Chapter 671: I Will Not Lose You Again
Wendy watched as Michael’s tears slowly rolled down his face.
Her mood grew heavier and more anxious, "What on earth happened, tell me immediately."
"I’m sorry Wendy, I’m sorry..." Michael reached out and hugged Wendy, holding her tightly, his voice choked with sobs, "I didn’t take care of Leah and Jake, I’m sorry..."
Wendy reached out and gently patted Michael on the back, trying to comfort him.
Michael continued, "Yvonne had gone through plastic surgery in order to look like you, she imitated your voice and your behavior. When you were first taken hostage by Christian, Yvonne stayed, and I thought she was you.
"Then, she drugged our meals with a poison that attacks the immune system, and there was only one antidote. Christian wanted me to choose between Leah and Jake..."
"And then what?" Michael suddenly paused, and Wendy immediately continued to ask, "Whom did you choose?"
"I chose Leah, but..." Michael took a deep breath and said, "Leah has an innate immune system problem, and this poison was very damaging to her body, so to save her life, I had to give her the antidote first. Although Leah took the antidote, her immune system problems relapsed and she still faces a life-threatening situation, the doctors say she needs a bone marrow replacement.
"But Leah still has not been able to find a suitable match. Since Leah took the antidote, Jake and Zess are now also faced with life-threatening situations. Now, I can only pray that Milo Lawrence’s research team will be able to develop the antidote as soon as possible."
"Immune system issues? Bone marrow replacement?" Wendy frowned when she heard these terms.
Her memory had not yet fully recovered, and she subconsciously asked, "Is my bone marrow suitable? I am her biological mother, the chances of a successful match should be quite high, right? Aren’t Jake and Leah twins? That success rate should be relatively higher."
Michael also frowned when he heard Wendy and said, "Neither you nor Jake’s bone marrow can be used."
"Not suitable?" Wendy asked rhetorically.
"Don’t you remember?" Michael said, "Jake told me that you nearly drowned in the ocean when you were pregnant and were badly hurt."
Wendy closed her eyes trying to recall it and the image of her falling into the ocean came to mind. The image in her memory became clearer and a terrible headache hit her as she tried to remember.
Michael looked at Wendy in agony and immediately asked with concern, "What’s wrong with you Wendy?"
"I..." Wendy hadn’t intended to hide the memory loss from Michael and said truthfully, "Zen and I both forgot a lot of things, and when I woke up a few days ago, all I remembered was that Christian was my husband.
"He told me that Michael was a drug lord, and he held me hostage and gave me amnesia. He said that he risked his own life to save me from Michael’s hands. I lost any memories I had of you and the two children, it is all gone."
"Me, a drug lord? Christian, your husband?" Michael heard these words and wondered how he should face Wendy and these accusations.
However, it was indeed something that Christian was capable of doing.
Wendy feared that Michael would misunderstand her, she hastened to explain, "But don’t worry, nothing happened between Christian and me. Although he imbued me with false memories, I instinctively hated him and I noticed something was wrong in time, so nothing ever happened between us."
...
Looking at Wendy, Michael was heartbroken and reached out to hug her, he gently comforted her, "Wendy, it’s my fault for not protecting you."
Michael had actually doubted when he heard Wendy say that she had lost all her memories. After the ’Wendy-Yvonne’ incident that happened previously, he wasn’t sure if the Wendy in front of him was the one that he knew.
However, even if Michael might not have identified Wendy the first time, he definitely would not make the same mistake twice.
Looking at her familiar face, her eyes, her scent and even listening to her voice.
Yvonne could imitate Wendy’s appearance, but Wendy’s eyes and her scent were something Yvonne could never imitate.
Michael hugged Wendy tightly, hoping to reassure her. He promised solemnly, "From now on, I will never lose you again."
"Michael, would you have cared if something had happened with me and Christian during the time I was held hostage by him?" Wendy asked Michael seriously, "I want you to tell me the truth."
The memories that she currently carried were all instilled by Christian.
There was a possibility that Christian had done something to her, but she couldn’t remember it. She could only be sure that, as far as she could remember, nothing had ever happened.
"Of course I would care, I would care a lot," Michael said feeling distressed.
Wendy’s heart sunk when she heard Michael. She reached out and pushed him away looking disappointed.
Wendy sighed and said in a low voice, "I thought that you wouldn’t care."
Although Wendy asked such a question, she couldn’t help but feel a little sad when she heard Michael’s answer.
"No you fool, what I care about is me, myself," Michael said heartily.
"What do you mean you care about yourself?" Wendy asked, "Care if you’re being cuckolded?"
"Of course not." Michael immediately answered. "As your husband, it was my responsibility to protect you from any harm but I failed miserably. I was concerned about my incompetence in protecting you. That’s what I cared about! How could I possibly blame you for this? I can only blame myself for being such a failure."
What Michael meant was that he blamed himself greatly when he thought of his failure as a husband to protect his wife.
Michael’s words moved Wendy and her heart pounded in admiration. "Michael..."
Wendy whispered his name, her eyes filled with tears, "I’m sorry."
"Wendy, don’t ever apologize to me." Michael reached out to wipe away Wendy’s tears, feeling disheartened, "I’m the one who needs to say sorry."
"I told you I’ve lost all my memories. So I don’t know if Christian ... I can only be sure that in my existing memories he didn’t do anything bad to me." Wendy spoke with fear and worry.
"I am sure there was nothing," Michael reassured Wendy.
In all honesty, Michael wasn’t sure either, but he had to comfort Wendy. He was afraid that Wendy would think otherwise and feel bad about herself.
Michael continued, "I know Christian well, and he’s not a man who would be forceful.
Besides, if he did resort to force, there’s no need to make you lose your memory, isn’t it?" Wendy agreed to Michael’s point and nodded.
"Well, it’s all in the past, it will never happen again," Michael said as he once again took Wendy into his arms and breathed a sigh of relief.
...
After a flight that lasted about ten hours, Wendy and Michael got out of the helicopter and immediately rushed to the hospital.
By the time they arrived at the hospital, it was already 8 in the morning.
Wendy arrived at the ward filled with people, including Jake, Mrs. Lucas, Mary, Zess, and Isabel.
The very large VIP ward was crowded because with so many people present.
"Mommy, Daddy..." Leah saw Wendy and Michael, and a smile appeared on her little face. She still had the drips hanging on her hand, but she struggled to climb out of bed. Mrs. Lucas and Mary were beside the bed and immediately reached out to stop her.
Wendy stepped forward when she saw this. Looking at Leah’s familiar, tender face, Wendy couldn’t help but feel bad for her. Even if she could not recall Leah and Jake, blood was still thicker than water.
"Leah..." Wendy choked up and reached out to hug her.
"Mommy, you’re finally back." Leah said happily, "Brother and Great-grandmother said you and Daddy were away on a business trip, why did it take so long? I tried to call you several times, but Brother said not to disturb you."
Leah had been so well protected that she hadn’t known what was going on.
"I’m sorry Leah, Mommy will never travel for so long again." Wendy reached out and stroked Leah’s hair, kissing her cheek.
"Leah missed Daddy and Mommy so much." Leah pouted and said.
"Mommy missed you guys too." Wendy was afraid that if she held Leah too long, she wouldn’t be able to breathe well and let go of her.
Wendy took a look at Leah’s pale face and it felt like a stab in her heart. She kissed Leah’s forehead again, Wendy stood up and looked at the little boy standing beside her. She knew that this was her son Jake.
Wendy reached out and gave Jake a hug. Jake gave a low cry to his Mommy.
Although Great-grandmother had said that Mommy and Daddy were fine and would be back soon, it was only when he actually saw them appear that Jake’s mind was put at ease.
"Mommy, you and Daddy were on a business trip, so why are you both injured?"
Leah saw that Wendy had a bruise on her forehead and Michael had a bruise on his face.
Wendy was thinking about how to explain it to him when Michael immediately said, "Daddy and Mommy had a small car accident on the way back, so we suffered some injuries. But they are very minor, it’s okay."
Leah looked at Wendy’s injuries on her forehead, she gave her a blow on her wound, "Mummy is it painful? You will be ok after I blow on it."
Wendy once again felt tears in her eyes as she listened to her daughter. She asked Leah to give her a puff. Wendy in tears, laughed and said, "It really doesn’t hurt anymore, Leah is awesome."
"Yeah, it’s good that it doesn’t hurt Mommy anymore." Leah smiled happily after being praised by Wendy.
Wendy then stood up, looked at the familiar people in the room, and greeted them one by one, "Grandmother, Mom, Zess, Isabel..."
Isabel and Zess both nodded, Isabel called out to her sister-in-law, and Zess called out to Wendy.
Mrs. Lucas, on the other hand, heartily reached out and touched Wendy’s forehead, "Does it still hurt?"
Wendy shook her head, "No, it doesn’t hurt anymore."
Mary’s heart ached for what Wendy had gone through. But seeing that she had come back safely, she finally felt at ease.
