrets. Trusted each other with everything. He couldn’t believe it. That his trusted friend was having an affair with his wife behind his back. But all his denial ended when he picked the wedding invitation letter from Rebecca’s hands and looked at it and saw his best friend’s name in it. The gold lettering seemed to mock him. It was like Sean’s world was falling apart. But that wasn’t the worst thing, because the worst thing was yet to come.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you that you need to pack your things out of this house. It isn’t yours anymore, due to you cheating," said Rebecca. She checked her nails like she was discussing the weather.
"What? Cheating?" shouted Sean in confusion on what’s going on. His mind raced. Cheating? He had never even looked at another woman.
"With a little AI and editing, I have pics and videos of you going to a motel with different womans. Funny how advanced AI has gotten. And everyone in the company acted as a witness, so you lose everything due to the agreement we made in court during our wedding," said Rebecca, smiling. "Also, you can’t go back to work. Everyone heard about your cheating scandal, so you have been fired and you lost your shares to the company due to the cheating scandal clause you signed in court too, making me take your 30 percent with my 20 percent share with Anthony’s 30 percent share. We own the company now. I just thought I needed to give you the heads up." She laughed, the sound sharp and cruel.
Hearing everything happening at once crushed Sean. The betrayal of the people he trusted broke something inside him. The company was something that both him and Anthony had struggled to make into the multimillionaire dollar company that it was now. He had lost everything he had worked his whole life for. Sean started dragging his legs out of the apartment without saying a word. His body moved on autopilot. The only sound he could hear was Rebecca laughing at him while calling him different names. The door slammed behind him, and the echo followed him down the hallway.
Sean had a destination in mind. He was about to commit suicide by jumping into the train rails. He had lost everything in an instant. He couldn’t bear to live with this amount of pain. He just wanted to end it all.
The truth was, he was deeply in love with Rebecca that he was blinded by everything he signed to prove his love for Rebecca. But the truth was that he was a simp, a fool blinded by love.
Summing up everything that happened over these three years, there was one lesson learned.
A simp ends up with nothing. He had already come to terms with the fact that he’s a simp. At this point, he swore inwardly that in his next life ,he won’t help anyone unless there’s a worthy benefit in store for him ,that is if there is a next life .
Then on the way to the subway station to jump in front of the train, Sean met an old woman wearing worn-off clothes that were torn and had holes in it. She sat against a brick wall, barely visible in the evening shadows.
"Please, young man. Can you help me with a little cash? My grandchildren need food. They are hungry. Please help me," said the old woman. Her voice was weak but kind.
Sean looked at the old woman. He put his hands on his pocket and brought out his wallet and gave the old woman a thousand dollars. The reason why Sean did that was because he didn’t need the money anymore. He was going to end it all. He turned away from the old woman and started heading towards the train subway. The station lights glowed in the distance.
"Thank you, sir. I wish you everything good in this life, and you don’t need to kill yourself because you were betrayed by people you trust. You can work yourself to the top again," said the old woman. Her words cut through the fog in his mind.
Sean heard that and wondered in his mind how she knows. He quickly turned back to where the old woman was to ask her, but when he turned she wasn’t there. The brick wall was empty. Like she had never existed. Then he received a prompt message followed by a sound.
[Ding!]
A blue screen appeared in front of his eyes. Floating in the air like something out of a video game.
