Chapter 495: Chapter 492: Indulging in Excess
When she came out, she found that the vase on the dining table was already empty.
"I remember there were a few flowers in here before, where did they go?"
"The flowers had dried up, but I’ve already bought new ones, though they won’t be delivered until tomorrow," He Qianhui said.
Zhang Hao didn’t give it much thought.
After tasting the red braised pork ribs made by He Qianhui, Zhang Hao gave a thumbs-up and exclaimed:
"If I could eat your red braised pork ribs every day, I’d die happy right now even if it caused me to heat up."
As soon as He Qianhui heard him say that, she quickly hit his head with her chopsticks.
"What are you saying at this hour? If you were to die now, what would I do?"
"Making me a young widow, no, just a widow."
Zhang Hao chuckled: "How could I let that happen? I haven’t taken care of you enough yet. I was just speaking offhand."
He Qianhui glared at him, at a loss for words.
After they finished eating, it was still early so they went downstairs for a walk.
By chance, they ran into Xu Rui and her husband again, as there hadn’t been much interaction between the two families recently.
Only after asking did they learn that Xu Rui’s husband had been busy with work and came home very late every day.
And Xu Rui had been staying home to look after her health and hadn’t been going out readily.
Today, her husband got off work early, so they decided to eat out instead of cooking.
On their way back, they happened to run into He Qianhui and Zhang Hao.
"Mr. Zhang, long time no see. How have you two been lately?" Xu Rui greeted them first.
"How else can we be? Same old, same old. And you? Have you been taking care of yourself as you promised me? If you haven’t, I would be upset."
Seeing Zhang Hao say this, Xu Rui nodded repeatedly: "Of course, I’ve been taking care of myself just as you said, but I’m almost out of medicine."
"I might need to pick up more in a few days. I hope Doctor Zhang will definitely be at the hospital in the coming days, so I don’t make a wasted trip."
Hearing this, He Qianhui chuckled: "Even if he’s not at the hospital, he’ll definitely be at home."
"You can come to our house then, or worst case, give me a call and I’ll let him know."
"For you to see him about a medical issue is as easy as can be, right?"
For Xu Rui, finding Zhang Hao for medical attention was indeed not that hard.
If others traveled great distances to seek his help, for her, it was just a matter of walking from one door to the other.
"I won’t keep you any longer. I still want to take her over there for a stroll," Zhang Hao said.
Xu Rui nodded in agreement: "Then we’ll head back now."
In this residential area, He Qianhui knew everyone.
Now that she was seen coming and going with Zhang Hao, it naturally drew quite a bit of attention.
But after explaining, it seemed like everyone could understand.
She even overheard some gossip about her ex-husband Liu Gang.
For instance, why hadn’t they had any children after so many years of marriage?
His nice-guy act was possibly just a facade—she had seen him complain at the dinner table about his wife who couldn’t even ’lay an egg’.
These words now sounded to He Qianhui only ironic and boring.
Yet, if she hadn’t split up with Liu Gang, she would be the one suffering.
But she had also been with Zhang Hao for a long time now, and still, there was no movement in her belly.
Fortunately, her period was almost over, and once it was done, she’d need to go to the City Hospital for a proper check-up.
He Qianhui was certain there were no issues with her health.
But she hadn’t told Zhang Hao about it, deciding to quietly go to another hospital and get the checks done.
If the problem really lay with her, then she would have to find an excuse to leave Zhang Hao.
She couldn’t let an entire family suffer because of her.
After buying a bunch of snacks, Zhang Hao stuffed them all into the snack cupboard.
Added together, the two of them weren’t even sixty years old; in truth, they were still young and enjoying some snacks now and then was no sin.
The very next morning as soon as Zhang Hao went to work, He Qianhui headed to the bathroom.
Seeing the clean pad without a trace of blood, she confirmed her period had ended.
She requested half a day off from the manager and hurried to City Hospital to see a gynecologist.
After a series of tests, looking at the final results, He Qianhui’s hanging heart finally settled back down.
There were no issues with her body; she was capable of conceiving naturally.
As for why, over such a long period of time, nothing had happened accidentally with Zhang Hao.
It could only be attributed to good fortune preventing any unexpected pregnancy.
Still, the doctor told He Qianhui that if she wanted children, it was best to act quickly.
With age, the pains of pregnancy would increase, and one certainly shouldn’t wait until past thirty.
Seeking children at that age would only raise risks for both her and the developing baby, facts that He Qianhui was well aware of.
Understanding the benefits and detriments involved, she was grateful for the conversation when the doctor brought it up.
As she left the hospital with her test report in hand, she unexpectedly bumped into someone.
He Qianhui felt a sense of familiarity at first glance.
It was only after she brushed past the person that she remembered who he was.
Wasn’t this Lin Zhen, Zhang Hao’s archenemy?
However, this Lin Zhen seemed much older than before, lacking the vitality of a man in his early twenties.
Curious, He Qianhui followed Lin Zhen, wanting to see what he was doing at the hospital.
It turned out that Lin Zhen went straight to the men’s health department, where all the patients gathered were male.
Her presence as a woman was quite conspicuous, but He Qianhui had prepared an excuse for herself.
That was to pick up a test result for her man.
Helping her husband get a test result wasn’t overstepping as a wife.
She stood outside the department, ears pricked, listening in, when she heard a male doctor say inside, "You’ve been overindulgent, haven’t I already told you to be more temperate?"
"If the medication doesn’t work this time, surgery will be necessary."
Lin Zhen yelled, "What about surgery? You quacks! Is this how you treat me because I work at our family hospital?"
"Calling yourselves experts, I think you bought those titles with money; I’ll trust you one last time."
"And if this medication doesn’t work, you can all get lost."
Realizing Lin Zhen might be coming out, He Qianhui quickly found a place to hide.
She didn’t want any direct contact with Lin Zhen; what if he recognized her?
Even if he didn’t recognize her, she didn’t want any contact with this man.
She thought she could just get past this, but suddenly a hand landed on He Qianhui’s shoulder.
Startled, He Qianhui let out a cry and quickly ran away, and only after she was far enough did she stop to soothe her frantic heartbeat.
When footsteps came from behind, He Qianhui tensed up again and didn’t dare to look back.
