Chapter 78: How To Make a Woman Happy

The following day, Wendy did as she had said she would and sent a letter of resignation to the HR department. Naturally, the HR department did not dare to approve this without Michael’s permission. However, that did not matter. In any case, Wendy was not going back to MC Enterprise again.

Michael, on the other hand, felt even more confused. He knew that he could not continue staying at home with her. It was not that he had to go back to the company as he could simply work from home. The biggest problem was that staying here with Wendy was completely meaningless, as he had made no progress in fixing their relationship even after the past three days. On top of that, she hated him right now.

She would only feel more repulsed by him if she were to see him every single waking moment.

Hence, Michael left the apartment on the fourth day.

Before leaving, he said, "I know that you don’t want to see me, so I’ll go back to work today. I come back home every night. You can go wherever you want within Lake City, but if you plan on leaving again, I’m sorry to tell you that you probably won’t ever get the chance to."

Wendy understood clearly that there was no way she could be able to leave Lake City in the near future. Ever since Michael stopped her from departing on the train, she knew that as long as he did not wish to get divorced or let her leave, it would be impossible for her to do so. This was also the reason why she had agreed to the deal with Christian in the first place. Unfortunately, Christian had made it clear that he would not help her again. And even if he was still willing to help her now, Wendy would not accept his offer.

Christian was a very dangerous person, and she wanted nothing to do with him.

After Michael left, Wendy felt much more at ease. She would leave the apartment and go out for a walk when she felt bored. Otherwise, she spent all her time working on her designs and editing videos for TikTok.

Michael, on the other hand, only grew increasingly frustrated after he returned to the office. He felt consumed by the desire to fix his relationship with Wendy.

"Mr. Lucas?" said Mr. York. He had been finished talking for quite some time, but since Michael had not responded at all, he could not help but call out to him, "Mr. Lucas, are you listening to me?"

Michael came to his senses. He looked up at Mr. York and rubbed the area between his eyebrows, evidently fatigued. He said, "Go on."

He had not managed to get a good night’s sleep the past few nights. Constantly afraid that Wendy would try to run away in the middle of the night, his sleep quality was often poor.

"Do you need me to repeat myself?" Mr. York asked.

"Yeah."

Mr. York started again, telling Michael about everything important that had happened within the company over the last few days. Michael nodded after Mr. York was done. Then, he said, "Do you have a girlfriend?"

Mr. York was dumbfounded by that question. He thought, why is he asking me about something so personal?

Shaking his head rigidly, he said, "No, not yet."

Since work was hectic and he often had to work overtime, it had been difficult for him to meet anyone.

"Okay, but do you know how to make a woman happy?"

The moment Mr. York heard those words, he understood why Michael had asked him that question in the first place. However, this was too difficult for him. How could he possibly know how to make girls happy when he did not even have a girlfriend?

Observing Michael’s expression, Mr. York asked tentatively, "Mr. Lucas, are you referring to Mrs. Lucas?"

Michael gazed coldly at him. He said, "Why are you asking so many questions?"

Since Michael refused to admit it, Mr. York could only chuckle. "You can treat Mrs. Lucas the way that you treated Yvonne in the past."

"Yvonne and Wendy are completely different people," said Michael with a shake of his head, "For Yvonne, I just had to give her money and buy her luxurious goods to make her happy. But Wendy does not care about any of this, which is why I’m having such a hard time now."

Michael had bought a lot of designer clothes for Wendy, but she rarely wore them. Hence, he was clear that she did not care for anything materialistic.

"Go and do some research and help me come up with some ideas," Michael demanded.

Mr. York felt speechless. He did not understand why this fell within his job scope. However, since those instructions had come from Michael himself, he did not dare to object. He could only agree with his head bowed.

"If you do this well, I won’t dock your pay anymore."

When Mr. York heard that, he immediately cheered up. He said, "I promise to give it my best."

After receiving that special assignment from Michael, Mr. York started working on it immediately. He spent a long time researching on the internet before calling a few of his married friends to seek their advice. Finally, just before work ended, he headed to Michael’s office with some documents. Smiling, he said, "Mr. Lucas, I spent the entire day gathering these resources. I’m sure they will be effective."

When Michael saw the title on the document written in bold, he inadvertently frowned. It was labeled, ’99 ways to win a woman’s heart.’ He gazed at Mr. York suspiciously. However, he looked so confident that Michael lowered his head and flipped open the document.

The first page was a table of contents. It also stated there that even though there were 99 ways to win a woman’s heart, people with high emotional intelligence only needed three. On the other hand, individuals with average emotional intelligence needed around 10, and those with low emotional intelligence might have to use up to 30 moves. With a look of disgust in his eyes, Michael continued flipping through the pages.

"What do you think, Mr. Lucas?" asked Mr. York tentatively.

Michael flung the document aside. With a sullen face, he said, "What kind of nonsense is this?"

Observing Michael’s reaction, Mr. York suddenly had a bad feeling. He immediately stepped forward, picked up the document, and said, "I do more research right away..."

"Leave it!" Michael glanced at Mr. York. He coughed softly and then continued in a cold voice, "You can go, official work is more important"

Mr. York felt that Michael’s reaction was somewhat inconsistent. Suddenly, he realized what was really going on. He immediately left the document on the desk and walked out of the office with a smile on his face.

Following Mr. York’s departure, Michael grabbed the document along with his car key and left the office. Since it was already time to get off work, he did not intend to stay any longer.

Wendy was still at home, after all. As Michael sat in the car, he flipped through the entire document. He thought about what he had seen on the first page, that individuals with high emotional intelligence only needed to make three moves.

With that in mind, he believed that he could conquer Wendy with just one move.

Mr. Michael Lucas, president of MC Enterprise, certainly had great confidence in his own emotional intelligence. However, in order to be prepared, he decided to memorize a few more tactics just in case they came in handy. After reading through the entire document, he devised a plan. According to the document, all women appreciated flowers and romance. In that case, he would give those to Wendy.

Hence, he gave Mr. York a call and asked him to make a reservation at a restaurant with three Michelin stars. He also instructed him to purchase a big bouquet of flowers and schedule for it to be delivered to the restaurant. He believed that this would create the most romantic surprise for Wendy, and that she would be so moved that her anger would dissipate entirely. If that did not work, he would just take her to watch a movie.

The information in the document said that women generally enjoyed shopping and watching movies. Michael had brought her shopping before, but she did not enjoy buying things that she did not need. However, they had never watched a movie together before.

Michael imagined that it would be late by the time the movie ended. When that happened, he would drive Wendy back home. After they got home, they might engage in something passionate...

The more he thought about it, the more he believed that this would work.

Mr. York quickly made a reservation at the restaurant.

Michael drove home to escort Wendy personally. After parking the car beside the apartment building, he took out his phone and dialed her number. However, she did not answer.

When he tried again, her phone was turned off. His eyes darkened when he heard the automated Voice over the phone informing him that the person he was calling was currently unavailable.

Since she had turned off her phone, he decided to go upstairs to get her. After unlocking the front door, he said, "Wendy."

Naturally, Wendy did not answer him. Michael looked around the house before he found Wendy in the study, sketching something in a very serious manner.

Michael approached her. Softly, he said, "Wendy?"

Wendy did not even look back at him. Michael paced back and forth a few times. If this were like before, he might have waited until she was done sketching to talk to her as he was afraid of disturbing her and making her angry.

However, they had plans tonight. If he kept on waiting, there was no telling when Wendy would be done with her work. So, Michael said, "Wendy, I want to take you somewhere."

Absolute silence.

Michael had grown used to Wendy behaving like this. He no longer felt embarrassed. He continued, "I promise that you will like what have planned."

More silence.

"Wendy, I know that you are working on your designs, but you shouldn’t forget to eat," said Michael. "It’s already past 6 P.M. now. It’s time for dinner. Why don’t you continue working after eating?"

Wendy did feel hungry. Since Michael was being so disruptive anyway, she was also unable to continue focusing on sketching. Hence, she put her pencil aside and walked to the kitchen.

Pulling open the refrigerator door, she took out the pork ribs and vegetables that she had bought from the supermarket this morning and planned on making a few simple dishes.

Michael watched as Wendy ignored him and started preparing the ingredients. He immediately rushed forward, snatched the pork ribs and vegetables away from her and placed them back in the refrigerator. Grabbing her hand, he said, "Let’s go out to eat tonight."

He managed to pull Wendy forward a few steps She tried flinging his hand away but was unable to. Standing her ground, she said coldly, "Let go of me."

Michael turned around only to be met with Wendy’s sullen face. It seemed likely that she would start a fight with him if he did not let go of her right now. Then again, judging from the current state of their relationship, it did not seem like things could get any worse anyway.

Wendy watched as Michael slowly and reluctantly released her hand. Without giving him another look, she turned her back to him and continued bustling around the kitchen.

Soon, she was done cooking. Just like before, she ate by herself.

Michael’s stomach growled when he caught a whiff of her delicious food. However, he did not dare to sit down beside Wendy. At that very moment, his phone rang. It was Mr. York calling.

The moment the call went through, Mr. York said excitedly, "Mr. Lucas, I’ve arranged everything that you asked me to. What time do you and Mrs. Lucas intend to come over?"

Feeling frustrated, Michael replied, "We’re not coming." With that, he hung up.

On the other side of the phone, Mr. York was completely dumbfounded. He did not understand what was going on.

After hanging up the phone, Michael saw that Wendy had almost finished her meal. Then, he continued watching her back as she washed the dishes in the kitchen. Once she was done with that, she tied up the trash bag and brought it downstairs to dispose of.

This time, Michael did not follow her. He sat down on the couch and scratched his head.

Since Wendy was determined to ignore him, it was impossible to get her to go out with him.

He thought, I can’t possibly get my bodyguards to drag her out, right? If I have to resort to that, then there is no way we can ever fix our relationship.

He touched his stomach, feeling famished. He then went to the kitchen to check what was available in the refrigerator. Even though there were many ingredients, he did not know how to cook them. Once again, he ended up grabbing a packet of instant noodles. It was the only dish he knew how to make.

Wendy went for a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood after throwing out the trash bag. By the time she returned to the apartment, Michael had already finished his noodles and was washing the bowl. As long as Michael did not disturb her, she could pretend that he was invisible. Instead of continuing to work on her sketches, she took a bath and went to lie in bed, where she surfed the internet on her phone for a while.
