Chapter 399: Chapter 396: Control Yourself
The Director of Surgery didn’t know what to say at this point.
Indeed, there was no use for Zhang Hao in this ward.
As for why he was called here, it was merely to see if he could be of any help should the opportunity arise.
"Alright, alright, you may leave, but if a similar situation occurs next time, I won’t be able to let you go," the Director said.
Wang Hai didn’t say a word, just waved his hand.
As he left the ward, he brushed past that woman.
All he heard was the woman’s voice choked with emotion.
"No matter how much it costs, it doesn’t matter, I just want my husband to be alive, to wake up. If your hospital can’t save him, then I’ll transfer him elsewhere, even if it means going abroad."
Zhang Hao turned a deaf ear to this.
Twenty minutes past his clock-out time, he finally left work and drove to the bottom of He Qianhui’s company’s building.
There he saw her, having been waiting there for a while.
Seeing the car arrive, she quickly walked over, pulled open the door, and got in.
"Traffic jam, that’s why I’m late today," he explained.
"Just before leaving work, the Director of Surgery called me in, said I was to use my ’handsome charm’ to have a word with a patient’s family member," he recounted.
He Qianhui eyed Zhang Hao, "Handsome charm, you? Don’t joke, you only seem handsome to me. To others, you might be nothing at all."
Each time He Qianhui belittled him like this, Zhang Hao felt his confidence dwindling.
"Is that so? If that’s the case, I fear I would no longer be able to walk with swagger in the hospital," he responded sarcastically.
"Also, this morning your friend came to the hospital with her boyfriend seeking me out," he said.
"Without much discussion, she insisted I prescribe something to help her boyfriend’s ’manly vigor’."
"Your friend also mentioned that when you get married someday, she wants to be your bridesmaid."
"How long have you two known each other? Does she know about your past?" he inquired.
He Qianhui shook her head, "She doesn’t know, I haven’t told her. We haven’t been in touch for a long time."
"She only reached out to me recently. We must have known each other for seven or eight years," she added.
"However, there were probably three or four years when we lost contact. I don’t know how she’s been doing," He Qianhui mused.
Zhang Hao felt there was something odd about the whole situation both inside and out.
"Looks like your friend must have found out something to reach out to you like that. You should be careful," he warned.
"I’m not being paranoid, it’s just that it’s hard to deal with women and villains," Zhang Hao remarked cynically.
He Qianhui thought Zhang Hao was being overly serious.
"Actually, my relationship with her is quite good, it’s just that there hasn’t been much interaction over the years, so it faded. Can’t you think a bit better of people?" she asked.
Zhang Hao argued, "I’m not being negative about people, it’s just, ’you never know what’s in a man’s heart’. Anyway, from our brief encounter this morning,"
"I just felt she wasn’t quite right. As for what you think, I don’t mind; after all, she is your friend," he continued.
On the surface, He Qianhui appeared to take Zhang Hao’s words lightly, but in reality, she had taken note of them.
If it weren’t for the call from that friend yesterday, He Qianhui wouldn’t have even thought of her.
Somehow they had suddenly added each other on WeChat, a few back-and-forth chats and they figured out who the other was.
At first, He Qianhui had wanted to ask why she added her out of the blue.
But she simply said she wanted to reconnect with an old friend, her excuse sounding quite perfunctory.
He Qianhui, however, didn’t delve too deeply into it.
Not until that phone call last night, coupled with Zhang Hao’s recent expression of his suspicions.
It made a closed loop of suspicion form in He Qianhui’s heart!
"Do you think it’s possible that she did this because I found a boyfriend like you, and before that, I was so high-profile?"
"You’re not only a famous doctor’s apprentice but also young and promising—at least in her eyes, you’re a quality man."
"So, I’m a bit suspicious of her motive for going to the hospital this morning; it’s very likely that man..."
"...isn’t actually her boyfriend at all, might just be an actor she’s paid to find from somewhere."
Once Zhang Hao heard this, he reconsidered the events of the morning.
"I think your suspicion is very valid; otherwise, I can’t see her dissing that man in front of so many people."
"After all, no matter what, he’s her boyfriend, right? You’d think she’d save him some face in critical moments, wouldn’t you?"
With a slight smile, He Qianhui took out her phone, found that friend, opened the friend circle, and suddenly didn’t see any updates—only the "visible for three days" notice.
"Looks like our analysis is probably very close to the mark, but this matter isn’t important."
"What’s mine can’t be taken by others, and what isn’t, I can’t keep by force. However, I haven’t had contact with her for a long time."
"Whether she has changed too much, I’m not sure, so you need to stay firm and manage yourself well."
"Don’t fall for her beauty trap, lest I end up sobbing and affect your work, then you’d have to comfort me."
After hearing this, Zhang Hao didn’t say anything; he just started the car.
Once the car was in motion, he slowly responded to He Qianhui’s recent words.
"Your friend is too ugly for my taste. Even if she climbed onto my bed..."
"I’d kick her off. You know I’m pretty firm about my preferences in this regard."
He Qianhui covered her mouth and laughed, "What nonsense you talk."
The two returned home and went about their usual routine of laundry and cooking.
Considering she would be on a business trip in the next few days, He Qianhui found all the clothes she hadn’t had time to wash before.
She stuffed them all into the washing machine, including a few special pieces of lingerie.
Zhang Hao saw this and hurriedly picked them out: "You’ve worn these already; let’s not keep them, right?"
"Let’s not keep them? Have you forgotten how much I spent on these? Plus, I really like them; they can still be worn after washing."
Seeing He Qianhui’s insistence, Zhang Hao had no choice but to put the clothes back.
He didn’t forget to mutter, "I’ll just buy you new ones later. Where are you going on your business trip this time anyway? Should I drive you?"
"It’s ridiculous that they’re sending you, a woman, on a business trip. What if something bad happens?"
"Why can’t they have a male colleague accompany you? Now I’m really curious if the male employees at your company can meet the monthly performance standards set by the company."
"Hasn’t your company recently started implementing a firing policy for the least-performing employees? Has anyone been let go in recent times?"
He Qianhui quickly interrupted Zhang Hao’s words, "You really shouldn’t wish for a male colleague to accompany me on the trip."
"It would not only increase expenses, but if I met someone who’s not articulate, maybe after a drink the deal could be easily signed."
"If he says the wrong thing, I’ll have to beg and plead to finalize the deal."
"It’s better if I go alone. Rest assured, I’ll definitely keep myself in check outside."
"I won’t let those men take liberties with me, but I’ll certainly make them long to see me again."
As she said this, He Qianhui tiptoed and gently pressed her lips against Zhang Hao’s in a brief kiss.
